Yes—if the card is Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider. Its replacement effects change how many counters are put on permanents, so they can change a planeswalker’s starting loyalty when it enters the battlefield. A planeswalker you control normally enters with twice its printed starting loyalty while you control Monstrous Raider. If an opponent controls Monstrous Raider, the loyalty counters that opponent puts on a planeswalker are halved, rounded down.
That answer does not apply to every card named Vorinclex. Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger has abilities about mana and lands, not counters, so it does not alter planeswalker loyalty. The other important limits are that Monstrous Raider does not double loyalty counters paid as an activation cost, and it does not reduce loyalty lost from damage.

Which Vorinclex are you asking about?
Magic: The Gathering has more than one Vorinclex, and their names do not mean they have the same rules text. The planeswalker interaction comes from Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider, whose abilities modify counters put on permanents or players. Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger does not have a counter-modifying ability.

How Vorinclex changes a planeswalker entering the battlefield
A planeswalker enters the battlefield with loyalty counters equal to the loyalty number printed in its lower-right corner. That number is its starting loyalty. It is not a loyalty ability, and it is not a choice made by the player casting the card.
The entry event is treated as putting those loyalty counters on the planeswalker. Because Monstrous Raider modifies counters being put on permanents, its replacement effect can modify the entry event before the counters are placed.
If you control Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider
When you control Monstrous Raider, counters you put on a permanent are doubled. A planeswalker entering under your control therefore receives twice its printed starting loyalty, assuming no other replacement effect changes the event.

| Printed starting loyalty | Normal entry | With your Monstrous Raider |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 | 2 |
| 2 | 2 | 4 |
| 3 | 3 | 6 |
| 4 | 4 | 8 |
| 5 | 5 | 10 |
| 6 | 6 | 12 |
For example, a planeswalker with printed starting loyalty 4 normally enters with four loyalty counters. If you control Monstrous Raider, it enters with eight instead. The card’s printed number remains 4; only the number of counters actually placed on the permanent changes.
If an opponent controls Vorinclex
If an opponent controls Monstrous Raider, that opponent’s replacement effect applies to counters that opponent puts on permanents or players. The entry counters are therefore halved, rounded down, when that opponent’s Vorinclex is the relevant modifier.

| Printed starting loyalty | Normal entry | With an opponent’s Monstrous Raider |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 | 0 |
| 2 | 2 | 1 |
| 3 | 3 | 1 |
| 4 | 4 | 2 |
| 5 | 5 | 2 |
| 6 | 6 | 3 |
Thus, a planeswalker with printed starting loyalty 5 can enter with only two loyalty counters while an opponent controls Monstrous Raider. The result is rounded down, not rounded to the nearest whole number.
Why control of Vorinclex matters
Monstrous Raider has two separate abilities that look at who would put the counters on the permanent or player. One applies to counters you would put on; the other applies to counters an opponent would put on. The controller of the Vorinclex, not merely the controller of the planeswalker, determines which side of that distinction is relevant.

This is why the same planeswalker can have different entry loyalty in two games. If you cast it while you control Monstrous Raider, your replacement effect doubles the entry counters. If an opponent controls Monstrous Raider, that opponent’s effect halves the counters they would put on. The official Kaldheim Release Notes emphasize that Vorinclex cares who is putting the counters on the permanent or player.
What changes if control changes later?
The entry event is modified when the planeswalker enters. If control of the planeswalker changes afterward, its existing loyalty counters do not get recalculated. Future counter events are judged by who would put those counters on the permanent at that later event, together with which Vorinclex effects are present then.
For example, a planeswalker that entered with eight loyalty because you controlled Monstrous Raider does not immediately fall to four if an opponent later gains control of it. The eight counters are already on it. A later effect that puts counters on it is a separate event and must be evaluated separately.

