VPS vs Shared Hosting for WordPress: Which Is Faster? How to Run a Fair Speed Test

A VPS can provide more consistent WordPress speed under resource pressure, but shared hosting may be faster with better caching and geography. Learn how to benchmark both fairly and diagnose a slower VPS.

Short answer: A VPS can make WordPress faster and more consistent when a shared plan is hitting CPU, RAM, disk-I/O, PHP-worker, process or database limits. It is not automatically faster. A well-tuned shared server with SSD or NVMe storage, OPcache and server-side page caching can beat a small, overloaded or poorly configured VPS. The only reliable way to choose is to benchmark identical WordPress installations under the same cache, geography and traffic conditions.

What “faster” means for a WordPress site

WordPress response time is the combined result of application code, database work, memory, storage and network I/O. Hosting type is only one variable. A fast-looking homepage can hide a slow uncached admin request, a database-heavy product query or a queue of PHP workers waiting for CPU.

  • Time to first byte (TTFB): how long the server takes to begin responding. It exposes DNS, network, web-server, PHP and database delay, but says little about image, script or font loading after the first byte.
  • Full response time: how long the server takes to deliver the complete HTML response. This is useful for uncached pages and dynamic requests.
  • Throughput: successful requests per second or completed transactions per minute at a defined concurrency.
  • Tail latency: the 95th or 99th percentile response time. A site that is usually quick but occasionally stalls can feel slow during traffic spikes.
  • Error rate and saturation: failed requests, timeouts and whether CPU, memory, disk I/O, PHP workers or process counts are exhausted.

Browser scores also include front-end factors such as theme JavaScript, image size and third-party scripts. Use them alongside server measurements rather than treating one synthetic score as a hosting verdict.

Shared hosting and VPS: what actually differs

Factor Shared hosting VPS
CPU and RAM Multiple accounts share a host’s hardware. The provider applies account-level CPU, RAM or process limits. A virtual machine receives an assigned amount of vCPU and RAM. “Dedicated” resources still depend on the provider’s physical-node contention and CPU policy.
Storage and I/O Accounts share storage and may be capped by Disk I/O or IOPS limits. You can receive a defined virtual disk and higher limits, but the underlying array and virtualization layer still matter.
PHP execution PHP-worker counts, NPROC and total-process limits are usually preset. You can normally tune PHP workers, timeouts and process managers, subject to the plan’s CPU and RAM.
Database Database CPU, connections and disk access compete with other accounts. You control database settings and can allocate more memory, but poor tuning can waste the advantage.
Caching Some providers offer integrated server-side page caching, OPcache and object caching with little setup. You must install, configure and maintain equivalent layers unless the VPS is managed.
Operations The host usually handles the operating system, patches and much of the security work. An unmanaged VPS makes you responsible for updates, hardening, backups, monitoring and recovery.

The practical comparison is therefore not “shared versus VPS” in the abstract. It is one complete stack versus another: hardware, limits, web server, PHP configuration, database, caches, content and distance to the visitor.

Why a VPS can be faster

Predictable resources under load

When a shared account repeatedly reaches CPU, RAM, NPROC or PHP-worker limits, requests queue or fail even if the site is modest at quiet times. A VPS with sufficient vCPU and memory gives you a larger, more predictable operating envelope. The benefit appears most clearly during concurrent requests, cron jobs, imports, backups or checkout activity—not necessarily in a one-request homepage test.

More headroom for database-heavy work

WooCommerce catalog searches, faceted filters, reporting, page builders, multilingual plugins and import/export tools create more database and PHP work than a mostly static blog. Extra memory can keep database indexes and PHP data in memory, while faster storage reduces waits for reads, writes and temporary files.

Control over the software stack

On a VPS you can select a current PHP release, tune the PHP process manager, adjust database buffers, enable a persistent object cache and use a web-server configuration suited to the site. OPcache keeps precompiled PHP bytecode in memory, avoiding repeated parsing. Server-side solutions such as Varnish or NGINX page caching generally work faster than plugin- or file-based full-page caching when the host supports them.

Isolation from noisy neighbours

Isolation reduces the chance that another account’s backup, traffic burst or inefficient script consumes the shared machine’s CPU or disk queue. It does not guarantee isolation from an oversold physical node, so the provider’s hardware and CPU policy still need to be measured.

Why a good shared plan can beat a VPS

Integrated caching may be better tuned

A managed shared platform may already have a reverse proxy, OPcache, page cache, object cache and CDN rules configured for WordPress. A small VPS that serves every request through uncached PHP can lose badly even with faster virtual hardware.

A small VPS can run out of memory quickly

The operating system, web server, database, PHP workers, control panel, security scanner and backups all consume RAM. If the VPS starts swapping, latency can rise dramatically. Adding workers without adding memory often increases contention rather than throughput.

Distance and network paths dominate some tests

A shared server near your visitors can deliver a lower TTFB than a VPS in another region. CDN presence and edge location can outweigh modest CPU differences for static assets and cached pages.

