In the expansion’s story, an investigation into unusual Legiana behavior leads the Research Commission to the Hoarfrost Reach—and to the discovery that the legendary dragon is real within the game’s world.
Who is Velkhana?
Velkhana is a fictional Elder Dragon in Capcom’s Monster Hunter World: Iceborne. Capcom calls it “the flagship monster of Iceborne” and says it can “command the ice element in impressive ways.” Its singing-like roar is another distinctive part of its official description. Capcom’s monster overview presents the creature as mysterious rather than supplying a detailed set of numerical or biological specifications.
Velkhana’s role in the Iceborne story
The story begins with unusual behavior among Legiana. The Research Commission investigates and travels to the Hoarfrost Reach, a remote New World region where extreme cold shapes the environment and its ecosystem. There, the hunters discover that Velkhana is more than a legend. Capcom described the mystery as the catalyst for a new story and locale. Capcom’s 2019 Iceborne announcement also frames the Reach as a place where hunters need appropriate gear and items to stay warm.
What powers and features does Velkhana have?
Ice control
Capcom’s official Japanese product description calls Velkhana the Ice Dragon and describes it controlling cold, exhaling extremely low-temperature breath, and making large formations of ice appear in empty space. These are fictional abilities in the game’s lore, not claims about real-world animals or climate.

Roar
Capcom’s monster overview notes that Velkhana’s roar sounds like singing. It is a concise but unusual detail that distinguishes the dragon’s presentation from a generic portrayal of a powerful ice monster.

How Velkhana fits Iceborne’s hunts
The Hoarfrost Reach’s cold-weather setting gives Iceborne’s survival mechanics a clear role: hunters need to prepare for the environment as well as the monster. The expansion also introduced an upgraded Slinger that can be used while a weapon is drawn, along with the Clutch Claw, which lets hunters grapple onto monsters, attack them, or briefly guide them. These features place Velkhana in a hunt system built around positioning and interacting directly with large monsters.
Capcom’s Master Rank event schedule lists challenge quests that require slaying Velkhana, including “Farewell to the Frozen” and “Wearer of the Iceborne Crown.” The schedule is not a guarantee that either quest is currently available on every platform or in every region. Check Capcom’s event quest schedule for the published rotations.
