vcruntime140d.dll Missing: Trace the Debug Runtime on Windows Safely

Length21 min Posted Quest giverVGSources Team

If Windows says “The code execution cannot proceed because VCRUNTIME140D.dll was not found,” “VCRUNTIME140D.dll is missing,” or “Error loading VCRUNTIME140D.dll,” the file named in the message is vcruntime140d.dll. The 60-second answer is that vcruntime140d.dll is the Microsoft Visual C++ Debug runtime, not a normal Windows system file, so the correct fix is usually a proper Release build, a matching Visual Studio development installation, or repair of the application that requested it.

What vcruntime140d.dll is

vcruntime140d.dll is a real Microsoft Visual C++ runtime DLL used by native C and C++ programs compiled for Debug testing. The final d is significant:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • vcruntime140.dll is the normal Release runtime counterpart.
  • vcruntime140d.dll is the Debug runtime counterpart.
  • The file belongs to the MSVC and Visual Studio toolchain.
  • It is not a .NET file, DirectX file, graphics-driver file, or ordinary Windows installation component.

Microsoft documents the Debug naming convention and the role of vcruntime140d.dll in its Debug executable deployment guidance.

A program normally requests this file because the executable or one of its native DLL dependencies was compiled with a Debug runtime setting such as /MDd. Debug builds contain extra diagnostics and are intended for development or controlled testing. They are not intended to be distributed as ordinary end-user application dependencies.

That distinction changes the repair. Installing the ordinary Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable is appropriate for many errors involving vcruntime140.dll, but it is not the normal way to obtain vcruntime140d.dll. Microsoft states that Debug Visual C++ runtime DLLs are not redistributable as ordinary application dependencies.

Why the error appears

The most common causes are:

Cause What it means Correct direction
A Debug build was distributed The application or a native dependency was built with /MDd or /MTd Obtain a Release build or rebuild the program
Visual Studio C++ components were removed A developer or tester no longer has the matching Debug runtime Modify Visual Studio and install C++ support
The application was incompletely installed A package omitted files or an update damaged the installation Repair, reinstall, or update the application
Architecture mismatch An x86 program is being given x64 files, or the reverse Match the application architecture
Antivirus quarantine Security software removed a trusted development file Check Protection History and reinstall from a trusted source
Another dependency is broken The named DLL exists, but a dependency of it does not load Inspect the complete native dependency chain
Broader Windows corruption Several Windows components are failing Use DISM and SFC after application-specific checks

A public game or ordinary desktop application asking for a filename ending in d is unusual. It can indicate a bad package, a beta or developer build, a mod, a plugin, or a native component that was accidentally compiled as Debug.

First, identify which kind of problem you have

Before downloading or copying anything, answer these questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. What exact program shows the message?
  2. Is it your own Visual Studio project?
  3. Did the problem begin after reinstalling the program, updating it, removing Visual Studio, or an antivirus detection?
  4. Does the error name only vcruntime140d.dll, or also files such as msvcp140d.dll, vcruntime140_1d.dll, or ucrtbased.dll?
  5. Is the program x86, x64, or ARM64?
  6. Does the file exist in the application folder, but the program still refuses to start?
  7. Do unrelated programs show similar errors?

The answer usually separates a consumer repair from a developer repair:

  • If you are trying to run someone else’s program, start with that program’s repair, reinstall, update, or corrected Release version.
  • If you built the program, install the matching Visual Studio C++ components for private testing or rebuild the application and its native dependencies as Release.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the affected application

For an application or game user, this is the safest first fix. The program’s own installer should supply its complete, compatible set of files. If the program was accidentally packaged as Debug, only the developer or vendor can correct that deployment properly.

Repair a Windows application

On Windows 11:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Apps.
  4. Select Installed apps.
  5. Find the affected program.
  6. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  7. Select Advanced options.
  8. Select Repair.
  9. Start the program again.

Repair normally preserves application data. If the error remains and the page offers Reset, read the warning first because reset can remove application data or settings.

For a traditional desktop program:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Control Panel and open it.
  3. Select Programs.
  4. Select Programs and Features.
  5. Select the affected program.
  6. Choose Repair or Change, if available.
  7. Follow the installer prompts.
  8. Restart Windows and test the program.

