On Windows, that is typically VintageStoryServer.exe; on Linux you can run the .NET assembly with dotnet VintagestoryServer.dll or use the native VintagestoryServer binary. Put server files in a separate --dataPath, then use --ip, --port, --maxclients, --logPath, and the configuration flags as needed. Run the binary’s own --help and --version first: the installed build is authoritative, and the documented startup page is verified for Vintage Story 1.19.8.

Start with the installed build’s help output
Vintage Story’s startup parameters can change between releases. The Wiki’s startup-parameter reference explicitly advises opening the game directory and running VintageStoryServer.exe --help to list the arguments implemented by that particular build. Use the equivalent command for your Linux executable. Check the version at the same time with --version; the multiplayer setup documentation is verified for 1.20.0, while the startup-parameter page is verified for 1.19.8.

Minimal commands for each platform
Windows executable
From the directory containing the dedicated-server executable, a practical command is:

VintageStoryServer.exe --dataPath "C:VSDataMyServer" --port 42420 --maxclients 16The Windows line combines documented options as an example. Confirm the exact spelling and availability with that installation’s --help output. Quoting the path protects spaces and keeps the server’s saves, configuration, and logs in a deliberate location.
Linux with .NET
The documented .NET form is:
dotnet VintagestoryServer.dll --dataPath /srv/vintagestory/dataThis requires the runtime expected by the installed server package. Add network or capacity switches after the data path when your deployment needs them.

If your package includes the native executable, launch it directly:
./VintagestoryServer --dataPath /srv/vintagestory/dataMake the file executable and run it from the installation directory, or provide an absolute path. In every form, --dataPath is the important isolation setting when the game client and server share a computer.
What launch arguments control
Startup flags configure the process and its file locations, networking, capacity, and launch-time configuration. The following inventory reflects the documented options; defaults are the values listed by the startup reference, not a performance guarantee.

The archive figures are configuration defaults documented for the startup page, not measured limits on how many players your hardware can support. CPU, memory, world size, mods, network quality, and tick workload still determine a comfortable player count.

Keep server data separate with --dataPath
The data path holds the dedicated server’s saves, configuration, and operational files. Without an explicit location, it is easy to mix a server world with the client profile or to let two processes read the same settings. Choose a directory owned by the account that runs the service, back it up, and use the same path in every launch method.
- Windows example:
C:VSDataMyServer. - Linux example:
/srv/vintagestory/data. - For several worlds or instances, give each process a different data directory and port.
Changing --dataPath later makes the server appear empty because it is looking at a new directory. Stop the process, copy the existing data to the new location, check ownership and permissions, and then start with the new path.
Choose between --genconfig, --setconfig, and --withconfig
--genconfig: reset to a fresh file
Use --genconfig when you deliberately want a new default serverconfig.json. It exits after generation and warns that an existing configuration is deleted, so make a backup before running it. This is a reset tool, not a routine startup flag.
--setconfig: write persistent values
--setconfig changes or creates the configuration file. The reference shows JSON-like syntax:
VintageStoryServer.exe --setconfig="{ key: 3, foo:'value' }"Use the property names accepted by your build. Because this writes persistent configuration, review the generated file and record the command in your deployment notes.
--withconfig: apply a launch-only override
--withconfig supplies temporary values for the current launch. It is appropriate for a test instance, a maintenance run, or a service that injects environment-specific settings without rewriting the base file. A later launch without the override returns to the saved configuration.

Decide what belongs in startup flags versus server configuration
Use launch arguments for process-level concerns: executable diagnostics, data and log locations, bind address, port, client capacity, extra asset or mod directories, and temporary configuration overrides. Use the runtime command or JSON file for gameplay and access policy.
Runtime commands with /serverconfig
The command reference includes examples such as:
/serverconfig maxclients <number>
/serverconfig password <password>
/serverconfig advertise <true|false>
/serverconfig WhitelistMode <default|off|on>
/serverconfig maxchunkradius <number>These commands are convenient while the server is running. They cover settings such as password protection, advertising, whitelist mode, PvP, fire spread, entity spawning, tick rate, chunk radius, spawn point, and related world rules.

For repeatable administration, stop the server before editing serverconfig.json. The dedicated-server guide advises relaunching after file changes so the process reads the new values. Keep a dated backup, preserve valid JSON syntax, and change one group of settings at a time so a startup error is easy to identify.
Dedicated servers use whitelisting by default as of version 1.20, according to the dedicated-server guide. If you are upgrading from an older installation, inspect the effective whitelist setting rather than assuming the previous behavior remains.
Network binding, port forwarding, and player capacity
Binding an address
--ip overrides the configured bind address. Bind to the interface that should accept connections; an incorrect address can make the process start while remaining unreachable from the intended network. If you need local testing only, use the address appropriate to that interface and verify it with the server’s startup output.

