Choose Challengers EMEA if you are entering through regional competition or do not hold a VCT place. Challengers is the more difficult, less predictable route, but Riot’s 2026 format gives a Challenger team a direct path to Champions: qualify through Challengers EMEA 3 or its Last Chance Qualifier, win through Stage 2 Play-Ins and Playoffs, and avoid the former Ascension step.
The practical decision is therefore not simply “which league is better?” It is whether your team has a VCT place, which qualification gates it can realistically survive, and whether it can fund the travel, documentation and staffing needed when a regional run turns into an international event.

VCT EMEA and Challengers EMEA at a glance
These are different entry points into the same EMEA competitive ecosystem. VCT EMEA is the established international-league environment. Challengers EMEA is the regional route for teams developing through open or regional competition and for organizations that do not hold a VCT EMEA place.
| Decision axis | VCT EMEA | Challengers EMEA |
|---|---|---|
| Entry position | Requires an established VCT EMEA place | Regional/open route into the EMEA ecosystem |
| Competitive level | Immediate international-league environment | Regional leagues, then Challengers EMEA events and qualifiers |
| Route to Champions | League stages, playoffs and championship points | Stage 3 and LCQ into Stage 2 Play-Ins, then Playoffs and Finals |
| Risk profile | Fewer qualification gates after entry, but top-tier performance pressure | More elimination gates and greater qualification variance |
| Operating needs | Dense best-of-three schedule and top-tier staffing | Regional travel, qualifier management and readiness for possible international travel |
| Development value | Tests a roster against established VCT opponents | Builds through regional play and can expose players to VCT teams |
There is no published, reliable qualification probability, salary benchmark or return-on-investment figure for either option. Those decisions require your own match results, payroll, travel budget and organizational targets.

What changed in Riot’s 2026 competition system
Challengers can now reach Champions without Ascension
Riot describes the 2026 change plainly: “For the first time, Challenger teams can reach Champions directly by qualifying to Stage 2 Playoffs.” Ascension is no longer part of this route. Instead, Challenger teams compete for Stage 2 places and then face partnered teams while trying to secure a place at Champions.
That change makes Challengers a genuine championship route rather than only a development league. It does not make the route easy: a team must first earn an EMEA Challengers position, survive the late-season qualification structure, pass Stage 2 Play-Ins and then continue through the VCT EMEA Stage 2 bracket.
Where the four Challenger places come from
EMEA keeps a three-stage Challengers season. Challengers EMEA 3 is the decisive event for the direct regional places. It is a 16-team competition: eight teams receive regional-league slots and eight more enter through circuit points. Its top three teams qualify directly for VCT EMEA Stage 2 Play-Ins.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe fourth Challenger place is decided by a Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ). A team that misses the top three in Challengers EMEA 3 can therefore still have a route forward, provided it wins the LCQ. The result is four Challenger entries in the Stage 2 Play-In field, not four separate leagues or four guaranteed qualification attempts for every organization.
How the 2026 path to Champions works
VCT EMEA’s partnered-league route
A VCT EMEA team starts with the advantage of an established league place. Its Champions campaign runs through the VCT EMEA league structure: league stages, playoffs and championship points. There are fewer qualification gates after entry than on the Challengers route, but every match is against established VCT opponents and the performance standard is immediate.
This route suits an organization that already has the place, a roster capable of playing a dense best-of-three schedule, and staff for scouting, strategy, performance support and travel. The place removes the regional-entry hurdle; it does not remove the need to qualify through the season’s competitive stages.

The Challengers EMEA route
- Enter the EMEA regional ecosystem. A team coming from open competition or another regional entry point must first meet the applicable Challengers eligibility requirements and compete in the regional leagues.
- Build placement and circuit points. Results across the season determine which teams receive the later Challengers EMEA 3 slots and which teams qualify through points.
- Reach Challengers EMEA 3. The event contains 16 teams: eight regional-league entrants and eight circuit-point entrants.
- Finish in the top three or win the LCQ. The top three in Challengers EMEA 3 go directly to Stage 2 Play-Ins. The LCQ supplies the fourth Challenger team.
- Play Stage 2 Play-Ins. Four Challenger teams join eight VCT EMEA teams in a double-elimination bracket.
- Continue through Stage 2. The teams that advance from Play-Ins enter the VCT EMEA Stage 2 pathway, where Playoffs provide the direct bridge to Champions under the 2026 system.
Riot’s EMEA announcement calls the four-team qualification “the first step towards Champions.” That wording matters: qualifying from Challengers gets a team into the Play-In, not automatically into Champions.

