vfpodbc.dll Won’t Load: Diagnose FoxPro ODBC Errors Safely

vfpodbc.dll is the Microsoft Visual FoxPro ODBC driver library. If vfpodbc.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, the program usually needs a repaired FoxPro application or the historical Microsoft Visual FoxPro ODBC driver package.

This is not a general Windows runtime file. It is normally used by older Visual FoxPro programs and by software that reads FoxPro database tables through ODBC. Common examples include payroll, accounting, reporting, inventory, and business applications, along with some Access or Excel database connections.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Use this order of checks. It avoids downloading an unsafe loose DLL and identifies whether the problem is the file, the ODBC registration, a missing dependency, or the application itself.

Start with this diagnostic checklist

Before changing Windows, record these details:

  1. Which program shows the error?
Write down the application name and version if it is visible.

  2. When does the error occur?
Does it appear when the program starts, when opening a database, or when creating an Access or Excel link?

  3. Was anything recently changed?
Check whether Windows, Office, antivirus software, the application, or the computer itself was recently upgraded or restored.

  4. Is the calling application 32-bit or 64-bit?
The historical Microsoft Visual FoxPro ODBC driver is generally a 32-bit driver. A 32-bit program needs the 32-bit ODBC administrator even when Windows itself is 64-bit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  5. Was the application copied instead of installed?
Copying an old program folder to a new computer often leaves behind its registry entries, ODBC registration, and dependencies.

  6. Did antivirus quarantine anything?
Review protection history before restoring a file. A missing file after malware cleanup may be a legitimate quarantine event, or it may be a stale startup entry from software that is no longer installed.

Do not begin by copying vfpodbc.dll from a random download page into a Windows folder. The driver must be installed and registered as an ODBC component, and the replacement must match the application and its dependencies.

What vfpodbc.dll is

The file’s internal name is vfpodbc, and its developer is Microsoft Corporation. Its function is to let ODBC-aware software communicate with Visual FoxPro data, including FoxPro tables commonly stored in .DBF files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The historical end-user installer is named VFPODBC.MSI. Microsoft’s preserved release notes identify 6.1.8629.1 as a downloadable driver release. An older genuine file variant is listed as 32-bit version 6.0.8167.0, approximately 0.9 MB, but that does not make it the correct file for every application.

The driver is obsolete and no longer supported as a current Microsoft product. Visual FoxPro 9 reached the end of extended support on January 13, 2015, according to Microsoft’s Visual FoxPro lifecycle information.

Historically, the driver could arrive with MDAC or older Microsoft products. It should not be treated as a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 component, and Windows Update should not be expected to reinstall it automatically.

What the error message usually means

The wording provides useful clues, but it does not always identify the damaged item.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The program cannot start because vfpodbc.dll is missing”

The application cannot find the driver file or its installed registration. The most likely causes are:

  • The FoxPro application was never fully installed.
  • The application was copied from another computer.
  • The driver was removed during an upgrade or migration.
  • Antivirus software quarantined the file.
  • The application’s installer did not complete.

Repairing the original application is usually safer than replacing the DLL manually.

“The code execution cannot proceed because vfpodbc.dll was not found”

This is also commonly an installation or application-path problem. It does not prove that the correct solution is to place a file in System32 or beside the application executable.

“The specified module could not be found”

This message can mean that a dependency of vfpodbc.dll is missing. The named DLL may exist while another library required to load it does not.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reinstall the complete driver or application package rather than copying only vfpodbc.dll.

“The file is either not designed to run on Windows or contains an error”

This can indicate a wrong architecture, damaged file, incompatible version, or incomplete installation. A random replacement from another source can make this condition worse.

ODBC error 160 or “Specified driver could not be loaded”

An error such as:

ODBC – call failed.
Specified driver could not be loaded due to system error 0:
The operation completed successfully.
(Microsoft Visual FoxPro Driver, C:Windowssystem32vfpodbc.dll). (#160)

often points to an ODBC architecture, registration, or dependency problem rather than a simple missing file.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the program that needs FoxPro

This is the safest and most likely fix when one particular legacy application displays the error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the application has a repair option

  1. Close the affected program.
  2. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  3. Select Apps.
  4. Select Installed apps.
  5. Find the FoxPro-based application.
  6. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  7. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  8. Select Repair.
  9. Start the program again and test the database function.

If there is no Repair button:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs.
  3. Select Programs and Features.
  4. Select the affected application.
  5. Look for Repair, Change, or Modify.
  6. Follow the installer prompts.
  7. Restart Windows if the installer requests it.

If the repair option is unavailable or fails, uninstalling and reinstalling from the original vendor media may be necessary. Back up the program’s data first and confirm that you have the original license information and database location.

If you have the original installation media

Run the application’s installer as an administrator:

  1. Right-click the installer.
  2. Select Run as administrator.
  3. Choose the complete or typical installation.
  4. Allow the installer to install its database and ODBC components.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Open the program and test the operation that previously failed.

