A VPC is an isolated virtual network that provides IP address space, subnets, routes, gateways and security controls for cloud resources. They are different layers, not competing versions of the same product, and a VPS-like cloud server can run inside a VPC.
Choose a VPS when you mainly need one defined server with predictable resources and straightforward administration. Choose a VPC-based design when several services must communicate privately, or when you need custom routing, private subnets, peering, hybrid connectivity or cloud-native network controls. Many production systems use both.

What is a VPS?
A virtual private server (VPS) is a virtual machine sold as a hosting service. Virtualization divides a physical server into separate virtual environments. Each customer receives an operating system and an allocation of virtualized compute resources, while the underlying hardware may be shared with other customers. Google Cloud describes a VPS as an isolated virtual environment on a physical server.

Typical VPS workloads
- Hosting a website, API or control panel
- Running a game server or community service for a defined player population
- Operating a database alongside an application
- Hosting email or collaboration software
- Providing development, staging and test environments
- Running a virtual desktop or remote workstation
A VPS answers the question, “Where will my server software run, and what resources will it have?” It does not by itself define how a larger collection of services is segmented or routed.
What is a VPC?
A virtual private cloud (VPC) is a software-defined network boundary for cloud resources. In AWS documentation, a VPC is a virtual network in a logically isolated area of the cloud. You select an IP address range and then organize that range into subnets. Route tables determine where traffic goes; gateways provide paths to the internet or other networks; and security settings control permitted communication.
A VPC is not a server and cannot run an application on its own. It is the environment that connects and isolates servers, containers, databases, load balancers and serverless workloads. Google Cloud describes VPC networking as serving virtual machines, Kubernetes containers and serverless services, with global and scalable behavior. DigitalOcean describes a VPC as a private network for a collection of resources, isolated from the public internet and from other VPC networks.
What a VPC controls
- Addressing: The private IP range and subnet boundaries used by resources.
- Placement: Which resources sit in public-facing or private network segments.
- Routing: The paths traffic follows between subnets, gateways and connected networks.
- Connectivity: Internet access, links to other virtual networks and connections to an organization’s data center.
- Isolation: Separation from unrelated cloud networks and controls over which resources may communicate.
A VPC answers the question, “How should my cloud resources communicate, and which paths should be allowed?”
VPS vs VPC at a glance
| Comparison point | VPS | VPC |
|---|---|---|
| Layer | Compute and operating system | Networking and isolation |
| Primary object | One virtual server | A virtual network containing multiple resources |
| Provides | Virtual CPU, memory, storage and an operating system | Address ranges, subnets, routes, gateways and network security settings |
| Typical scope | A single application, website, database or server workload | Several servers, services, containers, databases or serverless components |
| Software execution | Runs your server software directly | Does not run software without attached compute or managed services |
| Scaling focus | Resize, replace or add servers | Redesign subnets, routes and connectivity as the architecture grows |
| Isolation focus | Isolation of the virtual machine from other customers on the host | Isolation of a network and its traffic from other networks |
| Pricing pattern | Often a fixed monthly allocation in traditional hosting | Network itself may be included, while gateways, addresses, transfer and related services can add usage charges |
| Administration | Install and maintain the operating system and applications | Design and maintain network ranges, routes, gateways and access rules |
| Can they be used together? | Yes; a cloud VPS-like instance can be placed in a VPC | Yes; a VPC commonly contains one or more virtual servers |
The key difference: server versus network
The terms sound similar because both use the word “virtual” and both can be described as private. Their privacy applies to different things. A VPS is a private server environment: virtualization gives you a machine-like operating system and allocated resources. A VPC is a private network environment: software-defined networking gives you address space and traffic boundaries.
Consider a multiplayer game service as an example. The game process, its operating system and its storage need compute. A VPS can provide that compute. If the service also has a public web front end, a private database, an administration service and a second region connected through private links, the VPC provides the network structure that keeps those components organized and controls their paths. The example does not make a VPS and a VPC interchangeable; it shows why the two layers often appear together.
How a VPS and VPC work together
In a cloud architecture, the sequence usually looks like this:

