Most Vintage Story server failures have a finite cause: a version mismatch, blocked network path, invalid configuration, incompatible mod, damaged world data, or insufficient resources. Start by classifying the symptom, record the exact client and console messages, then test one layer at a time. This guide gives the checks, commands, and recovery order that avoid making a bad situation worse.

Start with a controlled diagnosis

Do not begin by deleting files or repeatedly restarting. A restart can hide the first error, and changing several settings at once makes it impossible to identify the fix. Write down the exact client message, the relevant lines from the server console, and the time the failure occurred. Note whether everyone is affected or only one player, whether the server process is running, and what changed immediately beforehand.

Classify the failure

  • Startup or runtime: the server closes, crashes, hangs during launch, or reports an exception.
  • Outside-network connection: local players can connect but people outside the home cannot, or nobody can reach the advertised address.
  • Whitelist or authentication: the server is reachable, but a particular player is rejected.
  • Mod loading: the failure began after installing, removing, or updating a mod.
  • World or save integrity: the server fails while loading a world, or the world breaks after a mod change.
  • Performance: players experience rubber-banding, delayed actions, long pauses, or a server that appears frozen.

Confirm that the process is really alive

Use the host’s process monitor and the server console rather than relying on the game window alone. The operational troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the container or server log, server-main.log, process status, and the server’s performance and client-list commands. A process can remain open while its game loop is stalled; in that case, check status, stats, and the client list before forcing a restart. Save the log around the first error, not only the final shutdown message.

Server will not start or stops immediately

Match client, server, and mod versions first

The client and server must run matching Vintage Story versions. After a game update, every server-side mod also needs a release that supports that game version. A client may still launch while the server fails, or the server may start but reject connections when protocol or asset versions differ.

  1. Record the exact game version shown by the client and the dedicated server executable.
  2. Update or roll back both sides to the same version before changing world files.
  3. Check each mod’s stated game-version support and dependencies.
  4. Restart and read the first mod-related error in server-main.log.

Third-party mods are a common cause of crashes and connection failures. If the error remains unclear, disable non-vanilla mods temporarily, confirm that a clean server starts, and then restore mods in small groups.

Read the first meaningful error, not the last cascade

Later messages often describe consequences of an earlier failure. Look for the first exception, missing dependency, failed asset load, permission denial, or malformed-file message. Check that the account running the server can read the game directory, write to the save and log directories, and execute the server binary. On a container or managed machine, inspect the service’s own logs as well as the application log; a container restart loop can otherwise look like a game crash.

Validate serverconfig.json safely

Most changes to serverconfig.json require a server restart. JSON is strict: comments, trailing commas, unmatched braces, and smart quotation marks can prevent startup. Make one change, save a backup of the previous file, and validate the syntax with a JSON-aware editor before restarting. If the server starts after restoring the old file, reapply settings one at a time so the faulty key is identifiable.

Friends cannot join from outside your home

Prove the server works on the local network

First connect from another computer on the same local network using the host’s private address. This separates a game or firewall problem from an Internet routing problem.

  1. Confirm the server is listening and that a local player can join.
  2. Allow VintagestoryServer.exe through the host operating system’s firewall on the network profiles you actually use.
  3. Have an outside player test only after the local test succeeds.

If local clients cannot connect, port forwarding will not fix the underlying server, firewall, version, or mod problem.

Use the correct port and destination

The commonly documented default Vintage Story server port is 42420. Treat it as a configuration value, not a guarantee: verify the port in the installed server configuration and confirm which protocol the release and deployment require. Depending on the version and setup, TCP, UDP, or both may be needed.

Create the router rule for the host’s current private IP address, not an address that may change after a reboot. Forward the configured external port to the same internal port on that machine. A rule aimed at an old DHCP address, a second computer, or the router’s own address will appear correct but never reach the server.

Choose UPnP, manual forwarding, or a VPN

The official self-hosting instructions document UPnP. In the server console, the documented command is:

/serverconfig upnp 1

This asks the server to create a route through the firewall and router. UPnP must be enabled and supported by the network equipment, and it may be disabled for security reasons. If it does not create a working route, configure a manual forwarding rule instead. The official troubleshooting guidance also identifies a VPN-based private network as an alternative to public port forwarding.