Do not simply copy the application folder from another computer. A proper installer can create ODBC driver registration, registry entries, configuration files, and supporting components that a file copy cannot reproduce.

Fix 2: Install the official or trusted historic ODBC package

If the application vendor specifically requires the Microsoft Visual FoxPro ODBC driver, look first for VFPODBC.MSI in the application’s original media, deployment share, or vendor-provided installer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft’s historic reference is the Microsoft Visual FoxPro ODBC Driver download page. The page’s current download availability may vary, so do not assume that an old Download Center link still provides an active package.

The package identity and release details are documented in the Visual FoxPro ODBC release notes. If your organization maintains old installation media, use the package that belongs to the application rather than substituting an arbitrary file version.

The normal end-user package is:

VFPODBC.MSI

Do not select VFPODBC.MSM unless you are a developer building an installer. The merge module is intended for embedding the driver in a Windows Installer package, not for ordinary end-user installation.

After installing:

  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Open the affected program.
  3. Test the original database or report operation.
  4. If the program still reports an ODBC error, continue with the architecture checks below.

Microsoft’s Visual FoxPro OLE DB Provider is a different component. It installs VfpOleDB.dll and does not replace vfpodbc.dll or repair an ODBC driver registration problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 3: Use the correct 32-bit ODBC administrator

A frequent cause of this error is creating the DSN in the wrong ODBC administrator.

On 64-bit Windows, there are separate ODBC tools:

32-bit ODBC administrator:
C:WindowsSysWOW64odbcad32.exe

64-bit ODBC administrator:
C:WindowsSystem32odbcad32.exe

The directory names are confusing. SysWOW64 contains the 32-bit system tools on 64-bit Windows, while System32 contains the 64-bit tools.

Use the 32-bit administrator when the calling program is 32-bit. This commonly includes older FoxPro applications and 32-bit editions of Microsoft Office.

Check whether the driver is installed

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Paste the following path:

text
C:WindowsSysWOW64odbcad32.exe

  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select the Drivers tab.
  3. Look for Microsoft Visual FoxPro Driver.

If the driver is listed, its installation is visible to 32-bit applications. If it is not listed, repair the application or install the correct VFPODBC.MSI package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft explains the separate driver tools in its ODBC driver troubleshooting guidance and driver-listing documentation.

Recreate the DSN in the matching tool

If the application uses a named data source:

  1. Open C:WindowsSysWOW64odbcad32.exe for a 32-bit application.
  2. Select the User DSN or System DSN tab, depending on how the application was configured.
  3. Select the old FoxPro data source.
  4. Choose Configure and verify the database path.
  5. If the entry is damaged, select Remove.
  6. Select Add.
  7. Choose Microsoft Visual FoxPro Driver.
  8. Enter the data source name used by the application.
  9. Select the correct database or table location.
  10. Save the DSN.
  11. Start the application and test the connection.

If the application is 64-bit, use:

C:WindowsSystem32odbcad32.exe

A 32-bit application cannot load a 64-bit ODBC driver, and a 64-bit application cannot load a 32-bit ODBC driver. Microsoft documents this architecture requirement in its ODBC driver installation guidance.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine and security history

Security software may remove or quarantine an old driver because legacy components can have unusual file age, signing, or behavior characteristics. Do not disable antivirus merely to obtain a DLL.

Review Windows Security history

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open the application.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Review entries from the time the error began.
  7. Expand any item related to the affected application or driver.

Only restore a file when you have confirmed that it belongs to the installed application and came from trusted installation media. After restoring, repair or reinstall the complete application so the driver registration and dependencies are restored as well.

If the application was removed after malware cleanup, the missing DLL may belong to an unwanted or abandoned program. Check Settings > Apps > Installed apps, Task Manager > Startup apps, and Task Scheduler before restoring anything.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components when other programs are also failing

SFC and DISM are not primary installers for the Visual FoxPro ODBC driver. Use them when you also see broader Windows problems, damaged system files, failed updates, or multiple unrelated applications failing.

Open an elevated Command Prompt:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run DISM first:

cmd
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:

cmd
sfc /scannow

  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Test the affected application again.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its System File Checker instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

SFC may repair protected Windows files, but it is not expected to restore a legacy third-party ODBC driver that was never installed. If both commands complete successfully and the FoxPro application still fails, return to the application installer and ODBC architecture checks.

When repeatedly hunting through Windows components and rerunning repairs makes it difficult to identify what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported system problems; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair is handled by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the FoxPro application remains the definitive fix when that application owns the missing driver.

Fix 6: Update the application and supporting drivers carefully

Visual FoxPro itself is retired, so Windows Update is unlikely to provide a modern replacement for the FoxPro ODBC driver. Check the application vendor for a current installer, compatibility update, or supported deployment method.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Check the application vendor’s support or download area for an updated installer.
  7. Confirm whether the vendor supports your Windows and Office architecture.

