Visions of Mana is a 2024 action RPG whose strongest appeal is the combination of broad, inviting exploration with flexible Elemental-powered combat. Its pilgrimage premise and traditional fantasy feel give the adventure a clear identity, but reviews diverge on whether the story and pacing live up to that world. It is most compelling for players who want a colorful action RPG with room to explore and customize, rather than a technically demanding combat game or an unusually ambitious narrative.
What is Visions of Mana?
Released on 29 August 2024, Visions of Mana is a mainline entry in Square Enix’s Mana series for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Square Enix describes it as the first mainline Mana installment in more than 15 years; that is the publisher’s characterization of the series gap. The official page lists PlayStation, Xbox, Windows, and Steam availability, though storefront listings can vary by region. Square Enix’s release announcement has the launch details.
What is the story about?
The adventure begins in Tianeea, the Fire Village, where people await the Faerie’s arrival and the naming of an alm. According to the official game description, alms are chosen every four years to travel to the Tree of Mana and rejuvenate mana by offering their souls. Val, a newly appointed soul guard, accompanies his childhood friend Hinna after she is selected as the Alm of Fire. The journey also brings in Careena, Morley, Palamena, and Julei. That setup establishes a personal reason for the pilgrimage without giving away later developments.
How does the combat and exploration work?
The game uses a semi-open 3D field, near-seamless transitions, and action battles. Elemental powers are central to both fighting and getting around; Square Enix’s January 2024 feature also highlighted aerial combat and Elementals that take the form of specialized weapons. Exploration leads through broad outdoor spaces and more traditional dungeons, giving the game a different rhythm from a sequence of tightly connected arenas.

PC Gamer praised the way the game adapts older 2D-style exploration into wide fields and classical dungeons, and found battles engaging even though they lack the deep combos and precise dodging of more technical action games. TechRadar similarly described the combat as straightforward combos and magic enhanced by a class system that adds customization. In practice, the draw is not mastering an especially intricate action-combat toolkit; it is combining accessible fights with the freedom to explore and alter how characters play.
Is the story good?
Critical opinion is mixed, especially on storytelling and pacing. PC Gamer’s review emphasizes the exploration and how combat fits into the broader adventure. TechRadar sees promise in the class system but argues that stiff movement and a story that does not fully reach its potential hold the experience back. GameSpot’s review is more negative about the story and pacing. These are different reviewers’ assessments, not a single settled consensus.

If you value a clear fantasy premise, a colorful world, and an adventure that leaves room to roam, the story’s traditional setup may be enough to carry you. If sharp pacing or unusually ambitious writing is your main reason to play an RPG, the divided reviews suggest a more cautious recommendation.
How does it perform?
TechRadar reported that PS5 performance mode ran smoothly at 60 fps on most occasions in its review, with occasional dips in busier areas or encounters. That observation applies to the PS5 build the reviewer tested; it is not a measurement of other platforms or a guarantee about the game’s current patched state. The cited reviews do not establish a comparable performance picture across every version.

What platforms is Visions of Mana on?
Square Enix lists PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and PC versions. For a purchase, check the listing for your platform and region rather than assuming every storefront carries the same edition. The relevant product is Visions of Mana itself; its availability and listing details depend on the retailer.
Is there a collector’s edition?
The Square Enix Store’s collector’s-edition listing describes a hardcover art book and a five-CD soundtrack. It also says the original soundtrack was planned for separate sale later, but current stock, pricing, and standalone soundtrack availability are not established here. Treat this as edition information, not a reason to expect a particular item to remain available.

Is Visions of Mana worth playing?
Visions of Mana is a good fit if you want a traditional-feeling fantasy action RPG with semi-open exploration, Elemental abilities, and character customization. Its appeal is less certain if you expect deeply technical combat or a consistently strong, tightly paced story. That recommendation reflects the differing assessments in reviews from PC Gamer, TechRadar, and GameSpot, rather than a guarantee of how every player will respond.