  • Manual forwarding: best when you control the router and want a predictable public endpoint.
  • UPnP: quickest to try, but dependent on router support and policy.
  • VPN private networking: useful when inbound forwarding is unavailable, though every player must join the same virtual network and accept its additional setup.

Rule out CGNAT and multiple routers

Some Internet providers place customers behind carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT), so the home router has no directly reachable public address. A second router, mesh system, or modem-router combination can create the same symptom through double NAT. Local tests may pass while all Internet connections fail. Check the address shown by the router against the public address visible from the Internet; if they differ in a way that indicates provider NAT, ask the provider for a public address or use a VPN/private-network solution. With two routers, forward the port through both devices or place the downstream router in the appropriate bridge or exposed-host arrangement according to the equipment documentation.

A player is rejected even though the server is reachable

When the connection reaches the server and only one account is refused, check whitelist and role settings before changing networking. Confirm the player’s name or account identifier exactly as the server expects, remove stale entries, and verify that the player has not been banned or assigned an inappropriate role. Configuration edits generally require a restart. Keep a copy of the original file and ensure the JSON remains valid after editing.

Ask the affected player to confirm that their client version matches the server and that their required client-side mods match the server’s mod set. A successful network handshake does not prove that the content versions are compatible.

Mods cause crashes, join failures, or startup errors

Install server mods in the configured location

Place each server mod ZIP in the server’s configured Mods directory. Do not assume that a client-only mod belongs on the dedicated server. Confirm every dependency, check the mod’s supported Vintage Story version, and restart after manual file changes. Read the log for a missing dependency, duplicate file, incompatible API, or failed asset load.

Isolate a large mod list methodically

  1. Stop the server and make a complete backup of the world and configuration.
  2. Disable all non-vanilla mods while leaving the game’s built-in mods intact.
  3. Start the server and test the affected action: launch, world load, or player join.
  4. If the clean setup works, restore mods in small groups, restarting and testing after each group.
  5. When a group fails, halve that group until the offending mod or dependency is isolated.

This binary-search approach is faster and safer than repeatedly adding random files. A mod that appears harmless at startup can still fail when a particular block, item, entity, or saved chunk is loaded.

The world broke after removing or updating a mod

Stop experimentation immediately. Removing a mod can leave saved blocks, entities, recipes, or mappings that the world still references. Updating it can change those identifiers. Continuing to launch and save may overwrite the only recoverable state.

Preserve the original save

  1. Stop the server cleanly if it still responds.
  2. Copy the entire save directory, including its metadata, to separate storage.
  3. Label the copy with the date, game version, mod list, and the change that preceded the failure.
  4. Work only on a duplicate while testing recovery.

For a planned repair, force a save and create a backup with the operational commands:

autosavenow
genbackup

Command names and permissions can vary by server version, so confirm that the command completed successfully in the console. The dedicated-server guidance recommends copying a save while the server is stopped; that is the safest method for a full filesystem backup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restore before attempting mapping repair

The preferred recovery is a known-good backup made before the mod removal or update. If no usable backup exists, an administrator may consider a version-appropriate mapping repair command such as:

fixmapping applyall

Availability and behavior vary by Vintage Story version. Run it only on a duplicate after preserving the original. A mapping repair is not a substitute for restoring a backup and may not recover data that a removed mod owned or generated.

Lag, freezes, and delayed actions

Distinguish a pause from a dead server

Autosave can produce a short lag pause. A server with many mods can also need substantially more memory than a vanilla installation. Before restarting during a suspected freeze, use the status, stats, and client-list commands recommended by the operational guidance. If the process reports active clients and changing statistics, wait through a brief save pause; if the process is unresponsive and logs stop advancing, capture the evidence and then restart.

Separate client and server workloads

Running a dedicated local server can give the server and the game client separate memory space. That separation may help when extreme client settings and server simulation compete for the same resources. It does not create additional physical memory: monitor available RAM, CPU utilization, storage latency, and network stability on the host.

Reduce avoidable load

  • Remove mods that are not needed for the current world; every mod adds memory requirements, and some add substantially more.
  • Close unrelated applications on a constrained host.
  • Move the dedicated server to another machine when the player computer cannot provide stable resources for both processes.
  • Use a managed host when the limiting factor is hardware, uptime, maintenance, or reliable Internet reachability rather than game configuration.

