The Video Game History Foundation (VGHF) opened early access to its digital library on January 30, 2025. Public digital materials are free to search and view, and no special credentials are required. The launch collection included more than 1,500 full-text searchable, out-of-print video game magazines, along with development and production materials, artwork, press kits, event guides, catalogs and other ephemera. Ars Technica’s launch-day coverage reported more than 30,000 indexed and curated files. Both figures describe the launch collection. The magazine count has grown since then, so treat them as a starting point rather than a current total.
What launched and what the numbers mean
The launch announcement and the launch-day reporting use different measures, so the figures are not interchangeable. The table below separates them.
| Figure | Value | Source | Scope and date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Out-of-print video game magazines, full-text searchable | More than 1,500 | VGHF launch announcement | Launch collection, January 30, 2025 |
| Indexed and curated files | More than 30,000 | Ars Technica launch-day reporting | Launch-era count, 2025; not a current total |
| Digitized magazines | More than 5,000 | VGHF news listing | Later milestone; the listing shown does not give a date |
The 1,500-magazine figure and the 5,000-magazine figure therefore describe two different points in the archive’s growth. Neither is a count of playable items, and neither tells you how many individual pages or issues each magazine contains. For the file count, Ars Technica offered examples rather than a full inventory: more than 100 hours of raw production files from the creation of the Myst series, and Sonic the Hedgehog concept art and design files contributed by artist Tom Payne.
How to search and browse the archive
VGHF separates its public digital holdings from its wider catalog. Use the steps below to find material and to check whether it can be used.
#1 Best Overall
- Open the Digital Archive portal from VGHF’s website. This is the search layer for digitized material.
- Run a full-text search using a game title, magazine name, publisher, developer or a specific term. Full-text search covers the text of the digitized items, not only their titles.
- Browse by collection when you want to see everything a donor or project contributed. Collections vary in scope and in their notes.
- Open the collection information before you rely on an item. The rights terms that matter for reuse are set there.
- If a title does not appear in the portal, search the Library Catalog. It is the broader index and can list materials that are not yet digitized or fully processed.
VGHF describes the portal as a permanent work in progress. Not every holding has been cataloged or digitized, so a missing result does not prove that VGHF has no relevant material.
Digital Archive versus Library Catalog
The two tools answer different questions. The comparison below covers the four points that determine what you can expect from each.
Rank #2
| Point of comparison | Digital Archive portal | Library Catalog |
|---|---|---|
| Digital availability | Digitized items you can open online | Includes materials not available digitally yet |
| Full-text search | Yes, across digitized text | Not stated for catalog-only holdings |
| Processing status | Processed, digitized holdings | Includes unprocessed holdings |
| Cost of access | Free for public digital items, according to VGHF’s launch announcement | Staff-mediated access to original or unprocessed materials is a paid service, offered at VGHF’s discretion |
| Reuse terms | Set by each collection’s notes | Set by each collection’s notes, where a collection is identified |
What the archive does not offer
The archive is a research collection, not a playable library. VGHF says it generally does not collect retail games and does not plan to give researchers playable copies. It cites U.S. copyright restrictions on digital access to out-of-print games as the reason. If you are looking for emulation or downloadable game files, this is not the place to find them.
The archive does, however, hold the material around the games: magazines, production files, artwork, press kits and promotional material. That is where its research value lies.

Using archive material in your own work
Free online access does not grant permission to republish. VGHF says that some special collections include donor permission for research reproduction. Unless a collection’s information says otherwise, VGHF does not own the intellectual property in its holdings and cannot give express permission to reproduce them.
The portal’s researcher agreement directs users to use materials for research or private study. That wording matters if you plan to publish an image, scan or excerpt in an article or video. Before reproducing anything:
- Read the collection information for the specific item, not only the portal’s general terms.
- Check whether the collection names donor permission for research reproduction.
- If the collection says nothing about reproduction, treat the item as needing permission from its rights holder, and do not assume that being online makes it reusable.
- Ask VGHF when a collection’s terms are unclear. Staff-mediated access to original materials is a separate, paid service.
What VGHF says about the library
Phil Salvador, VGHF librarian, wrote in the launch announcement: “Anyone studying video game history is a researcher, and we do not charge to view publicly accessible materials.” He also wrote: “The VGHF Library is free for anyone to access digitally, anywhere in the world.” The archive portal itself describes the project this way: “This library is a permanent work in progress.”
Those statements cover public digital access. They do not change the rules for reproduction or for original, unprocessed materials.

What is not yet established
The retrieved sources do not establish a current total for the archive’s files or magazines beyond the 5,000-magazine milestone, and they do not show how collection-level rights terms have changed since launch. Check the live portal and the collection information for current figures and for any item you intend to use.