Planeswalker loyalty abilities: costs are not doubled
The most common mistake is assuming that Monstrous Raider doubles every loyalty change connected with a planeswalker. It does not. A loyalty ability has a cost and an effect. The counter change required to activate the ability is part of the cost.
When a planeswalker ability says “+1,” “+2,” or another positive loyalty cost, you pay that cost by putting the stated number of loyalty counters on the planeswalker. Monstrous Raider does not turn a +1 cost into a +2 cost or a +2 cost into a +4 cost. The number of loyalty counters put on as the activation cost is not doubled.
The Foundations Release Notes specifically clarify this point: the number of loyalty counters put on as the cost to activate a loyalty ability is not doubled by Vorinclex.
| Loyalty event | Does Monstrous Raider modify it? | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Planeswalker enters with its starting loyalty | Yes, if the relevant Vorinclex effect is present. | Those starting counters are put on the permanent as it enters. |
| Paying a +1 loyalty cost to activate an ability | No. | The counters are paid as an activation cost, not created by the ability’s effect. |
| Resolving an ability that says to put counters on a permanent | Potentially yes. | That is a counter event produced by an effect, so the applicable replacement effects are checked. |
| Removing loyalty counters as a cost | Not doubled. | Monstrous Raider changes counters being put on, not counters being removed. |
Keep the cost-and-effect distinction in mind when reading a complicated planeswalker. If the counter change happens while paying the activation cost, do not double it merely because Vorinclex is on the battlefield. If the resolving effect later instructs you to put counters on a permanent, that later event can be modified.
Damage to a planeswalker is a separate rule
Planeswalker damage is not a counter-placement event. When a planeswalker is dealt damage, it loses that many loyalty counters. Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider does not halve the damage or reduce the number of loyalty counters lost.

If a planeswalker is dealt 3 damage, it loses 3 loyalty counters under the normal damage rule, regardless of whether you control Monstrous Raider, an opponent controls it, or no Vorinclex is on the battlefield. Monstrous Raider’s text concerns counters being put on permanents or players; it does not replace the rule that converts damage dealt to a planeswalker into loyalty loss.
This also means that a planeswalker with doubled starting loyalty is not protected from damage in any special way. It simply begins with a larger number of counters. Damage removes loyalty according to the damage dealt.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Multiple effects that modify counters
Vorinclex may not be the only replacement effect trying to change a counter event. The Kaldheim Release Notes explain that when multiple effects would modify counters on a permanent you control, you choose the order in which to apply them.
That choice can matter when one effect doubles counters, another halves them, or another changes the number or type of counters. Apply one replacement effect to the event, then check whether the remaining effects still apply to the modified event. Do not assume that the game always applies effects in the order the cards entered the battlefield.

Worked scenarios
You cast a four-loyalty planeswalker with your Monstrous Raider in play
The planeswalker’s printed starting loyalty is 4. Its normal entry event would put four loyalty counters on it. Your Monstrous Raider replaces that event with one that puts eight counters on it. It enters with eight.
You cast a five-loyalty planeswalker while your opponent controls Monstrous Raider
The opponent’s Vorinclex modifies the counters that opponent would put on permanents. The five-counter entry event is halved and rounded down, so the planeswalker enters with two loyalty counters.
Your planeswalker has a +2 ability
Activating the ability requires putting two loyalty counters on the planeswalker as a cost. Monstrous Raider does not change that cost to four. Pay two, then put the ability on the stack.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAn ability resolves and instructs you to put counters on a planeswalker
This is not an activation cost. It is a counter event created by an effect. Check the Vorinclex replacement effects that apply at that moment. A Vorinclex you control can double those counters; an opponent’s Vorinclex can halve the counters that opponent would put on a permanent, with rounding down.
Your planeswalker takes damage
Damage removes loyalty counters equal to the damage dealt. Vorinclex does not change that number. The fact that the planeswalker may have entered with extra loyalty does not alter the damage rule.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming every Vorinclex works the same way: Voice of Hunger does not modify counters. Check the full card name.
- Doubling a positive loyalty cost: A +1 or +2 cost is paid normally. Monstrous Raider does not increase it.
- Halving damage: Damage removes loyalty counters normally. It is not a counter-placement event.
- Ignoring rounding: An opponent’s halving effect rounds down. Five becomes two, not three.
- Using current loyalty instead of printed starting loyalty: Entry begins with the printed loyalty number, then replacement effects modify the number of counters placed.
- Recalculating old counters after control changes: Existing counters remain. Only a new counter event is evaluated under the effects present at that time.
- Applying replacement effects automatically in card order: When several effects apply, use the applicable replacement-effect rules and choose the order when the rules give you that choice.
A quick ruling checklist
- Identify the exact card: Monstrous Raider or Voice of Hunger.
- Ask whether the event puts counters on a permanent or player, rather than removing counters or dealing damage.
- Determine who would put the counters on the permanent or player.
- Check whether a Vorinclex effect is present and apply doubling or halving as appropriate.
- If halving applies, round down.
- If the event is a loyalty activation cost, do not double the counters paid as that cost.
- If several replacement effects apply, apply them in the order permitted by the rules.
For the title question, the practical answer is therefore conditional: Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider can dramatically change a planeswalker’s starting loyalty and other counters put on it, but it does not increase loyalty activation costs, reduce damage, or affect the mana-and-land abilities of Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger.