There is no defensible universal “normal” tick rate or player-capacity number for every Vintage Story world. Entity counts, world activity, mods, hardware, and network conditions vary, so avoid treating an online benchmark as a guarantee for your installation.

Backups and maintenance that prevent repeat failures

Backups are part of troubleshooting, not an optional final step. Before a planned shutdown, update, mod change, or repair:

  1. Warn players and stop new activity.
  2. Force a save with autosavenow and verify the console response.
  3. Create a server backup with genbackup, then stop the server.
  4. Copy the complete save while the server is stopped, as recommended by the dedicated-server documentation.
  5. Store at least one copy on separate storage and retain a pre-update or pre-mod-change copy.

Periodically test that an archived backup can be opened on a separate test instance. A file that exists but cannot be restored is not a dependable backup. Keep a short change log containing the server version, mod versions, configuration edits, and backup location; it turns the next incident into a reversible procedure instead of guesswork.

Self-hosting, managed hosting, or a private VPN?

Self-hosting is practical when one administrator controls the machine, firewall, router, updates, and backups. Monthly managed hosting is an alternative when those responsibilities are the actual source of downtime. A VPN-based private network can solve inbound-connectivity problems without exposing a public game port, but it adds a network setup step for every player.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Option Inbound connectivity Cost pattern Control over files and mods Backup and maintenance Latency and support
Self-hosted at home Depends on firewall, forwarding, public address, and router topology Existing hardware and Internet connection; no separate hosting fee stated Full control You must automate and verify backups, updates, and recovery Usually favorable for nearby players; support is your responsibility
Managed hosting Provider handles the public endpoint Recurring monthly charge; amount depends on provider and plan Check supported Vintage Story version, mod workflow, and file access May include backup tools and monitoring; verify retention and restore process Choose a region near players; support quality varies
VPN private network Avoids many inbound-forwarding and CGNAT problems Depends on the VPN service; no universal price established Server files remain under your control You still manage saves and updates Can add routing overhead; every player needs VPN access and support is split between the VPN and server administrator

When comparing providers or approaches, verify the supported game version, mod installation workflow, backup controls, restore access, geographic location, uptime expectations, and who handles troubleshooting. Do not choose solely on advertised storage or CPU labels; the ability to restore a world and obtain help during an outage matters more.

A compact decision path

  1. Is the process running? If no, inspect the first startup error, versions, dependencies, permissions, and JSON syntax.
  2. Can a local player join? If no, fix the server, firewall, version, or mod problem before touching the router.
  3. Can only outside players not join? Check port 42420 or the configured port, protocol, forwarding destination, CGNAT, and multiple routers.
  4. Is one player rejected? Check whitelist, roles, bans, and that player’s version and required mods.
  5. Did the problem follow a mod change? Restore the pre-change backup, then isolate mods with a clean test and small groups.
  6. Is the server slow or apparently frozen? Check status, stats, client list, autosave timing, memory, CPU, storage, and mod load before restarting.

This order preserves evidence, prevents unnecessary world damage, and keeps network troubleshooting separate from save repair.

What not to do during an incident

  • Do not delete the world or overwrite the only backup while testing a mod fix.
  • Do not forward a port to a changing private IP and assume the router will follow the host.
  • Do not edit JSON with comments or trailing commas.
  • Do not add or remove several mods without recording the exact change set.
  • Do not treat a running process window as proof that the game loop is healthy.
  • Do not promise a performance number based on another machine, world, or mod list; no reliable universal failure-rate or benchmark statistic establishes one.

Final troubleshooting checklist

  • Exact client message, console output, and failure time recorded.
  • Client and server versions confirmed identical.
  • Mod versions, dependencies, and game-version support checked.
  • Server process, server-main.log, status, stats, and client list reviewed.
  • Local connection tested before Internet access.
  • VintagestoryServer.exe allowed through the host firewall.
  • Configured port verified; default 42420 checked against the installed setup.
  • Router forwards the right protocol and private host; CGNAT and double NAT considered.
  • Whitelist, roles, bans, and strict JSON syntax checked.
  • Save preserved before any mod removal, mapping repair, or destructive test.
  • Backups stored separately and a restore path known.