Administration mistakes erase the hardware advantage

Outdated PHP, disabled OPcache, an undersized database buffer, slow DNS, incorrect compression or an over-aggressive security plugin can make a VPS slower. Performance is an outcome of configuration, not a label on the plan.

How to run a fair VPS-versus-shared speed test

Test the hosting environments, not two slightly different websites. Use a staging copy or a controlled clone and keep the application constant.

  1. Clone the same site. Copy the database, WordPress core, theme, plugins, media, permalink structure and representative content. Keep plugin and theme versions identical.
  2. Record the environment. For each host, note geography, CPU model or vCPU policy, RAM, storage type (SSD or NVMe), PHP version, database version, web server, PHP-worker limits, process limits and CDN location. Record whether the service is managed and which party handles patches and backups.
  3. Make versions current and comparable. WordPress notes that PHP 7.4 and MySQL 5.5.5 may still run but are end-of-life. A representative modern test should use currently supported PHP and database releases on both environments, or clearly disclose any older version.
  4. Define cache states. Run a cold or uncached test with page cache, object cache, CDN caching and OPcache states documented. Then run a warmed cached test. Do not compare a cached shared page with an uncached VPS page.
  5. Choose representative URLs. Include a public homepage or article, a database-heavy archive or search page, and dynamic actions such as a logged-in account or cart where relevant. Exclude analytics beacons and third-party calls from server-only measurements.
  6. Test multiple load levels. Measure a single request for baseline latency, moderate concurrency for normal traffic, and a higher concurrency that reflects a realistic spike. Stop a stress run if it risks corrupting the site; the goal is to observe saturation, not to damage production.
  7. Capture the right metrics. Collect TTFB, complete response time, throughput, error rate and CPU, RAM, disk-I/O, PHP-worker and process utilization. Record both median and tail values, such as the 95th percentile.
  8. Repeat the runs. Perform several repetitions at each load level, discard only clearly invalid runs, and report the median plus the spread. Warm caches consistently before cached runs and allow background jobs to finish or disable them on both copies.
  9. Keep geography fixed. Use the same test location, protocol, DNS setup and CDN region. A change in visitor distance can mask the hosting difference.

At minimum, publish the configuration and cache state beside every result. Without those details, readers cannot tell whether a score reflects hosting, application changes or a warm cache.

Use the WordPress Hosting Benchmark Tool as one layer

The WordPress Hosting Benchmark Tool can measure CPU performance, memory bandwidth, disk speed, persistent object-cache behavior and network download speed. Run it on both environments with the same WordPress copy and record the tool version and conditions.

Use those component results to explain a web test. For example, weak disk scores paired with high uncached TTFB suggest storage or database waits; strong component scores with poor browser results point toward theme, image or third-party overhead. The tool does not replace browser or load testing because it cannot represent every plugin, query pattern, cache rule or visitor geography.

What a published comparison actually shows

A TechRadar comparison of a WooCommerce site reported the following environment-specific scores for a Bluehost VPS and SiteGround Cloud. These are results from that test setup, not proof that every VPS beats every shared or cloud plan.

Workload in the published test Bluehost VPS SiteGround Cloud Difference shown
Operations with large text data 7.87 6.34 VPS scored higher
Filesystem write ability 8.54 7.14 VPS scored higher
Iterative mathematical calculations 10 8.81 VPS scored higher
Complex database queries 10 6.95 VPS scored higher

The useful lesson is methodological: scores are meaningful only with the site, software, location, cache state and workload disclosed. They should not be converted into a universal ranking or an expected percentage improvement for your own site.

Why your VPS might be slower than shared hosting

It is undersized or swapping

Check memory pressure, swap activity and load average during a test. Reduce unnecessary services, lower PHP-worker counts to fit available RAM, or move to a larger plan. More workers are not a substitute for memory.

OPcache or page caching is missing

Confirm that OPcache is enabled for the PHP version serving WordPress. Verify that the page cache is actually serving cache hits and that invalidation rules are not bypassing it. If the shared host uses a reverse proxy, reproduce an equivalent server-side cache before comparing.

Database and object caching are poorly configured

Persistent object caching can reduce repeated trips to the database. Check cache hit behavior, database slow queries and disk waits. Avoid increasing database buffers blindly; use observed memory and query data to guide changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Storage or process limits are lower than expected

Measure disk latency and I/O utilization while running imports, image processing or write-heavy requests. On shared plans, review Disk I/O, IOPS, NPROC and total-process limits; on a VPS, inspect virtual-disk performance and provider throttling.

The test is geographically unfair

Run both copies from the same region and use the same CDN configuration. If the VPS is farther from visitors, compare origin TTFB separately from CDN-served static assets.

Background work is competing with requests

Backups, malware scans, scheduled imports, image regeneration and cron tasks can consume CPU or disk. Align schedules or isolate them on both environments before drawing a conclusion.

