POLARIS is a sci-fi PvE third-person shooter from Variable State and POLARIS Team, released for Windows PC on Steam on January 29, 2025. You can play alone or online with up to three other players, taking on the Regime in missions built around flight, combat, and destructible environments.
What kind of game is POLARIS?
POLARIS is a cooperative PvE shooter: players fight computer-controlled enemies rather than competing against other players as the central mode. Variable State describes it as a one-to-four-player third-person shooter. Its setting centers on defending home worlds from the Regime, a hostile colonizing force. Variable State’s POLARIS page and the Steam listing outline the premise and gameplay.
Steam frames the action around extraction-style missions: fly into an area, fight the Regime, destroy enemy infrastructure, and get out. That makes “extraction shooter” a useful description of the mission loop, but the available product information does not establish every mode or mechanic players might associate with that label.
Can you play POLARIS solo or with friends?
Steam lists both single-player and online co-op, with up to four players in a session. You can therefore approach the game alone or form a squad of up to four. The official listing does not establish whether it supports local co-op, matchmaking, or cross-play, so check the current Steam information if one of those features is essential to your plans.

- 3 to 5 players, ages 14+
- Double-sided board
- Play time: 60 minutes
What makes its combat different?
The advertised hook is the combination of aerial movement and environmental destruction. Players can fly, use abilities, weapons, and vehicles, while destructible cityscapes and terrain let combat change the battlefield. Steam describes destroying enemy infrastructure as part of the objective, rather than treating the environment as an entirely static backdrop.
Those are product features, not evidence of a particular level of performance or of how much destruction is possible in every mission. The official pages describe the systems but do not provide independent testing or a critical consensus.