If there is no repair option, uninstall the program, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the original vendor, Microsoft Store, or game launcher. Do not use a DLL archive as a substitute for the application installer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repair a game

Use the game launcher’s file verification or repair feature. This replaces incomplete or damaged files without asking you to identify individual DLLs.

For Epic Games:

  1. Open the Epic Games Launcher.
  2. Select Library.
  3. Find the game.
  4. Select the three dots beside the game.
  5. Select Manage.
  6. Select Verify.
  7. Wait for verification to finish.
  8. Launch the game again.

Steam also provides file verification for launch failures. Use Steam’s own official troubleshooting guidance for the current menu path.

If a verified game still requests vcruntime140d.dll, treat that as a packaging problem rather than a missing consumer redistributable. Contact the game developer or obtain a newer build. A normal public Release game should not generally require a Debug runtime.

How to tell whether this fix worked

The repair succeeded if:

  • The program starts without the vcruntime140d.dll message.
  • The installer or launcher reports that files were repaired.
  • The application no longer requests other Debug files.
  • A reinstall places a Release build in the application directory.

If the same error returns immediately after reinstalling, check whether the installer itself is distributing a Debug build. Contact the vendor with the exact error text and the names of any additional missing DLLs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 2: Install the C++ components for a private Debug build

If this is your own program, a test build, or an internal tool, install the matching Visual Studio development components instead of copying the DLL manually.

Microsoft’s C and C++ installation guidance identifies the required Visual Studio workload.

Add C++ support through Visual Studio Installer

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Visual Studio Installer.
  3. Open it.
  4. Find the installed Visual Studio edition.
  5. Select Modify.
  6. On the Workloads tab, select Desktop development with C++.
  7. Review the installation details on the right.
  8. If the project needs an older compiler, open the Individual components tab.
  9. Select the matching MSVC toolset and Windows SDK required by the project.
  10. Select Modify.
  11. Allow the installer to finish.
  12. Restart Visual Studio and run the Debug build again.

The exact toolset directory varies by Visual Studio version and update. Microsoft lists Debug-only runtime files in debug_nonredist locations associated with the installed toolset. These files are intended for development and controlled testing, not for copying into a customer’s application package.

If Visual Studio was recently repaired, uninstalled, or changed, this fix can restore the development environment that a Debug executable expects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to tell whether this fix worked

The fix worked if your Debug executable starts under the intended development or test environment. If it still fails, confirm that:

  • The installed Visual Studio version matches the project’s toolset.
  • The project targets the expected architecture.
  • The build is not pointing to an old or removed toolset.
  • Other Debug DLLs named in the error are also available.
  • The executable was rebuilt after the toolset was installed.

Installing Visual Studio is not the preferred repair for a third-party consumer application. The application vendor should provide a Release build.

Fix 3: Rebuild the program and native dependencies as Release

If you are the developer, rebuilding is the definitive fix when an application intended for distribution requests vcruntime140d.dll.

The Debug runtime is commonly selected by /MDd or /MTd. The normal Release choices are /MD or /MT, depending on the project’s deployment design. Microsoft explains these settings in its documentation for /MD, /MT, and /LD.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Change the Runtime Library setting

In Visual Studio:

  1. Open the solution.
  2. Set the configuration selector to Release.
  3. Set the platform selector to the intended target, such as x64, Win32, or ARM64.
  4. In Solution Explorer, right-click the project.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. At the top, set Configuration to Release.
  7. Set Platform to the target architecture.
  8. Expand Configuration Properties.
  9. Expand C/C++.
  10. Select Code Generation.
  11. Find Runtime Library.
  12. Select a non-Debug option appropriate for the project, commonly Multi-threaded DLL (/MD) or Multi-threaded (/MT).
  13. Select Apply.
  14. Repeat the setting for every native project that contributes to the program.
  15. Select Build.
  16. Select Clean Solution.
  17. Select Rebuild Solution.

Do not change only the top-level executable. A Release executable can still request vcruntime140d.dll if it loads a Debug-built plugin, wrapper, third-party native library, Qt component, Fortran component, or other native DLL.

