Start by reading the mission briefing, then build complementary forces, divide your front into manageable zones, and use the attack and defence estimates before committing troops. The announced launch package contains 11 historical missions from D-Day through Operation Varsity and two tutorial levels, with a campaign that expands your army through officers, historical divisions, custom formations, and requisition.
What kind of strategy game is Victory Battleplan?
Battleplan operates at the battlefield and corps level rather than asking you to run a nation-wide economy, diplomacy system, or production chain. Scenarios portray specific World War II battles, generally over about two weeks. Your important decisions are where formations go, which objectives receive priority, how much strength to commit to each sector, and when to alter a plan.

The scale changes how you should think. A single unit is not an isolated chess piece; nearby formations create support relationships, headquarters organize command, and terrain changes the value of an advance. A plan that looks powerful on an open map can fail if it stretches the line too thin, leaves a flank exposed, or sends tanks and infantry into terrain that cancels their advantages.
There is no single victory condition shared by every mission. At the beginning of each scenario, read the briefing and the currently listed objectives. One battle may emphasize ground, another a route, a timetable, a defensive position, or several conditions at once. Treat the mission’s own briefing as authoritative rather than assuming that capturing every province or destroying every opposing unit is always required.

Your first campaign decisions
Create an officer and corps
The campaign begins with a fictional officer and a fictional corps. Your country selection determines the starting division. The announced recruitment system can draw units from the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada, so the initial choice affects the force you have before later formations become available.
Before the first tutorial, you receive an infantry division containing infantry, anti-tank guns, artillery, engineers, anti-air guns, and several headquarters. A formation needs an officer-led headquarters, so do not treat headquarters as optional decoration when reorganizing your army.
Understand deployment weight
Every mission sets a total deployment weight. You cannot simply bring every formation you own. Restructuring units and recruiting new formations are campaign decisions constrained by that allowance, so compare the mission’s needs with the weight of the force you want to deploy. A powerful but expensive formation may leave less room for the engineers, artillery, scouts, or reserves that make an attack practical.

Completing missions earns requisition, which funds additional formations. Historical divisions and officers become recruitable after missions in which they appeared, while custom formations can also be created. Spend requisition to solve a capability gap—such as a lack of engineers, reconnaissance, or mobile reserve—rather than automatically buying the largest available formation.
How combined-arms support works
Different unit types within roughly one square kilometre can provide nearby friendly units with statistical support. The developer’s Combined Arms diary states that these bonuses do not stack, and a unit does not provide its own same-type bonus to itself. The practical rule is therefore to combine distinct roles, not to surround one unit with several copies of the same support provider.
The diary gives these example values. They are developer-published 2026 game figures and may change with patches.
| Unit or group | Nearby support effect or role | Beginner use |
|---|---|---|
| Infantry, mechanized infantry, and paratroopers | Infantry support: +20% defence and +30% morale. | Anchor ground, hold towns and woods, and accompany an advance so specialized units are not left exposed. |
| Light and medium tanks | Tank support: +25% damage and +30% morale. | Use with infantry where their mobility and firepower can exploit a breach. |
| Heavy tanks | Heavy-tank support: +50% damage, +10% defence, and +50% morale. | Reserve them for decisive sectors; their support is powerful but does not replace infantry or engineers. |
| Engineers | Mine immunity for friendly units, mine clearing, stronger fortification destruction, and improved entrenchment. | Lead difficult crossings, remove minefields, and make defensive positions harder to break. |
| Scouts and reconnaissance | Scout support increases nearby movement speed by 50%; reconnaissance can reveal spotted enemies beyond the frontline. | Use them to improve tempo and information, especially before committing armor. |
| Anti-tank guns and artillery | Support-gun benefits. Artillery also conducts long-range barrages. | Protect against armor and soften positions without immediately exposing the firing unit. |
| Headquarters | Provide support to nearby friendly units and host the officer required by a formation. | Keep them close enough to command but in a safer area where possible. |
Artillery barrages lose effect as enemies seek cover, so bombardment is not a guaranteed substitute for an assault. Use fire support to weaken a position, disrupt defenders, or help an attack reach a favorable local balance, then reassess the zone panel before ordering the advance.