Stage 2 begins with 12 VCT EMEA teams arranged in two groups of six. The Play-In then combines four Challenger teams with eight VCT EMEA teams in a double-elimination bracket. This is the point where a regional team meets the partnered-league field and must convert its Challengers run into VCT-level results.
For a Challenger organization, the bracket creates a sharp operating transition. Regional preparation must be followed by VCT-quality opponent preparation, international travel readiness and roster availability during a compressed competitive window.
Which team profile should choose each path?
Choose VCT EMEA when you already hold the place
- Your organization controls an eligible VCT EMEA place. Challengers cannot substitute for a place you already possess; it would add qualification risk rather than improve access.
- You can sustain a dense best-of-three schedule. The partnered league demands consistent preparation, review and player support rather than a short tournament peak.
- You want immediate exposure to established VCT opponents. The roster is tested at the highest EMEA level from the start of the season.
- Your goal is a more direct Champions campaign. The team still has to perform in league stages, playoffs and the championship-points system, but it does not first need to earn a Challengers EMEA 3 or LCQ place.
Choose Challengers EMEA when you need the ladder
- You do not hold a VCT EMEA place. Challengers is the relevant competitive entry route instead of an unavailable partnered slot.
- The roster is entering through regional or open competition. The three-stage season creates a progression from regional results to a VCT opportunity.
- You are building players and systems. Regional play provides meaningful competition before the roster faces VCT teams.
- You accept qualification variance in exchange for upside. The route has more elimination points, but a successful run can now lead directly toward Champions without Ascension.
When neither path is realistic yet
If your organization cannot staff a regional season, maintain player availability through several qualification gates or prepare documentation and accommodation on short notice, the nominal route is less important than readiness. A Challengers place without the operational ability to attend the next stage is not a practical championship plan; a VCT place without the staffing to handle its schedule creates a different form of competitive risk.
Eligibility and roster rules that can change your choice
Academy teams
Academy teams may compete in regional Challengers, but they are not eligible for the Path to Champions. An academy roster can therefore use regional competition for development, yet it cannot take the four-team Challenger slot into Stage 2 Play-Ins and continue toward Champions.

Affiliate teams
Affiliate teams remain eligible for the Path to Champions. The restriction is roster movement: transfers between a main roster and its affiliate are limited during Stage 2 Playoffs and Champions roster-lock periods. An organization using an affiliate structure must plan its player registrations and emergency substitutions before those lock periods, rather than assuming it can freely exchange players when a qualification opportunity appears.

Eligibility check before entering
- Confirm whether the competing entity is a main, academy or affiliate team.
- Verify that the entity and each player meet the current Challengers eligibility requirements for the relevant EMEA competition.
- Map any main-to-affiliate player movement against the Stage 2 Playoffs and Champions roster-lock windows.
- Keep the roster that earns the qualification place available for the Play-In and later stages.
These checks should happen before committing budget or advertising a “path to Champions.” Regional participation alone does not give an academy team that path, and affiliate movement rules can prevent a late roster rebuild.
Travel support, visas and the costs teams still carry
What Riot provides
For each Challenger team that qualifies for the Path to Champions, Riot Games offers a $75,000 cash stipend (Riot Games, 2025) to help with travel, visas and attendance. It is support for the qualification trip, not a statement that the entire event is cost-free.
What the team must arrange
- Documentation: the team remains responsible for securing the visas and other travel documents its players and staff require.
- Accommodation: lodging is still the organization’s responsibility.
- Readiness for movement: qualified teams are expected to be ready to travel to international-league hubs and Stage 2 roadshows.
- Staffing: coaches, analysts, managers and player-support personnel must be available on the event timetable, not only for the regional matches that produced qualification.
Budget the stipend as a restricted qualification-travel resource. Your own plan still needs a contingency for document delays, additional staff, accommodation changes and the possibility that the team advances beyond its initial Play-In schedule.
How to plan a Challengers run from open competition
Phase 1: establish an eligible organization
Decide which legal and competitive entity will enter. This is where academy-versus-affiliate status matters: an academy can play regional Challengers but cannot continue on the Path to Champions, while an eligible affiliate must manage player-movement restrictions.
Phase 2: treat regional results as a season, not a single qualifier
The EMEA system retains three Challengers stages. Build a roster and practice schedule that can produce placement and circuit points across the season. A short-term tournament peak is insufficient if the team needs the points-based route into the 16-team Challengers EMEA 3 field.
Phase 3: target the two available qualification mechanisms
There are two ways to become one of the four Challenger entries: finish among the top three in Challengers EMEA 3, or win the LCQ for the fourth place. Plan scouting and player workload around both possibilities rather than treating the LCQ as an afterthought.