Device Manager is generally not the right place to repair vfpodbc.dll, because this is an application database driver rather than a hardware driver. Do not replace it with a generic display, chipset, or storage driver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are manually checking many machines for stale drivers and repeating updates without knowing what changed, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify reported driver updates; the free scan shows the findings, while installation is handled by the full version. It is optional and does not replace the FoxPro application installer or ODBC package.

Fix 7: Investigate a missing dependency

If vfpodbc.dll exists but Windows reports “specified module could not be found,” another required component may be absent or damaged.

Work through these checks:

  1. Repair or reinstall the application.
  2. Reinstall VFPODBC.MSI from trusted media.
  3. Confirm that the application and driver have matching 32-bit architecture.
  4. Review antivirus quarantine.
  5. Check whether the application was copied from another computer.
  6. Test the same installer on a supported, isolated workstation if the software is business-critical.
  7. Ask the application vendor for its complete dependency list.

Do not download individual dependency files from random DLL sites. A dependency can itself require other libraries, and an incorrect version may cause crashes or an “application was unable to start” error.

Why regsvr32 usually does not fix this file

regsvr32 is used for DLLs that expose a COM self-registration entry point. An ODBC driver is normally installed and registered by its MSI or application installer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Running this command is therefore not the normal repair:

regsvr32 vfpodbc.dll

A “module failed to load” result from regsvr32 does not prove that the driver is repaired. It may simply mean that the DLL is not a self-registering COM component or that one of its dependencies is missing.

Use the MSI or the original application installer instead. Only use regsvr32 when the application vendor’s documentation explicitly identifies a particular COM DLL that must be registered.

Windows Features and Device Manager

Windows Features does not normally provide the Visual FoxPro ODBC driver. Enabling unrelated legacy components can add complexity without installing vfpodbc.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Best Value

Likewise, Device Manager is useful for hardware drivers, not for repairing an ODBC database driver. Use it only if the same troubleshooting session has identified a separate hardware problem.

Do not copy the DLL into System32 or SysWOW64

Copying a loose vfpodbc.dll into a system directory can create several problems:

  • The version may not match the application.
  • The file may be 64-bit when the application needs 32-bit.
  • ODBC registration may still be absent.
  • Required dependencies may still be missing.
  • The file may contain malware or have been modified.
  • A later application repair may overwrite it.

There is no single universal path or “latest safe DLL” that applies to every Visual FoxPro installation. The correct source is the original application installer, trusted vendor media, or the historical Microsoft package identified for that application.

When the application is simply incompatible

Some old FoxPro programs depend on components that are no longer supported on current Windows releases. If repair and ODBC architecture checks do not resolve the issue:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Ask the vendor for a current installer or compatibility statement.
  2. Confirm whether the vendor supports 32-bit Office or a 32-bit Windows environment.
  3. Test the application with a copy of its data, not the only production database.
  4. Consider a supported virtual machine or isolated legacy workstation.
  5. Plan migration if the software is still business-critical.

Do not use a virtual machine as a reason to expose an unpatched legacy system to the internet. Keep old environments restricted, backed up, and managed according to your organization’s security policy.

FAQ

Is vfpodbc.dll part of Windows 11?

No. It is a legacy Microsoft Visual FoxPro ODBC driver component, not a normal Windows 11 system file. It may have been installed by an older application or database package.

Is vfpodbc.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?

The historical Microsoft Visual FoxPro ODBC driver is generally 32-bit. A 32-bit application should use C:WindowsSysWOW64odbcad32.exe on 64-bit Windows.

Can I download only vfpodbc.dll?

That is not recommended. Install or repair the application or the complete VFPODBC.MSI package instead. A loose DLL does not restore ODBC registration or dependencies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does the driver appear in one ODBC administrator but not the other?

Windows maintains separate 32-bit and 64-bit ODBC tools and registrations. The tool must match the architecture of the application calling the driver.

Will SFC restore the file?

Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows components. It is appropriate for broader Windows corruption, not as the primary installer for a legacy FoxPro ODBC driver.

Does the Visual FoxPro OLE DB Provider fix this error?

No. The OLE DB provider installs VfpOleDB.dll, which is a different technology and does not replace the Visual FoxPro ODBC driver.

Why does regsvr32 fail?

vfpodbc.dll is an ODBC driver, not ordinarily a self-registering COM DLL. Install it through its MSI or the original application installer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if the error started after antivirus cleanup?

Review protection history, confirm which application owned the file, and repair or reinstall that application. Do not restore an unknown DLL merely because its filename matches the error.

What is the most likely permanent fix?

Identify the program that needs FoxPro, reinstall or repair it from trusted media, and configure its DSN with the ODBC administrator matching the program’s architecture. If the program is no longer supported, obtain a vendor-approved installer or move it to a controlled legacy environment.
