Critics have been favorable toward Voidtrain. Metacritic’s PC page shows an 82 Metascore, labeled “Generally Favorable,” from four critic reviews: three positive, one mixed, and none negative. Reviewers consistently praise the train-centered gameplay loop, the progression systems, and the art direction. The most common complaint is repetition in stations, arenas, and other activities away from the train. The sample is small, so treat the score as a snapshot of early reception rather than a settled consensus.
What the critic scores show
Metacritic’s PC critic page lists four reviews. Quote the 82 with its platform and sample size attached; four reviews from one aggregator cannot stand in for industry-wide agreement. The reviews are spread across outlets and dates, which gives a rough picture of how the game landed at launch and in the months after.

What critics praise
The train as the core loop
The strongest recurring praise is for the idea of expanding a train while crossing an unfamiliar, hostile void. Hooked Gamers described the gameplay as “an incredibly satisfying gameplay loop” with “rich progression systems,” and GameOver.gr singled out “the allure of driving a train through infinite space” and the crafting systems. Crafting and upgrading are presented as the reason to keep going, not as filler between story beats.
#1 Best Overall
- Biology card game - learn biology from a science game where players build peptide chains out of amino acids. More fun than biology class, players learn about Cells converting genes into proteins.
- Strategic play - An open card drafting game about building proteins with a level of strategy to engage an adult gamer, yet intuitive enough for kids 10 and up to play at home or in the classroom.
- Accurate science - all organelles, Cells and science vocabulary in peptide are concepts covered in high school biology class, making it one of the best educational games to aid science teachers.
- Who can play - perfect for the Gamer, science class or family game night. Teachers, Scientists, biologists, and students love playing this geeky science game; and it makes a great birthday surprise
- Learn science - A game for the classroom designed to teach the genetics of DNA and mRNA translation at middle school, High School or college levels. Peptide complies with STEM and nags standards.
Story, atmosphere and art
Reviewers were less impressed by the plot than by how it is delivered. Hooked Gamers called the story “far from sophisticated” but “intriguing enough to keep you invested from beginning to end,” and praised the “compelling art style.” XboxEra went further, calling the story “intriguing, emotional” and saying the studio, Hypetrain Digital, “deftly weaves” it into the gameplay.
What critics criticize
Repetition away from the train
This is the caveat that appears most often. GameOver.gr put it most directly: “Voidtrain can certainly hook you with its premise and well-made crafting systems. However, it’s held back by repetition in everything outside the train, from the overly similar station layouts to the one-note arenas.” GameGrin was more forgiving, noting “some minor issues” before concluding the game is “an adventure that you should experience.”
Grind and survival pacing
Hooked Gamers framed the game as “the quintessential AA game” and suggested that players wanting a “more casual approach to survival gaming” should try it. That framing implies a pace and difficulty curve that some players will find slower than typical survival titles. Players who dislike survival progression should expect that friction to matter more than the critics’ average suggests.
Player reviews on Steam
When the Steam store page was checked on October 8, 2026, it showed 73% positive from 8,746 all-time user reviews and 70% positive from 90 recent reviews. These figures change as reviews come in, so cite them with the access date. Steam user reviews also come from a self-selected group, so they describe sentiment rather than a representative survey of players.
Recommended Free Tools
Player comments echo the critics. One Steam reviewer praised resource gathering, train upgrades, customizable weapons, and co-op, while criticizing repetitive enemies and arena encounters. Another described the interface as frustratingly complex. PC Gamer’s February 21, 2026 coverage summarized the same split: players praised the premise and characters, and complained about grindy progression and clunky first-person combat.
Who the reviews suggest it suits
The review themes point to a fairly specific audience. The sources do not include a controlled comparison, so the following is an inference from what reviewers praised and criticized, not a verdict from hands-on comparison testing.
Rank #2
- 2 to 5 players
- For ages 12 and up
- Likely to enjoy it: players who like gathering resources, crafting, and steadily upgrading a moving base; players who want a story that supports the gameplay rather than leads it; and players who are comfortable with solo or co-op survival.
- Likely to be less persuaded: players who dislike grind, repeated locations, or repeated enemy encounters; and players who want the combat to carry the experience.
When comparing Voidtrain with other survival-crafting games, five points matter most: how much progression comes from upgrading a mobile train versus a fixed base; the balance between gathering, crafting and combat; tolerance for repeated locations; solo versus co-op preference; and how much the story and atmosphere matter to you.

The Steam listing names Hypetrain Digital as both developer and publisher. Early Access began on Steam on May 9, 2023, and the full release arrived on November 7, 2025. The listing describes single-player, online co-op, and cross-platform multiplayer. The publisher’s full-release announcement says the game supports crossplay with the Epic Games Store and Xbox. Metacritic lists PC, Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 for the game.
The full release includes the third and final chapter of the story, and the publisher’s Update 1.0 announcement presents it as the end of the Early Access period. Players who started in an earlier version can continue their existing saves. A new game may be the better choice if you want to experience all the accumulated changes from the start.
XboxEra’s launch-time recommendation mentioned Xbox Game Pass. That was a launch-time reference, and current subscription access and regional availability were not confirmed for this article. Check the storefront and subscription service in your region before buying.
Updates since launch

- Patch 1.05 was announced in a publisher post from February 2026 and was scheduled to launch on February 19, 2026, with gameplay improvements, fixes and quality-of-life updates.
- Tour de Void was introduced in the same February announcement. It lets Rofleemo travel temporarily as a tourist, take on tasks and challenges, and earn tickets redeemable for rail skins, character items, decorations, perks, upgrades and train trophies. Any free-claim period or later price attached to the event was time-limited, so check current terms before relying on it.
These announcements show continued post-launch support through early 2026. They do not establish which patch is latest on any given day, so check the publisher’s channels before writing about the current version.