All modules passed to the same link must use compatible runtime settings. A mixed Release and Debug dependency chain can continue to request files such as:

  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
  • vcruntime140d.dll
  • msvcp140d.dll
  • vcruntime140_1d.dll
  • ucrtbased.dll

Check the build output

After rebuilding:

  1. Open the output folder.
  2. Check the executable and native DLLs with the build configuration you intend to ship.
  3. Confirm that the distribution does not contain accidental Debug-only dependencies.
  4. Test the build on a clean test machine.
  5. Install the appropriate Release Visual C++ Redistributable for the target architecture if the program uses the shared Release runtime.

Microsoft’s dumpbin /DEPENDENTS documentation shows how to list imported DLL dependencies.

From a Visual Studio Developer Command Prompt, run:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
dumpbin /DEPENDENTS path\to\program.exe

Replace the path with the actual executable location. Run the command for native plugins and important native DLLs as well, because the top-level executable may not reveal every dependency loaded dynamically at runtime.

How to tell whether the rebuild worked

A correct Release rebuild should no longer request vcruntime140d.dll. The program should instead use its intended Release runtime arrangement. If dumpbin still shows a Debug DLL, locate the native project or third-party library that introduced it and rebuild or replace that component.

Fix 4: Match x86, x64, or ARM64 correctly

A matching filename is not enough. The runtime must also match the architecture of the application.

  • A 32-bit x86 application needs x86 native runtime files.
  • A 64-bit x64 application needs x64 native runtime files.
  • An ARM64 application needs ARM64-compatible files.
  • A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows, but it still needs 32-bit dependencies.

Microsoft explains that Win32 means x86 for native C++ project targeting, and that the architecture of the Visual Studio installation is separate from the architecture produced by the project. See Visual Studio target platforms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check a Visual Studio project

  1. Open the solution in Visual Studio.
  2. Select Build.
  3. Select Configuration Manager.
  4. Check the Active solution platform.
  5. Confirm that each native project uses the intended platform.
  6. Rebuild after correcting any mismatch.

Check a third-party program

Look in the application’s documentation or installer for its architecture. You can also:

  1. Open Task Manager.
  2. Start the program if it stays open long enough.
  3. Select the Details tab.
  4. Check whether the process is marked as 32-bit on your version of Windows.

If the program will not stay open, check its installation documentation or ask the vendor. Do not assume that a 64-bit Windows installation means every application is 64-bit.

Why System32 and SysWOW64 cause confusion

On 64-bit Windows, the directory names are counterintuitive:

  • System32 normally contains 64-bit system files.
  • SysWOW64 normally contains 32-bit system files.

Do not use those folders as a target for random DLL copying. The Windows loader and application search rules are architecture-aware, and manually placing a file in a system directory can create conflicts without repairing the application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to tell whether architecture was the problem

The fix worked if the application launches with a runtime of the same architecture. If the error changes to another missing DLL, that may indicate the original architecture issue was only the first visible failure. Repair the complete matching runtime set rather than copying files one at a time.

Fix 5: Install the official Release Visual C++ Redistributable only when it matches the actual need

The official current v14 package family includes:

Microsoft maintains the package information and compatibility details on its latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads page.

These packages provide Release runtime files such as vcruntime140.dll. They are useful when the program actually needs the Release runtime and it is missing, damaged, or the wrong architecture is installed.

They are not a general-purpose installer for vcruntime140d.dll. If the error specifically ends in d, installing the normal Redistributable may leave the original problem unchanged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install or repair the matching Release package

  1. Identify the application architecture.
  2. Download the matching package from Microsoft.
  3. Close the affected program.
  4. Run the downloaded installer.
  5. Accept the license terms if prompted.
  6. Choose Install or Repair, depending on what the installer offers.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Test the application again.

Many 64-bit Windows computers need both x86 and x64 Release packages because they run both 32-bit and 64-bit applications. Install both only when the applications require both architectures. Do not install x64 merely because Windows itself is 64-bit.

How to tell whether this fix worked

This fix worked if a Release application that was missing vcruntime140.dll starts normally. It did not solve the original Debug-runtime problem if the message still names vcruntime140d.dll.

If the application still requests the Debug file, return to application repair or contact the developer. The program may need to be rebuilt as Release.

