Velocity 2X is a fast-paced action game that switches between top-down space shooting and side-scrolling platforming. Its defining idea is the Quarp Drive: teleportation and timed movement make navigation part of the challenge, not just a way to get between fights. Critics praised how those systems fit together, though GameSpot found the finale anticlimactic.
What kind of game is Velocity 2X?
Published by FuturLab, Velocity 2X launched on PS4 on September 2, 2014. The US PlayStation Store describes it as a sequel to Velocity Ultra: players use the Quarp Drive during space combat, then dock and continue on foot. The official Sierra Games page describes the two modes as top-down vertical shooting and side-scrolling action-platforming.

The shift between ship and on-foot sections gives the game its changing rhythm. In both, the Quarp Drive supports quick repositioning, while a clock puts pressure on movement. Combat, traversal, and timing therefore work together rather than feeling like separate challenges. The electronic soundtrack was co-created by composer Joris de Man, according to Sierra Games.
What did reviewers think of Velocity 2X?
GameSpot: 9/10
In its September 2014 review, GameSpot rated the game 9/10, praising its layered mechanics, animation, soundtrack, and sense of flow. Reviewer Daniel Starkey summed up the appeal this way: “Shooting down enemy ships isn’t interesting on its own, but when combined with an exceptional system for movement and tied to an omnipresent clock, it feels truly special.” GameSpot’s main stated reservation was that the finale felt anticlimactic. Is Velocity 2X worth playing?
If you enjoy action games that reward quick decisions and precise movement, Velocity 2X has a clear appeal: it combines shooting with platforming and makes teleportation central to both. The strongest critical praise focuses on how its movement, combat, clock pressure, presentation, and music reinforce one another. If you need a consistently satisfying finale, GameSpot’s criticism is worth noting; it is a specific reservation rather than a broad objection to the game’s design.

The PS4 PlayStation Store lists Velocity 2X: Critical Mass Edition, described as including expansions and special features. A physical Critical Mass Edition is also discussed in a June 2026 GamesRadar feature, which reports that its price is rising. That report does not establish current price, retailer stock, or availability in a particular region. Check the format, region compatibility, listing, and price before buying; the GamesRadar feature is not proof that a copy is currently in stock.
