VILE: Exhumed did not reach its planned July 2025 Steam launch after the store page was removed. The game is now available as free shareware, and its creators announced a physical PC edition in August 2026. Valve and publisher DreadXP offered different accounts of how Steam’s rules applied; the dispute remains their competing characterization, not a confirmed finding that Valve admitted a mistake.
What happened to VILE: Exhumed on Steam?
Final Girl Games had planned to release VILE: Exhumed on Steam on July 22, 2025. PC Gamer reported that Steam removed the store page on July 25, before that launch. The game therefore did not arrive on Steam as planned. PC Gamer’s timeline and account and the Final Girl Games devlog document those dates.
Steam’s stated rationale, reported by Rock Paper Shotgun, concerned its rule against sexual depictions or images of real people. Valve told the outlet: “Steam has never allowed games with sexual depictions/images of real people”. Valve pointed to item two of its rules and guidelines onboarding document and said the rule was not new. Rock Paper Shotgun’s report, hosted in Steam News, quotes Valve’s explanation.
Why Valve and DreadXP disagreed
DreadXP, the publisher, disputed how the rule applied to this game. Its spokesperson told Rock Paper Shotgun: “Everything in the game is censored and implied, which is the opposite of ‘explicit’ as pointed out in the guidelines. The content of VILE: Exhumed falls within compliance of this rule referred to by Valve in their statement to RPS, which is why we called the ban as ‘unjust’.”

That is DreadXP’s argument, not an independent determination that the game complied with Steam’s rules. Valve’s statement described the platform’s rule; the accounts do not establish that Valve admitted an error. “Banned” is how the publisher and some coverage characterized the removal, while the directly reported event is that Steam took down the page before release.
What kind of game is VILE: Exhumed?
Final Girl Games describes VILE: Exhumed as a game about searching an old computer, uncovering dark secrets, and exploring parasocial obsession and misogyny. GameSpot describes the creators’ framing as an exploration of parasociality, entitlement, and misogyny in the digital age, using full-motion video and practical effects. Where can you get VILE: Exhumed?
After the Steam page was pulled, the creators released the game as free shareware under a Creative Commons license, with optional donations. Engadget and GameSpot reported the release on August 5, 2025. For the current official download or project information, start with Final Girl Games’ VILE devlog; availability and distribution details can change.
In the readme, as quoted by PC Gamer, creator Cara Cadaver wrote: “I am not sure if you just downloaded this from the website, maybe a friend sent you the zip file, who knows. Ultimately, I’m just glad you’re able to play it, that’s what matters.” PC Gamer’s report quotes the readme and discusses the shareware release.

The announced charity arrangement
Coverage in 2025 said that 50 percent of the game’s profits would go to Toronto’s Red Door Family Shelter, which supports families, refugees, and women escaping violence. This was an announced donation commitment; the cited coverage does not establish how much was ultimately transferred. Engadget’s August 5, 2025 report and GameSpot’s report describe the arrangement.
Is the physical PC edition available?
On August 5, 2026, Final Girl Games announced a physical PC edition as “coming soon” and directed interested readers to VILEISBANNED.COM to sign up for a notification. The announcement does not give a release date or price, identify what the edition contains or where it will be sold, or establish that it has shipped. Why is it called shareware?
The release is described as shareware because the creators made the game available to download without a required purchase and invited optional donations. The Creative Commons license is a separate part of the release: it governs the work’s permitted use under its stated terms. Free access does not by itself mean every use or redistribution is unrestricted, so consult the license information accompanying the download.