Fix 6: Check antivirus quarantine and protection history

Security software can remove or quarantine files from unsigned development builds, unusual tools, mods, or incomplete application packages. Do not assume antivirus caused the error until you check its history.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For Microsoft Defender:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open it.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Review recent detections.
  7. Open the relevant event.
  8. Confirm the affected program path and filename.
  9. Restore or allow the file only if the original application and source are trusted.

Microsoft’s Protection History documentation explains the review and restore process. Protection History retains events for a limited period, so check it soon after the error appears.

Do not restore a file downloaded from an unknown DLL archive. Reinstall the complete application from its official source instead. If security software repeatedly removes the same file from a trusted vendor package, update the security definitions, contact the software vendor, and investigate the detection before adding exclusions.

How to tell whether quarantine was the cause

The diagnosis is supported when:

  • Protection History names the affected application or DLL.
  • The file returns after an authorized restore or application reinstall.
  • The program starts only when the trusted application is intact.
  • The vendor confirms the file belongs to its package.

If there is no related detection, continue with architecture and dependency checks rather than changing antivirus settings.

Rank #3

Fix 7: Investigate a DLL that exists but still cannot load

A file can appear in a folder and still fail to load. The visible error may name vcruntime140d.dll even when the underlying problem is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The file is the wrong architecture.
  • The file is damaged.
  • The file came from a different Visual Studio toolset.
  • A dependency of the file is missing.
  • The executable expects another Debug runtime DLL.
  • The application is loading a different copy from another search path.
  • A dynamically loaded plugin is responsible.

Start with the executable and all native components installed beside it. For developers using Visual Studio, run:

dumpbin /DEPENDENTS path\to\program.exe

The command lists imported DLLs, but Microsoft notes that dynamically loaded DLLs may not appear. Inspect plugins and native modules separately when the program loads them at runtime. See Microsoft’s dependency inspection guidance.

Do not solve this by copying a file from another computer. A different toolset update or architecture can make the replacement unusable, and companion Debug DLLs may still be missing.

How to tell whether the dependency chain is repaired

Use the program’s normal launch path after correcting the complete set of dependencies. A successful result is a clean launch without a new missing-DLL message. If the error names another file, record that filename and inspect the dependency chain again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 8: Use DISM and SFC only for broader Windows corruption

vcruntime140d.dll is associated with Visual Studio and MSVC Debug deployment, not with the normal protected Windows system-file set. SFC and DISM do not normally install a missing Visual Studio Debug runtime.

Use these commands when multiple Windows components are failing, Windows system files are also damaged, or a broader repair is justified.

Run DISM and SFC

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Terminal.
  3. Right-click Windows Terminal.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. If User Account Control appears, select Yes.
  6. Open a Command Prompt tab if Terminal opens PowerShell.
  7. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Open an elevated Terminal or Command Prompt again.
  4. Run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows again.
  3. Test the affected application.

Microsoft documents this order in its System File Checker instructions.

Understand the result

  • If DISM reports that the restore operation completed successfully and SFC reports no integrity violations, Windows may be healthy, but the application can still have a bad Debug dependency.
  • If SFC repairs files, restart and test again.
  • If the commands report that they could not repair some files, review the Microsoft repair guidance and investigate broader Windows corruption.
  • If only one application fails with vcruntime140d.dll, return to that application’s installer or build configuration.

When repeatedly running SFC and DISM leaves you guessing about which component changed, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a free scan that shows what it identifies; the repair is performed by the full version, and it remains optional because a program-specific reinstall is still the definitive fix when that program owns the broken package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 9: Check drivers only when the DLL belongs to a driver package

A graphics-driver reinstall is not a normal remedy for a missing MSVC Debug runtime. Device Manager is relevant only when the error appeared with a hardware utility, driver control panel, capture tool, printer package, or another vendor component whose installer owns the affected files.

Check Device Manager

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Device Manager.
  3. Open it.
  4. Expand the device category associated with the failing software, such as Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, Printers, or Network adapters.
  5. Right-click the relevant device.
  6. Select Properties.
  7. Open the Driver tab.
  8. Review the provider, date, and version.
  9. Select Update Driver if an update is available through your normal vendor or Windows process.
  10. If the issue began immediately after a driver change, select Roll Back Driver when available.
  11. Restart Windows.
  12. Repair or reinstall the vendor application that showed the error.