Planning a battle with Regimental Plans
A Regimental Plan lets you draw an area of operations. Battleplan divides that area into zones based on the regiments assigned to it. You can place headquarters and support elements in a safer reserve area instead of forcing every unit into the front line.
Step 1: Read the objective before drawing
Identify what the briefing asks you to accomplish, where the objective lies, and whether time or a route matters. Mark the terrain between your force and that objective. A zone that is excellent for defence may be too slow for a timed attack; a direct route may cross wetlands or a minefield and require engineers.
Step 2: Draw a frontage you can actually support
Do not draw a broad area simply because the map allows it. Each zone must have enough troops to attack and then hold what it captures. If your force cannot cover the entire line, shorten the frontage or deliberately give up less important ground. Concentration creates a better local balance than a thin screen spread across every approach.
Step 3: Assign regiments and preserve a reserve
Allocate formations to the zones that matter most. Keep headquarters and selected support elements back when the frontline would expose them. A reserve can respond to a breakthrough, protect a depot or route, or reinforce a sector whose prediction changes after the battle starts.
Step 4: Choose the zone tactic
Seize Ground is the aggressive advance. Select it when taking the zone is worth the casualties, time, and exposure, and when your local force is strong enough to continue after the first line breaks.
Balanced Hold advances only when the developer-described conditions are favorable: the flanks are secure and your units are not outnumbered. It is the safer choice when you want progress without allowing a zone to outrun its neighboring formations.
Step 5: Inspect the prediction panels
The zone information panel estimates attack and defence outcomes using your allocated units and local enemy strength. It also shows participating divisions, soldier counts, elevation change, and difficult terrain. If the attack looks weak, add troops, bring a complementary support type, reduce the zone’s size, or choose a less ambitious tactic. If the defence estimate is poor, shorten the frontage or move the zone to better ground.

Step 6: Adjust during execution
Zone Orders are optional alongside the earlier Timeline orders. The developer describes them as another way to command troops, not a replacement that must be used in every scenario. During execution, watch whether a flank has opened, an enemy has reinforced a sector, or a captured zone has become difficult to hold. You can adjust zones as circumstances change instead of following an unsuitable initial division of the map.

Timeline orders and Zone Orders
Timeline orders express the sequence and timing of an operation. Zone Orders express what a regimental area should do and how its formations should behave within that area. Use the timeline when synchronization and sequence are the main problem; use zones when frontage, local force balance, and neighboring flanks need continuous attention.
“We have a new way of issuing orders – ZONE ORDERS. This is an OPTIONAL way of commanding your troops in addition to the previously described TIMELINE orders.” — Battleplan developer diary, Zone Orders, May 11, 2026.
Neither system removes the need to inspect the map. Orders are only as good as the assumptions behind them. A timeline built before an enemy counterattack, or a zone drawn before discovering a minefield, should be revised rather than obeyed for its own sake.
How to defend a position
Deploy on useful terrain
Position units during deployment because they gain fortifications when the mission starts. Towns and forests improve defence and firepower but reduce movement. Higher ground improves visibility and provides firepower and defence benefits. Swamps, wetlands, and beaches can impose broad penalties, so avoid making them the centre of a defence unless the mission or surrounding terrain leaves no better option.
Terrain is a trade-off, not a universal ranking. A forest may be ideal for holding an objective but slow a reserve moving toward a breakthrough. High ground is valuable for observation and firepower, yet an exposed ridge can become a target for artillery. Read the terrain effects alongside the objective and the likely direction of attack.
Build depth instead of one fragile line
Stationary units dig fortifications, while engineers can dig more effective ones. Fortifications improve defence and firepower, but combat wears them down; artillery and air attacks can damage them faster. Rotate or reinforce threatened positions rather than assuming the original entrenchment remains intact.
Minefields penalize units moving through them. Engineers can lay mines and clear them, making them useful both for slowing an enemy approach and for opening a route for your own attack. Keep a second position behind the first so a retreat does not become a collapse.
Keep a mobile reserve
Place reserves where they can answer a breakthrough, protect a depot or important route, and reinforce an objective that suddenly becomes decisive. A reserve parked too far behind the line may arrive after the enemy has already widened the breach; one placed on the frontline may be destroyed before it can respond. Scouts and reconnaissance help you identify where movement is needed, while headquarters keep the reserve connected to the formation it supports.