Selecting a port
--port overrides the configured port, whose documented default is 42420. If you change it, update the firewall rule, router forwarding rule, and the address players use. Only one process can normally listen on a given IP-and-port combination, so separate instances require separate ports or addresses.

Limiting clients
--maxclients overrides the simultaneous-client limit; the startup reference lists 16 as the default. A higher number is a policy choice, not a guarantee that the machine can simulate that many players. Watch memory, tick stability, and log warnings after changing it.
Logs, assets, and mods
Set --logPath to an absolute directory when logs should live outside the data tree or on a separate disk. The archive controls prevent indefinite growth: the documented defaults retain five archived files and cap an archive at 1024 MB. Choose lower limits on a small disk and higher limits only when you have a retention plan.
--addOrigin adds an asset source, while --addModPath adds one or more mod directories. Keep custom content paths stable and readable by the service account. When a mod fails to load, first start without the extra path, then add paths back one at a time; this distinguishes a path or permission problem from an incompatible mod.
Keep the process running on Linux
The supplied server.sh wrapper
The Linux guide documents a lifecycle wrapper with commands including start, stop, status, update, restart, setup, and command. Use the wrapper when you want a documented script to own the process and provide consistent lifecycle actions. Confirm that its configured installation and data paths match the command you tested manually.
systemd
For a machine that should start the server at boot and restart it under a service policy, deploy it with systemd as described in the Linux guide. The unit should run under a dedicated account, use the intended working directory, include the tested executable and --dataPath, and write logs somewhere that the account can access. Test stop, start, status reporting, and a reboot before calling the deployment production-ready.
Direct process versus service manager

Windows dedicated mode versus opening a world to LAN
The official self-hosting guidance distinguishes an ad-hoc world opened to LAN from a dedicated server. LAN sharing is tied to a running game session. A dedicated server remains available by launching VintageStoryServer.exe from the installation path, independent of a player keeping the client open. Use the dedicated executable when the world must stay online or be managed as a service.

Managed hosting: what the provider is operating
A managed host is still operating the same layers: the Vintage Story server executable, a data directory, configuration files, network binding, logs, mods, and a lifecycle process. Before committing, verify that the provider exposes the arguments and files you need, supports your target Vintage Story version, allows backups and mod paths, and states how port changes, updates, restarts, and data export work. Do not assume a hosting panel supports every switch simply because the underlying executable does.
Troubleshooting launch failures
The command says an option is unknown
Run --help on the exact executable and remove flags that are not listed. Do not copy a command from a different release without checking it; the reference itself is version-specific.
The server starts with a new world
Compare the current --dataPath with the path used by the original instance. Stop the process, restore or copy the world into the intended directory, fix ownership, and restart with one consistent path.
Players cannot connect
- Confirm the process is listening on the selected
--ipand--port. - Allow that port through the host firewall and forward it on the router when connections originate from the internet.
- Check that another server is not already using the same address and port.
- Test locally first, then from the remote network, to separate binding problems from routing problems.
Configuration changes have no effect
Check whether a launch flag or --withconfig is overriding the file. For JSON edits, stop the server before editing and relaunch afterward. For a live change, use the corresponding /serverconfig command and verify the resulting value.
Logs fill the disk
Set an explicit --logPath, review the archive count and maximum size, and remove old archives only after preserving any records needed for diagnosis. The documented defaults are five archived files and 1024 MB per archive.
A repeatable deployment checklist
- Run
--versionand--helpfrom the installed server directory. - Create a dedicated data directory and choose an absolute log directory.
- Start once with
--dataPathand verify that the expected configuration and world files appear there. - Set the bind address, port, and client limit; open matching firewall and forwarding rules.
- Apply persistent behavior through
/serverconfigor a stopped-server edit ofserverconfig.json. - Add asset and mod paths one at a time, checking startup logs after each change.
- Choose direct launch,
server.sh, or systemd according to the required uptime. - Back up the data directory and test a stop, restart, and restore procedure before inviting players.
Version and default caveats
The startup-parameter page is verified for Vintage Story 1.19.8, the multiplayer setup page for 1.20.0, and the dedicated-server guide notes the version-1.20 default of whitelisting. Defaults and accepted syntax can change. Treat the installed executable’s --help and --version output as the final authority whenever you upgrade, move the server, or adopt a hosting panel.