Do not remove a working device driver merely because a separate game or desktop application reports vcruntime140d.dll. The connection must be supported by the timing and the software package involved.

When manually checking dozens of driver versions becomes the difficult part, Outbyte Driver Updater can perform a free scan showing which drivers it identifies; driver installation is handled by the full version, and it is optional because a vendor application reinstall remains the right fix when that application owns the missing DLL.

How to tell whether the driver path was relevant

The driver-related fix is supported when:

  • The failing program is supplied with the hardware or driver package.
  • The driver installer repairs or replaces the application files.
  • The program starts after the vendor package is repaired.
  • Device Manager no longer shows a related device problem.

If a standalone application still requests vcruntime140d.dll, use its application repair or Release-build path instead.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 10: Consider System Restore after a recent system change

System Restore can help when the problem began immediately after removing Visual Studio, changing system software, or installing an update and an appropriate restore point exists. It is not a substitute for obtaining a correct Release application.

Run System Restore

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point from before the error began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Review the applications and drivers that will be affected.
  6. Select Close after reviewing the list.
  7. Select Next.
  8. Select Finish.
  9. Confirm the restore operation.
  10. Let Windows restart and complete the process.

Microsoft explains the process and its effects in its System Restore documentation.

System Restore normally rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs while leaving personal files alone. It may not repair a vendor application that was incorrectly packaged as Debug. If the same application still requests vcruntime140d.dll, repair or reinstall that application.

What not to do

Do not download the DLL from a random archive

Avoid websites offering individual DLL downloads. A replacement can be:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The wrong architecture.
  • From the wrong Visual Studio toolset.
  • Missing required companion Debug DLLs.
  • Damaged or modified.
  • Incompatible with the executable.
  • Unrelated to the actual loader failure.

A file that merely has the right name does not prove that it is safe or usable. Use the original application installer, Visual Studio Installer for private development, or Microsoft’s official Release runtime pages when the application actually needs a Release runtime.

Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64

System directories are not a general repair location for application dependencies. Copying a Debug DLL into them can create conflicts and still leave the application with a missing dependency or architecture mismatch.

Microsoft does document controlled local or central deployment of Debug DLLs for test machines. That is different from publicly distributing a Debug runtime or copying an arbitrary file into a Windows directory.

Do not run regsvr32 on this runtime DLL

Do not run:

regsvr32 vcruntime140d.dll

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. An ordinary Visual C++ runtime DLL is not repaired by registration. The command may produce an entry-point error or simply distract from the real issue. Microsoft describes the command in its regsvr32 documentation and explains the DllRegisterServer requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not enable random Windows Features

Opening Windows Features will not install the MSVC Debug runtime.

To inspect the available features:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Turn Windows features on or off.
  3. Open the result.
  4. Review the list.
  5. Leave features unchanged unless a separate application requirement specifically identifies one.
  6. Select Cancel or OK only after making an intentional change.

.NET Framework features, legacy components, and optional Windows features do not replace the Microsoft Visual C++ Debug runtime. Enable them only when the affected program’s documentation specifically requires them.

Do not reinstall DirectX or a graphics driver automatically

DirectX, .NET, and graphics drivers are not normal fixes for a missing MSVC Debug DLL. Driver repair becomes relevant only when the named file belongs to a larger hardware vendor package, as described earlier.

Why the normal Redistributable often fails

The filename difference is easy to overlook:

vcruntime140.dll   = normal Release runtime
vcruntime140d.dll  = Debug runtime

The d suffix is not cosmetic. It identifies a different runtime configuration. The ordinary v14 Redistributable packages are designed for Release application deployment, while Microsoft’s Debug runtime guidance treats Debug DLLs as development or test-machine components rather than ordinary redistributable dependencies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is why installing the latest x64 package can fail to change an error from a 32-bit Debug application, and why installing both x86 and x64 Release packages can still fail to satisfy a program requesting vcruntime140d.dll.

The package architecture and runtime configuration must both match:

  1. Release versus Debug.
  2. x86 versus x64 versus ARM64.
  3. Compatible Visual Studio toolset.
  4. Complete native dependency chain.

Frequently asked questions

Is vcruntime140d.dll legitimate?

