Not verified. YouTube accepts live video from an encoder using a stream URL and stream key, but the available documentation does not confirm that current VLC releases can send a compatible feed to YouTube and automatically switch videos on a time-of-day schedule. YouTube’s scheduled-stream feature schedules the live event—not which video the encoder sends.
Two separate capabilities have to work
The question combines two jobs: sending a live feed to YouTube and choosing different video sources at set times. YouTube documents the first part as an encoder workflow. Its guidance does not establish that VLC supports the required current ingest protocol or that it can schedule source changes.
- Live ingest: YouTube instructs creators to connect an encoder using the stream URL and stream key. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its encrypted extension to RTMP. That guidance does not by itself confirm VLC compatibility.
- Timed switching: YouTube’s scheduling feature creates a live event and watch-page workflow. Its instructions still have the operator connect the encoder and start the stream; they do not describe changing the video inside the encoder at specified times.
So a scheduled YouTube event is not evidence that VLC can switch from one video to another on a timetable. VLC’s current capabilities for both RTMPS ingest and time-triggered source changes remain unverified here. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance and encoder setup instructions explain YouTube’s side of the connection, not those VLC features.
What YouTube’s documented encoder workflow does
- Create or schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a live stream.
- Get the ingest details. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS; use the URL it provides rather than assuming an address.
- Configure the encoder. Enter the URL and key in the encoder. The key identifies where the encoder sends its feed and lets YouTube accept it.
- Start and check the feed. Start the encoder, inspect the YouTube preview, and use Live Control Room’s controls to begin or end the event as appropriate.
These are YouTube’s documented steps, not a verified VLC-specific recipe. The exact controls and protocol support in VLC should be checked against documentation for the current VLC release before relying on it. YouTube’s stream-settings guidance covers creating and resetting keys; only a channel owner or manager can reset a key.

How to verify a VLC schedule before depending on it
- Check current VLC documentation. Confirm both that your version can send to YouTube using the current ingest method and that it supports changing video sources at specified times. Do not infer either capability from YouTube’s event scheduler.
- Test the full chain privately or as unlisted. Use a test event and confirm that the intended feed reaches YouTube before planning a public schedule.
- Check the preview and stream health. Confirm that the picture and audio are present and stable, and monitor the stream rather than assuming a scheduled event means the encoder is working.
- Verify every changeover. Observe transitions at the intended times, including what happens if a file is missing, playback ends early, or the connection drops. The cited YouTube guidance does not specify VLC’s behavior in these cases.
YouTube recommends matching stream quality to available upload capacity and testing before an event. Its current encoder-settings page gives recommendations by resolution, frame rate, and codec; choose settings for the actual feed rather than applying a bitrate without those qualifications. Its operational tips also advise preparing the encoder, checking the preview, confirming accessibility, and monitoring audio and video. Protect the stream key
Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it, show it in a recording, or include it in a screenshot. If it is exposed, a channel owner or manager can reset it in YouTube’s live stream settings; update the encoder with the replacement key.