Phase 4: prepare for the VCT opponent pool
Play-In preparation should use the VCT EMEA teams that may appear in the eight-team portion of the bracket. The team needs opponent-specific preparation, match-day staff and a travel plan ready before qualification is confirmed.
Phase 5: protect the qualified roster
Once the team qualifies, avoid relying on last-minute main-to-affiliate changes. Roster-lock restrictions apply during Stage 2 Playoffs and Champions periods, so the players who earn the place must remain available under the applicable rules.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Operational comparison: what each route demands
Schedule and preparation
VCT EMEA requires continuous preparation for a dense best-of-three league schedule and the pressure of playing established opponents every stage. Challengers requires more qualification administration: regional matches, points tracking, Challengers EMEA 3 or LCQ planning, and a rapid transition if the team reaches Play-Ins.
Competitive risk
VCT EMEA has fewer gates after entry, but poor results occur against the strongest established field. Challengers has more gates and therefore more ways for a season to end before the VCT stage. Its advantage is optionality: a roster can develop regionally and still have a direct Champions route if it clears every gate.
Organizational learning
VCT gives immediate information about how a roster performs against VCT opponents. Challengers gives a longer development ladder and can expose players to VCT teams at the point where the Play-In bracket brings the two groups together. Choose the environment that matches the question your organization needs answered now: “Can this roster compete in VCT immediately?” or “Can this roster develop and earn its VCT opportunity?”

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming Challengers is still an Ascension-only route
That is outdated for 2026. Ascension is no longer part of this path; the target is Stage 2 Play-Ins, then Stage 2 Playoffs and the direct Champions opportunity described by Riot.

Calling a Play-In qualification a Champions qualification
The four Challenger teams have earned entry to Stage 2 Play-Ins. They still face eight VCT EMEA teams in the double-elimination bracket and must advance through the Stage 2 pathway.
Ignoring the LCQ
Only the top three Challengers EMEA 3 teams qualify directly. The LCQ is the mechanism for the fourth Challenger place and should be part of the season plan.
Budgeting only for match fees
Travel documents, accommodation, international movement and staff availability remain team responsibilities even with Riot’s stipend. Confirm those requirements before committing to the route.
Using academy eligibility as a substitute for a Champions plan
An academy team can compete in regional Challengers but cannot enter the Path to Champions. If the organization’s objective is Champions, it must use an eligible entity.
What is not established by the published format
The format announcements do not establish a reliable percentage chance of qualifying, a standard player salary, a typical team budget or a return-on-investment figure for VCT EMEA versus Challengers. Treat any precise market-wide number as a team-specific claim unless it is supported by your own accounts or an identified official publication.
The published facts do establish the route, the qualification gates, the eligibility distinctions and the travel stipend. Use those fixed points to build a forecast from your roster’s match results, staffing plan and available cash rather than from an invented average.
Final decision
If you already have an eligible VCT EMEA place, stay in VCT EMEA: it is the most direct way to operate in the established international league and pursue Champions through the league’s stages, playoffs and championship points. If you do not have that place, choose Challengers EMEA and design the organization around its full 2026 sequence—regional stages, Challengers EMEA 3 or LCQ, Stage 2 Play-Ins and the VCT Stage 2 pathway. The route is harder to predict, but it is now a direct route to Champions rather than a detour through Ascension.