- Create or select the VPC. Define a private IP range and divide it into subnets appropriate for the resources you expect to deploy.
- Define routes and gateways. Decide which traffic remains private, which traffic can reach the internet, and whether a connection to another network is required.
- Launch compute. Deploy a virtual machine or VPS-like instance into the selected subnet. The instance supplies the operating system, CPU, memory and storage.
- Apply security settings. Allow only the required traffic between the instance, other services and external networks.
- Add supporting services. Databases, containers, load balancers or serverless components can use the same network design where the provider supports it.
- Test each path. Verify private service-to-service communication separately from public access, administrative access and outbound updates.
The important boundary is that the instance owns the workload while the VPC owns the surrounding connectivity. Deleting or changing one does not automatically perform the other’s job.
When a VPS is the better fit
One main server workload
A VPS is usually the simpler choice when one server hosts the application, website or game service and the network requirements are ordinary. You can focus on operating-system updates, backups, application configuration and resource monitoring instead of designing a multi-subnet topology.
For a self-managed Linux VPS in this model, Antihost VPS runs on AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D with NVMe storage and full root access, offering 1–16 vCPUs, 2–64 GB RAM and unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port. It is available in the USA East, Netherlands and Ukraine, with a 14-day free trial.
Predictable resource allocation
Traditional VPS plans commonly advertise a defined amount of CPU, memory, storage and transfer for a recurring monthly charge. That model is useful when the workload is steady and you want a bill that is easier to forecast. The exact allocation, oversubscription policy and performance guarantees vary by provider, so read the plan terms rather than assuming every VPS behaves the same way.
Simple administration
Control panels, one server address and a small number of firewall rules can be easier for a solo developer, small gaming community or test project. You still need to secure the operating system, manage credentials, patch software and maintain backups; a VPS is not a managed application by default.
When a VPC-based architecture is the better fit
Several services need private communication
Use a VPC when an application consists of separate front-end, application, database, worker and monitoring components. Private subnets and explicit routes let you keep internal traffic off public interfaces while exposing only the entry points that users need.
Custom routing or gateways are required
A VPC is appropriate when traffic must pass through selected gateways, inspection points or network segments, or when different subnets need different internet and private-network paths.

Peering or hybrid connectivity matters
VPC networks can be linked by peering where the provider supports it. A VPC can also provide connectivity to an organization’s data center. These requirements are network-design decisions that a single VPS plan does not replace.
Cloud-native services are part of the system
Google Cloud documents VPC networking for virtual machines, Kubernetes containers and serverless workloads. If your design combines those resource types, a shared network model is usually more useful than treating each server as an isolated hosting account.
Traditional VPS economics versus cloud VM economics
Traditional VPS hosting is commonly tied to a single physical server and a fixed monthly allocation. Cloud virtual machines generally draw from pooled infrastructure and are often billed according to consumption. Provider terminology is inconsistent: some vendors call a cloud VM a VPS, while others reserve VPS for fixed-plan hosting. Compare the underlying resource model and billing rules instead of relying on the label.
A cloud bill can include more than the virtual machine. Depending on the provider and design, account for:
- Compute time and the selected instance size
- Persistent disks or other storage
- Public IPv4 or other address charges
- Network transfer, especially outbound transfer
- NAT gateways or similar egress components
- Load balancers, managed databases and other services
- Support, backup and monitoring products
AWS documentation notes that some VPC-related components, including NAT gateways and IP address management, can incur separate charges. No universal VPS-versus-VPC price can be stated because region, instance type, traffic, storage and provider pricing determine the total. Check the current regional price pages and quotas before committing.
Scaling, resilience and operational complexity
| Concern | VPS-centered approach | VPC-based multi-resource approach |
|---|---|---|
| Vertical scaling | Resize the server or move to a larger plan, subject to provider limits | Resize instances and adjust the network design as resource counts change |
| Horizontal scaling | Add additional VPS instances and configure how they communicate | Place multiple instances or managed services in appropriate subnets and route them through the VPC |
| Failure domain | A single server can be a single point of failure unless you build redundancy | A VPC enables a topology with multiple resources, but redundancy still requires deliberate deployment across available zones or locations |
| Network growth | Often limited to the server’s interfaces and provider network features | Designed around address capacity, subnet allocation, routes, gateways and links to other networks |
| Operational burden | Lower initial network complexity; higher concentration of responsibility on one machine | More planning and troubleshooting for routes and access controls; easier separation of roles at larger scale |
A VPC does not automatically make an application highly available. It supplies the network foundation; you must still deploy redundant compute, replicate data, monitor failures and test recovery.
Security implications
VPS isolation and VPC isolation address different attack surfaces. A VPS separates your virtual machine from other customers on the host, but any service you expose on that machine still needs operating-system hardening, application updates, least-privilege accounts, backups and a host firewall.

