What changing class does
Square Enix says characters change classes using Elemental Vessels, gaining access to different weapon types, abilities, and outfits. The vessels also have effects that can be used directly in combat, including a whirlwind, an area that slows time, and a protective boulder dome. The publisher describes these as system features, but does not provide a complete class-by-class breakdown on the cited feature page.

Class choice is therefore best approached as a change in combat style and utility, rather than as a simple power ranking. Your preferred weapon feel and the role you want a character to play are useful starting points.
Val: choose a combat approach, not a claimed “best” class
Square Enix’s official combat feature says: “For example, depending on his equipped class, protagonist Val can go in for pure aggression with a two-handed great sword, or take a more defensive role with a lance and shield combo.” This is a publisher illustration of contrasting roles, not evidence that either setup deals more damage overall or performs better against a particular boss. Those descriptions are qualitative. The cited page does not give damage figures, difficulty comparisons, or a build ranking, so it cannot establish a single best class for Val.
Confirmed Val weapon and class examples
Square Enix’s demo-reward support page ties two weapons to specific Val class examples. It says the weapons become usable as their associated classes unlock in the full game; it does not establish the complete unlock order or identify these weapons as optimal choices.

The official game overview lists six characters: Val, Hinna, Careena, Morley, Palamena, and Julei. The pages cited here do not provide a complete roster-by-roster class list or explain each character’s class-specific weapons, abilities, or roles. How to choose a class with the available information
- Pick the role you want. For Val, the official examples contrast aggression with a great sword and defense with a lance and shield.
- Consider the weapon feel. Weapon type is one of the changes Square Enix explicitly associates with changing class.
- Factor in utility. Elemental Vessels can provide combat effects such as a whirlwind, time-slowing area, or protective dome, so consider the effect you want available alongside your character’s fighting style.
- Check weapon compatibility. For the confirmed Val examples, the Falx is tied to his wind class and the Horn Lance to his moon class. The support page does not say these are best-in-slot weapons.
- Choose around your party approach. The official material supports role variety, but does not compare class damage, survivability, difficulty, or boss performance. Treat a personal preference as a preference, not a proven optimum.
What is not established by the available official guides
The official pages cited here do not establish a complete class tree, unlock conditions or sequence, every character’s class options, class-by-class ability lists, skill-tree details, or evidence-based build rankings. They also do not publish comparative performance data. As a result, an exhaustive class tier list or exact build recommendation cannot be supported by these sources. The reliable starting point is the role distinction Square Enix explicitly makes for Val, plus the specific weapon compatibility examples on its support page.