When shared hosting is the sensible choice

  • The site has low-to-moderate traffic and tests do not show sustained CPU, RAM, I/O, PHP-worker or process saturation.
  • The provider supplies strong server-side page caching, OPcache and a nearby CDN location.
  • You prefer the host to manage operating-system patches, backups, security and routine tuning.
  • Traffic is predictable and short concurrency spikes do not create timeouts or long tail latency.
  • The application is a blog, brochure site or small publication without heavy logged-in or database-intensive workflows.

Monitor limits rather than upgrading on reputation alone. A shared plan remains appropriate while it delivers the required response times with headroom and reliable support.

When a VPS is worth the extra responsibility

  • The site needs predictable CPU and RAM allocation or repeatedly hits shared-account limits.
  • WooCommerce, page builders, multilingual plugins, imports or exports create sustained PHP and database work.
  • You need custom PHP extensions, web-server rules, queue workers or database settings unavailable on shared hosting.
  • Persistent object caching and controlled cache invalidation are central to the application.
  • Concurrent traffic causes unacceptable tail latency even after application and cache optimization on the shared plan.

For higher-resource WordPress workloads, WordPress server-environment guidance lists 512 MB or more as a PHP memory baseline. Treat that as a floor for the PHP environment, not as a complete VPS specification: the operating system, database and all services also require memory.

Managed versus unmanaged VPS: include the human cost

Responsibility Managed VPS Unmanaged VPS
Operating-system and security patches Provider commonly applies or assists with them; confirm scope and timing. You schedule, test and apply them.
Backups and restoration May be included, but retention, off-site storage and restore testing must be verified. You choose the system, storage and restore process.
Performance tuning Support may help with PHP, web-server and cache settings, subject to the service contract. You diagnose every bottleneck.
Cost Higher recurring price reflects administration and support. Lower service cost can be offset by engineering time, monitoring and incident risk.

Compare total cost and administration time, not the monthly virtual-machine fee alone. A slower but managed platform may be the better business decision if your team cannot maintain a secure, recoverable server.

A practical migration and verification checklist

  1. Lower the DNS record’s time-to-live before migration, while keeping the old site available.
  2. Create a full database and file backup, and test that the backup can be restored.
  3. Build the VPS with a supported PHP and database release, HTTPS, a firewall, least-privilege accounts and automatic security updates where appropriate.
  4. Replicate PHP memory, upload limits, worker settings, OPcache and cache exclusions required by the application.
  5. Clone the site to staging, verify permalinks, scheduled tasks, email delivery, media, payment flows and logged-in sessions.
  6. Warm and measure caches, then run the same baseline and concurrency tests used on the shared host.
  7. Switch DNS during a low-risk period, monitor errors and resource saturation, and keep the old environment intact until traffic and backups are confirmed.
  8. Repeat the benchmark after real traffic arrives. A migration is successful only if production tail latency, error rate and operational reliability improve.

How to decide from your own measurements

Observed result Interpretation Next action
Shared hosting is fast when cached and remains below limits under normal concurrency The current stack has adequate headroom. Stay shared and monitor limits; optimize the application before paying for isolation.
Shared hosting has high tail latency or errors exactly when CPU, I/O, PHP workers or processes max out A resource ceiling is the likely bottleneck. Remove avoidable work, ask the provider about limits, then test a larger shared tier or VPS.
VPS is faster uncached but slower cached The VPS cache or web-server configuration is weaker. Fix OPcache, page-cache and CDN configuration before judging the hardware.
VPS wins component benchmarks but not real requests Application, database, network distance or cache behavior dominates. Profile queries and PHP, align geography and reproduce the shared host’s effective caching.
Both environments fail at the same workload The application or traffic pattern, not hosting class, is the limiting factor. Optimize queries, reduce plugin work, add caching or redesign the expensive operation.

Bottom line

Choose the environment that delivers the required median and tail response times with measurable headroom. Shared hosting is often the best value for a modest, well-cached WordPress site. A VPS is the stronger option when resource ceilings, sustained concurrency, database-heavy work or custom server requirements are the real constraint. Benchmark identical sites with identical cache and geography, disclose the load profile, and treat every published score as evidence for that setup—not a guarantee for yours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does moving to a VPS automatically improve Core Web Vitals?

No. Core Web Vitals also depend on theme code, images, JavaScript, fonts, layout stability and third-party services. A VPS can reduce server delay, but it cannot fix a heavy front end by itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should a WooCommerce benchmark include logged-in and checkout requests?

Yes, if those workflows matter to the site. Test public cacheable pages separately from cart, account and checkout sessions, which are normally dynamic and exercise PHP, sessions and database writes.

What should I do if a host will not disclose CPU or process limits?

Treat the missing information as an operational risk. Record observed CPU, memory, I/O, worker and process saturation during your own load test, and require support to explain throttling, backups and restoration before relying on the service.

Can one benchmark score identify the fastest WordPress host?

No. Scores are workload- and configuration-specific. Compare the same site, versions, cache state, geography and concurrency, then choose the stack that meets your real traffic and reliability requirements.