A VPC lets you reduce unnecessary exposure by assigning private addresses, placing internal services in private subnets and controlling routes and permitted traffic. It does not eliminate application vulnerabilities, stolen credentials or misconfigured access rules. Treat the VPC as one layer in a defense-in-depth design.
Basic security checklist for a VPS
- Remove or disable unused services and default accounts.
- Use key-based or otherwise strong administrative authentication.
- Apply operating-system and application security updates promptly.
- Permit only the ports required for the workload.
- Keep tested backups separate from the server.
- Monitor authentication events, resource use and unexpected network activity.
Basic security checklist for a VPC
- Reserve address ranges that do not conflict with connected networks.
- Separate public-facing components from databases and internal services.
- Review route tables and gateways for unintended internet paths.
- Limit communication between subnets to documented application flows.
- Protect private links and administrative paths with appropriate authentication.
- Record network changes so an outage can be traced to a route or security-setting change.
Decision guide: VPS, VPC or both?
| Your situation | Most suitable starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One website, API or small game server with stable demand | VPS | You primarily need a server and a manageable resource allocation. |
| A development environment for one project | VPS, or a cloud VM in a basic VPC | Choose the simpler VPS model unless private service separation is already required. |
| Front end, application tier, database and background workers | Compute instances and services inside a VPC | The network must separate roles and provide controlled private paths. |
| Services that must connect to an office or data center | VPC with hybrid connectivity | The requirement concerns routing between networks, not just server capacity. |
| Several isolated environments for teams or customers | VPC-based design | Subnets, address ranges and routing provide a structure for isolation. |
| Uncertain traffic and rapidly changing resource counts | Cloud compute in a VPC | Pooled infrastructure and flexible network placement may fit better than a single fixed server, subject to cost controls. |
Common misconceptions and how to avoid them
“A VPS and a VPC are two hosting plans to compare.”
They are usually not alternatives at the same layer. Compare VPS offerings with other compute offerings, and compare VPC designs with other network architectures.

“A VPS is always physically dedicated.”
Virtualization commonly places multiple isolated environments on one physical server. A VPS gives you a virtual machine, not necessarily an entire physical machine.
“Cloud VM and VPS mean exactly the same thing.”
Provider terminology varies. Some cloud platforms use VPS as a marketing term for virtual machines; others distinguish fixed-plan VPS hosting from consumption-billed cloud instances.
“Putting a server in a VPC makes it private automatically.”
Placement, routes, gateways and security settings determine reachability. A server can still have a public path if you configure one.
A practical evaluation checklist
Before selecting a product or architecture, answer these questions:
Best Value
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
- How many independent workloads must run now, and how many are expected later?
- Does each workload need public internet access, or can it use private addresses?
- Will the system connect to another VPC, office network or data center?
- Is traffic steady enough for a fixed monthly allocation, or likely to vary substantially?
- Which components require redundancy, backups or failover?
- Who will patch operating systems and maintain routes, gateways and security settings?
- What are the provider’s current regional limits for instances, subnets, addresses and transfer?
- Which additional charges apply to storage, public addresses, NAT, data transfer and managed services?
If the answers describe one machine and ordinary connectivity, start with a VPS. If they describe multiple services and deliberate private networking, design the VPC first and then choose the compute that belongs inside it.
Bottom line
A VPS supplies the server; a VPC supplies the network around servers and other cloud resources. They are complementary: a VPS-like instance can run inside a VPC, and a VPC is useful even when some workloads are containers or serverless services rather than traditional virtual machines. Select the compute model based on the workload, select the VPC model based on connectivity and isolation, and evaluate total cost using the provider’s current regional pricing and network charges.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a VPS run inside a VPC?
Yes. A cloud virtual machine that is sold or described as a VPS can be launched into a VPC subnet. The instance supplies the operating system and compute resources; the VPC supplies its private address, routes, gateways and network controls.
Recommended Free Tools
Do I need a VPC for a single VPS?
Not necessarily. A single traditional VPS can operate with the provider’s default networking. A VPC becomes valuable when you need private subnets, custom routes, controlled gateways, peering, a connection to another network or communication among multiple services.
Is a VPC automatically more secure than a VPS?
No. A VPC can reduce exposure through private addressing, subnet separation and controlled routes, but security still depends on correct configuration and on hardening every attached server and application.
Why can a cloud provider call its virtual machine a VPS?
Provider terminology is not universal. Some companies use VPS for any virtual server, while others reserve it for fixed-plan hosting on shared physical infrastructure. Compare the resource allocation, billing method, networking and management responsibilities rather than the product name alone.
