Animal Crossing: New Horizons vs. Cozy Multiplayer Games on Steam

New Horizons is a Switch island-life game, not a Steam title. See how its local and online play works, and what to verify before choosing a cozy Steam alternative.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a Nintendo Switch game built around a self-paced island routine and visits with friends; it is not available on Steam. Steam, by contrast, is a storefront with separate cozy games, including Stardew Valley and Palia. Choose Animal Crossing for its island-life loop and Nintendo-specific shared play; compare Steam alternatives individually, since their multiplayer setups are not interchangeable.

What kind of play does each option offer?

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Nintendo describes New Horizons as a deserted-island life simulation. Its activities include gardening, fishing, decorating, catching insects, collecting fossils, and getting to know animal residents. The rhythm is deliberately self-paced rather than organized around a single shared objective. The game launched for Nintendo Switch on March 20, 2020. Nintendo’s official game listing

Cozy games on Steam

Stardew Valley and Palia are distinct games listed on Steam, not Steam versions of Animal Crossing. Their current multiplayer features, platform compatibility, and costs are not established here, so a comparison of specific co-op modes or gameplay loops would be misleading. Check each game’s current listing and developer information before choosing it for a particular group.

How multiplayer works in New Horizons

Play setup Group size and requirements
One Switch system Up to four simultaneous players on the same island using one system and one game.
Local wireless Up to eight players; each player needs a system and a copy of the game.
Online play Up to eight players on the standard edition; each player needs a system and game, plus internet access, a Nintendo Account, and Nintendo Switch Online.
Online, Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Up to 12 players when all participants own that edition. Nintendo also describes Slumber Island sessions for up to eight players, or up to 12 when everyone has the Switch 2 Edition.

Nintendo’s multiplayer instructions and save-data and multiplayer FAQ distinguish same-system play from local wireless and online sessions. The 12-player figure is edition- and mode-specific; it should not be treated as the cap for every version or session.

What to consider when sharing a Switch

A Switch system can have only one island for New Horizons, regardless of how many user profiles or game copies are on that console. Up to eight players may live on that island, but certain progression tasks belong to its Resident Representative. That makes household expectations important: separate user profiles do not create separate islands on a shared system. Nintendo explains these limits in its support FAQ.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose New Horizons if you want Nintendo Switch island life, gradual decorating and collecting, and the option to host friends under its defined local or online setups.
  • Look at Steam alternatives if your group plays on computers or wants a game sold through Steam. Evaluate Stardew Valley and Palia separately: confirm the current co-op modes, group size, supported platforms, and any cross-play before buying or planning a session.
  • Check the household setup first if multiple people share one Switch and expect independent islands; the console limit means they will share a single island.

For access and cost, confirm current regional listings and requirements directly. The Nintendo listing identifies the Switch game and notes that online features require a Nintendo Switch Online membership sold separately; prices and Steam alternatives’ current terms can vary and are not specified here.
