Yes. In an interview published September 16, 2024, Vince Zampella confirmed that the then-untitled next Battlefield would return to a modern setting. IGN also revealed the first concept art, but the image did not identify a city or confirm the locations and combat scenarios it appeared to depict.
What Zampella confirmed about the setting
Zampella, identified by IGN as Head of Respawn & Group GM for EA Studios Organization, said the team wanted to return to the modern era associated with Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4. He described those games as a high point for the series:
“I mean, if you look back to the peak or the pinnacle of Battlefield, it’s that Battlefield 3… Battlefield 4 era where everything was modern. And I think we have to get back to the core of what Battlefield is and do that amazingly well, and then we’ll see where it goes from there.”
This was a statement about the team’s direction in September 2024, not a confirmation of every detail in the eventual game.

What the first concept art shows—and what it doesn’t
IGN’s reveal included the first concept art for the project. The article said EA declined to name the city depicted. It described the image as appearing to suggest a European coastal or urban location, helicopters, ship-to-ship combat and wildfires. Those are readings of concept art, not confirmed maps, mechanics or final-game features.
What he said about classes and Specialists
Zampella said the team intended to return to class-based play and that Specialists would not return at that time. His exact statement was: “Specialist will not be coming back.” These were plans described in the 2024 interview; the source does not establish the eventual shipped design.

He also said the team was testing what felt most fun rather than pursuing 128 players simply to reach that number. The interview discussed 128-player maps in Battlefield 2042 as design context, not as evidence of measured player preferences. Zampella said the team wanted dense, well-designed play spaces more like earlier Battlefield games.
What was known about development and timing
The interview reported that DICE, Motive, Ripple Effect and Criterion were working on the project. Zampella described broader ambitions for the Battlefield series but said the game itself had to work first.

EA was reportedly playtesting weekly and planning a community program for the following year. IGN said it was unclear whether that program would be a closed beta or another format. The interview did not announce a release date. These details reflect what was reported in September 2024; they do not verify the project’s release, platform, retail or program status as of October 2026.
