There is no objective “genius” test for puzzle games, and the available evidence supports three useful examples—not a verified list of ten. These games challenge different habits: spotting visual patterns, rewriting a game’s rules, and tackling puzzles that players have rated especially difficult. The right choice depends on which kind of thinking you enjoy and how much the game lets you do when you get stuck.
What makes a puzzle game feel difficult?
Difficulty is personal. A visual rule may be obvious to one player and invisible to another; experience with a genre can make unfamiliar-looking puzzles feel routine. Some games make their hardest challenges optional, while others put a puzzle directly in the path of progress. Rather than treating “hardest” as an objective ranking, compare the kind of reasoning a game asks for, how it introduces its mechanics, and what options you have when you hit a wall.
- Visual pattern discovery: infer a rule by observing a puzzle and its surroundings.
- Rule manipulation: change the rules that govern the puzzle itself.
- Spatial or logical planning: work out a sequence of moves under constraints. The available evidence here does not establish a detailed description of the mechanics of Stephen’s Sausage Roll, so it is included as a community-rated example rather than characterized more specifically.
Three hard puzzle games to consider
The Witness
The Witness is an open-world puzzle game built around panels and exploration across an island. Apple’s App Store listing describes it as containing over 500 puzzles; that is a product-count claim, not a measure of difficulty. Its central challenge is learning to notice and apply visual patterns.
Creator Jonathan Blow explained why exploration matters to the game’s difficulty: “In The Witness, we can make puzzles as difficult or as subtle as we want, because if you are stuck in an area, you can simply go somewhere else.” (PlayStation.Blog interview.) That means getting stuck on one area need not halt all progress, though the quote does not mean every puzzle can be bypassed.

Baba Is You
Baba Is You makes rules into part of the puzzle. Its official description explains that the rules are physical objects in the game world, and players can manipulate them. Instead of only finding a route through a fixed setup, you may need to change what objects mean or how the world behaves. This can be demanding if you tend to treat a game’s rules as fixed rather than as pieces to rearrange.
Stephen’s Sausage Roll
Stephen’s Sausage Roll appears among highly rated difficult puzzle games in a player-voted ranking. That is evidence of a community reputation, not a universal difficulty score: individual rankings reflect their voters’ experience and preferences. The available evidence does not establish its mechanics in enough detail to describe them confidently here.

How to choose a hard puzzle game
Before picking a game, consider what kind of challenge you want rather than relying on a single “hardest” label.
- Choose a reasoning style: Do you want to discover visual patterns, manipulate rules, or plan through constrained spaces?
- Consider how mechanics are taught: Does the game demonstrate a new idea through play, or expect you to infer it with little explanation?
- Check what blocks progress: Are the toughest puzzles optional, or must you solve them to continue?
- Look for ways to recover: Can you explore elsewhere or use hints when stuck? The Witness is one documented example of an explorable game where leaving an area is part of the design.
- Verify platform and controls: Availability and accessibility depend on the particular game and edition. Check the current listing for your platform before buying.
Why this is not a ranked top ten
The evidence supports these three examples, but not a verified slate of ten games or a reliable numerical comparison of their difficulty. No dependable statistic establishes how many players finish these games or how often players solve their hardest puzzles. Community votes can indicate that a game has a reputation for being challenging, but they cannot settle which game is hardest for everyone.

Technical research into the computational complexity of modeled puzzle games addresses formal problem-solving models, not how difficult an ordinary player will find a commercial game. It should not be treated as a player-difficulty rating.
