vMix: visual production and basic input automation
vMix is production and streaming software with a visual interface for live production. Its PlayList feature supports basic input automation, including setting item start times, durations and transitions. That can suit a producer who wants to control a live show and sequence inputs without building the entire workflow around command-line scripts.
There is an important scheduling limit: vMix’s knowledge base says the software is primarily designed for single live events and does not support time-of-day scheduling. A playlist’s item timing is not the same as a scheduler that starts a stream at a specified clock time or manages a recurring 24/7 schedule.
FFmpeg: a building block for a scripted pipeline
FFmpeg is a software encoder and media-processing tool that can form part of a scripted YouTube streaming setup. A continuous playlist workflow also needs a way to define and advance the playlist, keep the process supervised, monitor stream health, handle reconnections and configure YouTube ingest. Those are operational layers around FFmpeg, not capabilities established merely by choosing the software.

Choose vMix when production control is central
- You need a visual workspace for live switching, graphics or other production controls.
- Your playlist use is basic input automation rather than a requirement for vMix to start streams at set times of day.
- You have a separate plan for any required scheduling, monitoring and recovery.
Choose an FFmpeg-based pipeline when you can own the engineering
- You prefer scripting and can configure the media-processing and streaming workflow.
- You can supply and maintain the playlist logic, scheduling, process supervision, health checks and recovery behavior.
- You can test the actual media and ingest path you intend to use rather than assume that a command or process will remain healthy indefinitely.
Assess the continuity requirement before committing
Write down whether the stream must begin at a clock time, repeat on a schedule, run unattended, recover after a dropped connection, or use overlays and live switching. Then decide which component will perform each job. Neither a vMix playlist nor the name FFmpeg answers all of those questions on its own.

YouTube ingest and media format considerations
vMix’s streaming help lists H.264, AV1 or HEVC video and AAC audio among its supported encoder choices. This describes vMix’s streaming options; it is not a head-to-head codec or reliability benchmark against stand-alone FFmpeg.
If you use YouTube’s HLS ingestion route, YouTube’s official developer guide requires the encoder’s media playlists and media segments to conform to the HTTP Live Streaming 2nd Edition specification. HLS has its own playlist-and-segment requirements, so do not assume that a custom RTMP setup and an HLS setup are interchangeable.

Confirm the source media format, the vMix edition and configuration you plan to use, and the YouTube ingest method before designing the workflow. The sources cited for this comparison do not establish a universal bitrate, resolution, keyframe interval or FFmpeg command that fits every setup.
Plan for failure, not just playback
A continuous stream is a system, not simply a media player left running. Before relying on either approach unattended, decide who or what will detect a stopped process or dropped YouTube connection, restart or reconnect it, and alert you if recovery fails. Test the full path with the actual playlist and expected duration. No comparative uptime figure or automatic-recovery guarantee for either vMix or FFmpeg is established here.

- Scheduling: Identify the component responsible for starting and repeating the stream; do not treat playlist item timing as time-of-day scheduling.
- Supervision: Decide how a stopped encoder or failed input will be detected and what restarts it.
- Monitoring: Define how you will know the YouTube stream has stopped or is no longer receiving the intended content.
- Recovery: Test what happens after a network interruption or dropped stream, including whether an operator must intervene.
- Media checks: Verify the playlist’s files and transitions in the real workflow before leaving it unattended.
