It is an homage, not a miniature version of the original vector CRT.
What is the Vectrex Mini?
Brendan’s Vectrex Mini project is a compact, working recreation built as a learning project in 3D-printed case design. Its maker describes it as a miniaturized Vectrex, but the hardware substitutes modern LCD emulation for the original console’s distinctive display.

The original Vectrex appeared in 1982 and was discontinued less than a year and a half later, according to Hackster.io’s coverage. Hackster reports 28 official game releases. The system stood apart from many consoles of its era because its cathode-ray display traced the lines that formed objects rather than building a picture from a raster of pixels.
How does the Mini recreate the original?
LCD and emulation instead of a vector monitor
The build pairs a 2.5-inch LCD with a Raspberry Pi 2 Model B running a Vectrex emulator. Software renders the games’ vector-style line graphics on the LCD; it does not reproduce the original display technology or its image exactly. Raster screens form pictures by scanning rows of pixels, while the original Vectrex directed its cathode ray along the onscreen lines.

Color is simulated
The original Vectrex display was monochrome. Translucent overlays supplied color tints and interface details for individual games. The Mini uses a color LCD and emulation to imitate that effect, rather than physical overlays on a vector monitor.
Custom controls and printed cases
The control setup uses an Arduino Pro Micro and a KY-023 joystick module. The console enclosure and controller case are 3D printed; Hackster identifies the printer used for the build as a Creality Ender 3 V2. The project page describes its display as a Waveshare clone. Those are documented parts of this particular build, not a guarantee that any substitute component will fit or work without adjustments.
Can you buy a Vectrex Mini?
The available project documentation identifies a maker build; it does not establish a store listing, commercial release, price or current availability for a ready-made Vectrex Mini. The original Vectrex is described as collectible and hard to find, but the cited coverage gives no current prices. Anyone considering an original console or parts should check current listings and condition independently.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What do you need to build one?
The documented build uses the following core hardware. Exact compatibility, availability and fit should be checked before buying parts, especially if choosing alternatives to the listed models.
- Raspberry Pi 2 Model B to run the emulator.
- A 2.5-inch LCD; the maker describes using a Waveshare-clone screen.
- Arduino Pro Micro and KY-023 joystick module for the controller.
- 3D-printed console and controller cases, with the project’s files linked below.
The project discussion links to the Thingiverse case files. The project page also links to a 4K build video that can help illustrate the assembly. The maker says the build includes commercial games and prototypes, but that statement does not establish that game ROMs are licensed for redistribution. Source game software through lawful channels; the case files are for the hardware enclosure.
Build the Mini or seek out an original?
| Choice | Display | Availability and cost | Effort | Software |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Original Vectrex | Original vector monitor, preserving the display technology the Mini imitates. | Described by the cited coverage as collectible and hard to find; current price not stated by the source. | Find and assess a working original rather than sourcing components and printing a case. | Use software compatible with the original hardware; specific access terms are not established by the cited sources. |
| Vectrex Mini build | LCD with emulator-rendered vector-style graphics and simulated overlay color. | No ready-made product or price established by the cited sources; component availability and cost vary. | Source compatible electronics, assemble the controls and print the enclosure. | The project owner says the build includes commercial games and prototypes; rights and redistribution permissions are not established. |
The original is the choice for the authentic display technology. The Mini is a compact DIY route for people interested in the Vectrex experience and the process of building a small emulation system, with the trade-off that its LCD image is an approximation.
