If VLC stops sending video to YouTube Live when your Mac’s display turns off, first check whether the Mac itself is entering system sleep. A dark screen does not prove the computer is asleep. Run a short test with the Mac kept awake while the display is allowed to turn off, then compare VLC’s local output with YouTube Live Control Room’s preview and stream-health messages. That separates a display symptom from a stream interruption; it does not assume a VLC setting is the cause.
First distinguish display sleep from Mac sleep
The display turning off and the whole Mac entering system sleep are different states. Apple documents a playback-related property called preventsDisplaySleepDuringVideoPlayback; its default is false on macOS. That describes the property, not VLC’s behavior, and it does not establish why a YouTube feed stopped. Other apps or frameworks can also affect display sleep. See Apple’s AVFoundation documentation.
Record the macOS version, Mac model, VLC version, whether the Mac is on battery or connected to power, and the time the display goes dark. Observe whether the Mac appears to sleep or only turns off its display. A black screen alone is not enough to tell.
Run a controlled test
- Start a short test broadcast, preferably unlisted, and open YouTube Live Control Room before the test.
- Keep the Mac from entering system sleep for the test, while allowing the display to turn off if your macOS configuration permits it. Change one condition at a time.
- When the display goes dark, check YouTube’s preview and stream-health messages. If possible, also view the broadcast from another device.
- Compare the result: if YouTube’s incoming preview remains healthy, the dark local display may be a rendering or display-only symptom. If incoming video stops, investigate the host’s sleep state, VLC playback and output, network, and YouTube ingest.
System Settings labels and available power options vary by macOS release, so use the settings available on your installed version rather than relying on a single version-specific path. This is a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed VLC fix. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring the incoming stream; see its live-streaming tips and stream troubleshooting guidance.

Use YouTube’s preview and health messages to locate the failure
For encoder-based streaming, software or hardware on the sender side supplies the feed to YouTube. If the Mac sleeps, test the Mac and encoder path before treating the dark display as a YouTube setting problem. YouTube’s guidance does not promise that VLC will continue sending when macOS sleeps; the preview test helps identify which side needs attention.
- Local display is dark; YouTube preview and health remain normal: Check the public or unlisted stream from another device. The evidence points away from a confirmed ingest failure, but does not by itself explain the local display.
- YouTube preview shows video stopped or health messages appear at the failure time: Check whether the Mac slept, whether VLC’s source is still playing, whether VLC is still outputting, and whether the network connection dropped.
- Mac demonstrably stays awake, but YouTube still loses video: Record the source type, VLC version, macOS version, output configuration, and the exact YouTube health message. YouTube describes an encoder as the software or tool that captures and compresses the feed; for software-specific faults, consult that software’s support channel. Its encoder setup guidance explains the stream URL and stream key workflow.
Check VLC, stream setup, and quality if the Mac stays awake
Confirm that VLC’s source continues playing and that the configured output is still active after the display turns off. Check for an error or disconnect in VLC and note whether local playback continues. Then review YouTube’s stream-health messages rather than changing multiple encoder settings at once.

YouTube’s encoder setup uses a stream URL and stream key; treat the key like a password and do not share it. Match encoder settings to the actual codec, resolution, frame rate, and available upload bandwidth. YouTube’s recommended encoder settings include H.264, H.265, and AV1 options and bitrate guidance by format, so there is no single bitrate appropriate to every stream. Test with the intended audio and video before relying on the broadcast.
VideoLAN’s Mac download page listed VLC 3.0.23 as the universal macOS download in information accessed on October 3, 2026; the current version can change, so compare your installed version with the official VLC for macOS download page. An update may be sensible for general compatibility, but no available evidence establishes that this version fixes display-sleep interruptions.

Why a VLC sleep preference is not a proven fix
Do not assume a current VLC preference controls this symptom. A 2019 VideoLAN development patch proposed removing macOS interface sleep-inhibition code. It is historical development evidence only: it does not establish how a current VLC release behaves or identify a setting that will restore a YouTube feed. See the 2019 VideoLAN mailing-list patch.
Alternatives if the Mac must not be the always-on host
The first step is still the controlled sleep test; ordinary system sleep does not make replacement hardware necessary. If your workflow must continue without a computer doing the encoding, YouTube lists standalone encoder hardware such as the AJA HELO Plus. Check that any device supports your source, input, stream format, monitoring, and recording needs before buying; its listing does not establish compatibility with your particular setup. YouTube also notes optional scheduled pre-recorded media functionality for this device in its encoder directory.
