Choose a guide by the job you need done: use a walkthrough for a longer route, a focused guide for one boss or level, and a beginner route or tips when you are still learning the game. Before following any advice, check that it matches your game, platform, edition, and current version.

Choose the guide format that fits your problem

“Guide” and “walkthrough” cover several kinds of help. A full route can carry you through a longer section or the whole game; a focused guide is usually easier to use when you are stuck on one encounter, level, or collectible. Guide publishers distinguish these formats, along with beginner routes, tips, and shortcuts. GuideLVL’s guide categories illustrate the range.

What you need Format to look for What to check
Directions through a long sequence or the whole game Walkthrough That it covers your current chapter, route, and game version
Help with one boss, level, or other bounded obstacle Focused boss or level guide That the encounter and any relevant mechanics match your version
A low-spoiler starting point or help learning basic systems Beginner route or tips Whether the guide reveals later story or exploration details
A missing item or completion task Collectible guide or checklist That it covers the right area and distinguishes required items from optional ones

Check that the guide matches your game

A guide can be accurate for one release and out of date for another. Compare its game title, platform, edition, and version with the one you are playing; for patched games, look for a last-verified or updated date and any notes about patch changes. GuideLVL says it dates and rechecks guides after patches, but that publisher statement is not proof that every individual guide is correct. Check the guide page itself for its date and scope.

  • Confirm the exact game, including remaster, remake, or edition where relevant.
  • Check platform-specific differences if the game’s controls, content, or release differs by platform.
  • Look for a verification date or version note, then compare it with the game’s current update information.
  • If the advice does not match what you see in-game, stop and verify the guide rather than assuming you missed a step.

Decide whether an app or a printed guide is useful

Guide apps

Some guide apps combine text walkthroughs with interactive maps, collectible checklists, bookmarks, and offline reading. Gamer Guides describes these kinds of reader features on its app page. Treat feature lists and quantity claims as the publisher’s own descriptions, not independent measures of coverage. Before relying on an app, verify that it supports your device and the specific game guide you need; check current price and offline availability in the relevant app store.

Printed strategy guides

Printed strategy guides remain a distinct physical format, discussed in academic work on guides and walkthroughs in the DiGRA Digital Library. A book is most useful when it matches the exact game and edition you own. Check platform and release details before buying, especially where multiple versions differ. Without a named game, platform, and edition, there is no specific book to recommend.

Use a guide without losing your preferred play experience

If you want to explore on your own, open only the section that addresses your immediate obstacle rather than reading a full route in advance. For completion tasks, a checklist can help track what remains; for navigation, a map or bookmarked section may be quicker than searching through a long walkthrough. Decide how much spoiler detail you want before choosing a guide, since a complete route may reveal discoveries or story beats you would rather encounter yourself.

What a general guide recommendation can—and cannot—tell you

There is no single best walkthrough or app for every player. The right choice depends on the game and version, whether you need a full route or one solution, and whether maps, checklists, offline reading, or bookmarking matter to you. A guide’s format and feature list cannot establish that it will make a game easier or guarantee a particular outcome; for a specific recommendation, the game, platform, version, and problem need to be known.