The defensive diary’s memorable warning—“Defending everything is the same as defending nothing”—is presented there humorously as “Sun Tzu, probably,” not as an authenticated quotation. Its practical lesson is to choose the ground and routes that matter most instead of dividing too few troops equally across an oversized front.
A beginner attack checklist
- Confirm the mission condition. Read every current objective and note any timing or route requirement.
- Find the decisive sector. Compare the objective, terrain, elevation, and enemy positions before assigning regiments.
- Draw a narrow enough zone. Reduce the frontage if the attack prediction shows that your units are outnumbered or poorly matched.
- Mix support types. Pair infantry with armor, engineers, scouts, artillery, or anti-tank guns according to the ground and opposing force; remember that identical support bonuses do not stack.
- Check the estimate. Review attack and defence predictions, soldier counts, participating divisions, elevation change, and difficult terrain.
- Secure the flanks. Use Balanced Hold when a controlled advance is appropriate; use Seize Ground only when the sector can absorb an aggressive push.
- Prepare the next position. Keep a reserve and a headquarters route so success in the first zone does not leave the captured ground undefended.
- Reassess while executing. Change zones or orders when enemy strength, terrain access, or a flank condition changes.
Common beginner mistakes and fixes
Spreading the army across the entire map
Symptom: every approach has a token unit, but no zone has enough strength to attack or hold.
Fix: give up less important ground, shorten the front, and concentrate a mixed force on the objective that controls the mission result.

Symptom: several identical units stand together but the expected support improvement does not appear.
Fix: add distinct nearby roles. Support bonuses do not stack, and a unit does not support itself with its own type.
Attacking without checking local balance
Symptom: a planned advance enters a zone with an unfavorable prediction or exposed flank.
Fix: allocate more troops, reduce the zone, add engineers or artillery where appropriate, or wait for a neighboring formation to secure the flank.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Fix: hold headquarters and selected support units in a safer reserve area while keeping them close enough to provide their nearby benefits.
Relying on fortifications forever
Symptom: a position that began strong collapses after sustained combat or bombardment.
Fix: expect fortifications to degrade, use engineers to improve positions, and prepare a secondary line and reserve.

Assuming every mission has the same objective
Symptom: you capture ground or pursue enemy units while the actual mission condition remains unmet.
Fix: return to the scenario briefing and current objective display. Battleplan’s official materials do not establish one universal win condition.
How campaign progression changes your decisions
The campaign is not only a sequence of battles; it is a growing force-management problem. Missions unlock historical divisions and officers associated with battles in which they appeared. Requisition from completed missions pays for further formations, while custom formations let you shape a force around your preferred operational needs.
Early on, the starting infantry division teaches the basic relationship between infantry, anti-tank guns, artillery, engineers, anti-air guns, and headquarters. Later, deployment weight forces harder choices. A formation that looks ideal in isolation may be less useful than two smaller formations that cover reconnaissance, mine clearance, anti-armor defence, and a reserve at the same time.
When planning a future mission, consider five questions:
- What does the briefing require, and how much time is available?
- Which local sector must be stronger than the others?
- What terrain penalties or elevation changes will shape the approach?
- Which complementary support roles are missing from the force?
- Can the chosen formations fit the mission’s deployment weight and your current requisition?
What is confirmed and what can change
The announced launch presentation from October 2, 2026 describes 11 historical missions from the D-Day landings through Operation Varsity and two tutorial levels. The campaign, unit support values, and command systems described in developer diaries are official announced features rather than the results of independent hands-on testing. Unit percentages, availability, and other details may change in patches, so use the current in-game briefing and tooltips if they differ from these figures.
The most durable beginner principles are operational: read the objective, concentrate strength locally, combine distinct unit roles, use terrain and depth on defence, protect headquarters and supply routes, and revise orders when the situation changes.