Yes. It is a legitimate Microsoft Visual C++ Debug runtime DLL. That does not mean every copy found on a computer is trustworthy. The safe copy should come from the matching Visual Studio installation or the application’s trusted installer.

Is it a Windows file?

It is not a normal Windows-protected component. It is associated with the MSVC and Visual Studio toolchain. Windows Update, System Restore, or SFC should not be treated as the normal source for this Debug DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the difference between vcruntime140d.dll and vcruntime140.dll?

The first is the Debug runtime and the second is the normal Release runtime. A program built with /MDd may request the d version. A distributable Release build commonly uses /MD and requests the non-Debug runtime instead.

Does the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable install vcruntime140d.dll?

Not as an ordinary redistributable dependency. The official Release packages provide Release runtime files. They may fix a separate error involving vcruntime140.dll, but they are not the definitive solution for a program that requests vcruntime140d.dll.

Why does the filename end in d?

Microsoft uses the suffix to identify Debug runtime DLLs. It indicates that the program or one of its native dependencies was built for Debug operation.

Why would a game, Qt application, Fortran program, plugin, installer, or desktop application request it?

Any native component built with a Debug MSVC runtime can request it. The top-level program may be Release while a plugin, wrapper, library, or other native dependency is Debug. A public application or game that requests it may have been packaged incorrectly or may include a developer-only component.

Does the application need to be rebuilt?

If you own the source code and intend to distribute the program, usually yes. Rebuild the application and every native dependency as Release, using /MD or /MT as appropriate. Do not rebuild only the main executable while leaving a Debug plugin or library in the package.

Should I install Visual Studio?

Install or modify Visual Studio when you are developing or privately testing the program. Ordinary users should normally repair or reinstall the affected application and obtain a corrected Release build instead.

Does x86 versus x64 matter?

Yes. A 32-bit application needs x86 dependencies even on 64-bit Windows. A 64-bit application needs x64 dependencies. ARM64 applications need compatible ARM64 components. Matching only the filename is not enough.

Why can the error remain when the DLL exists?

The file may be the wrong architecture, damaged, from the wrong toolset, or dependent on another missing DLL. The executable may also be loading a different copy, or a plugin loaded later may be the component that requests it.

Is regsvr32 relevant?

No, not for this runtime DLL. regsvr32 is for self-registering component DLLs that expose the required registration entry point. Registering a runtime library does not install or repair its dependencies.

Should I run SFC first?

Not when only one application reports vcruntime140d.dll. Start with application repair, architecture checks, or a Release rebuild. Use DISM and SFC when several Windows components are failing or genuine Windows system files are also damaged.

Could antivirus have removed it?

Yes, particularly for an unsigned development build or unusual software, but verify that in Windows Security’s Protection History. Do not restore an untrusted DLL from an unknown source.

Should I reinstall Windows drivers?

Only when the affected file belongs to a driver or hardware vendor package. A normal desktop application or game asking for vcruntime140d.dll should be repaired through its own installer.

Does the number 140 identify one universal file version?

No. The filename does not provide a universal version, size, or hash. Exact files vary by Visual Studio and MSVC toolset, update, architecture, and build.

Can I use a Debug DLL in a public application?

Do not treat a Debug DLL as a normal public redistribution file. Use a proper Release build and the appropriate Release runtime deployment. Debug files belong on controlled development or testing machines.

What to include when asking for help

If these steps do not resolve the error, provide:

  • The exact error text.
  • The name and source of the affected program.
  • Whether it is your own build.
  • Whether the filename ends in d.
  • Whether the program is x86, x64, or ARM64.
  • The Windows version.
  • Whether the issue began after reinstalling the program, removing Visual Studio, updating Windows, or antivirus activity.
  • Any other filenames named in the error.
  • Whether the file exists and where it was found.
  • Whether other applications fail in the same way.
  • The result of application repair, reinstall, or launcher verification.

Do not post a copied DLL as the proposed solution. The useful diagnosis is whether the program is a Debug build, whether a native dependency is mismatched, or whether the application package is incomplete.

For most ordinary users, the correct path is to repair or reinstall the affected application and obtain its Release build. For developers, install the matching C++ workload for private Debug testing, then rebuild every distributable native component with compatible Release runtime settings.
