You can raise money with a YouTube Live event by choosing a format people can take part in, giving them a clear donation route, and explaining exactly where their money goes. If your channel and chosen nonprofit qualify, YouTube Giving lets viewers donate on the watch page or through Live Chat Donations. If they do not, you can link to a genuine external fundraiser or make a clearly explained pledge to donate your own video revenue.
Virtual fundraiser ideas that work on YouTube Live
These are formats to adapt to your cause and community, not a ranking of which raises the most. YouTube does not publish comparative results showing that one livestream format reliably raises more than another.
Creator collaboration stream
Invite creators, community organizers, or partner groups to take part in one program. If YouTube Giving is available to your channel and the participating organizations, YouTube supports community fundraisers involving multiple creators. Agree in advance who will host, who will explain the cause, and how viewers will find the donation button.
Live performance or demonstration
Build the stream around original music, art, cooking, crafts, gaming, or another demonstration suited to your audience. Use material you created or have permission to use: YouTube warns that another creator’s work can trigger copyright claims. A performance can attract attention, but make the nonprofit and donation route clear rather than assuming viewers will infer them.

Expert conversation and audience Q&A
Bring on a nonprofit representative, advocate, or subject expert to explain the need and answer questions. Gather questions in chat, and put the organization’s name and donation instructions in the event description as well as stating them aloud during the stream.
Timed community challenge
Set a specific duration and a goal viewers can follow, such as completing a community activity or reaching a progress milestone together. YouTube’s fundraiser setup allows creators to set a goal and duration. Describe a matching gift only if it has actually been secured, and explain any conditions accurately.
Multi-channel community fundraiser
If available to your channel, a shared YouTube Giving campaign can let other creators support the same cause. Coordinate the message and event details so viewers hear a consistent explanation of the organization and how donations work.

Creator revenue pledge
You can pledge to donate revenue generated by your own original video, but say how you will calculate and document the amount. YouTube prohibits misleading donation claims and discourages attempts to raise revenue by asking viewers to click ads or repeatedly watch content.
Choose a donation route
The right route depends first on eligibility, then on whether you want donations to happen inside YouTube or on an external page.

YouTube says 100% of a contribution made through YouTube Giving goes to the eligible nonprofit and YouTube pays transaction fees. Google uses Network for Good to collect and distribute donations; YouTube says Network for Good has legal control of funds after they are collected. Check YouTube Giving eligibility before announcing the event
YouTube’s published channel criteria include an available location, at least 10,000 subscribers, membership in the YouTube Partner Program, and a channel that is not designated Made for Kids. The nonprofit must also meet YouTube’s requirements and be available to select. Location availability and eligibility lists can change, so verify them in YouTube Giving FAQs before promoting an on-platform Donate button.
Do not treat the subscriber threshold as the only test: channel status, location, audience designation, and the chosen nonprofit matter too. If you are not eligible, use a clearly identified external campaign instead of implying that a YouTube Giving button will appear.

- Confirm channel and nonprofit eligibility. Check location, subscriber count, YouTube Partner Program status, channel audience designation, and whether the intended organization appears as an available nonprofit.
- Create the campaign in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s setup guidance directs creators to Earn → Giving. Create a fundraiser, choose an available nonprofit, add its details and any collaborators, and optionally set a goal and duration.
- Attach the fundraiser to the event. Add videos or scheduled livestreams to the fundraiser, then publish. The Donate button appears after the fundraiser’s start date; do not promise viewers that it will be visible before then.
- Decide whether live chat is part of the experience. With live chat enabled, viewers can use Live Chat Donations. YouTube says donations replace Super Chat for Good, and Super Chat and Super Stickers are unavailable on donation livestreams to avoid confusion. Members-only live chat with a Donate button is not supported. Ads are not affected, while Super Thanks is unavailable on videos with donations.
- Check the viewer experience on mobile. YouTube says viewers need portrait orientation to see live chat on mobile. When chat is enabled, the Donate control appears in chat; without chat, a Donate button can appear next to or below the stream.
- Test the full message and destination. Check the event description, pinned or spoken instructions, fundraiser details, and any external link. Name the organization and tell viewers whether they are donating through YouTube or leaving YouTube for another provider.

If YouTube Giving is unavailable
You can still host a fundraiser without an on-platform Donate button, but make the alternative route explicit. YouTube suggests linking to an external fundraiser such as GoFundMe or JustGiving from an end screen. Eligible YouTube Nonprofit Program partners can also use Link Anywhere cards to send viewers to an external campaign landing page.
- Use the official campaign page and check the link before the event and during the stream.
- Say plainly that donations happen on an external site, not through YouTube Giving.
- Check the external provider’s current country availability, accepted payment methods, and fees; these details are not established by YouTube’s general guidance.
- If you are pledging your own video revenue instead, identify the nonprofit, describe how you will calculate the donation, and avoid claims that YouTube verifies the pledge.

Equipment: choose a stream method, not a shopping list
Special equipment is not a fundraising requirement. YouTube supports mobile, webcam, and encoder livestream methods. The computer-webcam route needs a webcam; an encoder workflow may use a camera and microphone depending on the show. Keep a YouTube channel running between events

Common problems and fixes
The Donate button is missing
Check that the fundraiser has started, is attached to the scheduled livestream, and that the channel and selected nonprofit qualify. If relying on live chat, confirm it is enabled; viewers on mobile need portrait orientation to see chat.
Viewers cannot use Super Chat or Super Stickers
This is expected on donation livestreams: YouTube disables Super Chat and Super Stickers to avoid mixing those paid features with Live Chat Donations. Explain which donation route viewers should use instead.
The donation route sends viewers to the wrong place
Open the destination yourself before the event, verify the organization and campaign, and check any end screen or card link. If it is an external campaign, tell viewers they will leave YouTube to donate.

A performance is affected by a copyright claim
Use original or authorized material and replace or remove content you do not have permission to use. Do not assume a charity event automatically grants rights to music, video, or other creators’ work.
Viewers are confused about where the money goes
State whether donations go through YouTube Giving, an external provider, or a creator’s revenue pledge. Name the nonprofit and avoid presenting a personal pledge as a platform-verified donation.
