What does aspect ratio mean?
Aspect ratio is the proportion of a video’s width to its height: in the University of Cambridge’s technical guidance, it is “the shape of your video – the width compared to the height.” Cambridge’s video technical guidance illustrates common shapes including 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, and 4:5.
- 16:9: wider than it is tall; a conventional landscape frame.
- 9:16: taller than it is wide; a full-height portrait frame.
- 1:1: a square frame.
- 4:5: a portrait rectangle, taller than square but less tall than 9:16.
Resolution is different: it gives the frame’s pixel dimensions. For example, 1920 × 1080 is a 16:9 frame, but the ratio alone does not tell you how much detail the video contains.
Which aspect ratio should you use?

These are practical starting points, not a guarantee that every service will display an upload identically. Device, interface, feed placement, and platform updates can affect how a frame appears. Cambridge recommends checking the current guidance for the platform before publishing.

How YouTube handles different frame shapes
YouTube identifies 16:9 as the standard aspect ratio for its computer player. The player also adjusts to match the size of an individual video and the viewer’s device. In some cases, including 9:16 videos in computer browsers, YouTube may add padding around the video. Its guidance advises creators not to bake padding or black bars into the file, because they can interfere with the player’s dynamic sizing. See YouTube’s video resolution and aspect-ratio guidance.

Those dimensions describe resolution; 16:9 describes shape. Choose each according to the delivery requirements rather than treating one as a substitute for the other.
Choose and prepare a frame without losing important content
- Identify the destination and placement. Decide whether the video is for a standard landscape player, a vertical short-video feed, or another layout. A platform may treat placements differently, so be specific.
- Choose the shape that fits that viewing context. Start with 16:9 for conventional landscape viewing or 9:16 for portrait-first viewing. Consider 1:1 or 4:5 when the target placement makes those frames appropriate.
- Check current platform guidance. Do this before recording or exporting, especially if you plan to reuse the video on multiple platforms. Specifications and presentation can vary and change.
- Frame for the chosen crop. Keep the important action and on-screen text visible in the version you intend to publish. If you need more than one aspect ratio, make deliberate reframed exports; an automatic conversion may cut off subjects or text.
- For YouTube, leave bars out of the video file. Do not add black bars or padding just to force a different shape; let the player adapt to the video dimensions.
When one video needs multiple aspect ratios
Repurposing a single edit for landscape and portrait destinations can work, but a simple crop may change the composition. A wide shot may place its subject near an edge that disappears in a tall crop; captions or interface graphics may also become hard to read. Review each export at its intended shape and placement, and reposition the subject or text when needed. The guidance available here does not establish a universal crop-safe margin, so do not rely on a fixed percentage as a rule.
