vpxmt.dll is usually a Football Manager game file, not a Windows component. If vpxmt.dll is missing or was not found, close the game and restore it through the launcher’s file-verification feature rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The file has appeared in public Football Manager 2017, 2018, 2019 and Football Manager 2024 Demo game depots. Its name strongly suggests a private or renamed VP8/VP9 codec build related to libvpx, but its exact source revision and any modifications by Sports Interactive are not publicly verified.

Identify the file before repairing anything

Fix 1: Verify Football Manager through its launcher

Steam
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click Football Manager.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files. Older Steam versions may call this Local Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish.
- Start Football Manager again.
Steam may download files even if you have verified the installation before. If the verification reports that files were replaced, launch the game immediately before adding mods or overlays again.
Epic Games Store
- Open the Epic Games Launcher.
- Select Library.
- Find Football Manager.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the game.
- Choose Manage.
- Select Verify.
- Wait for verification to complete, then launch the game.
Microsoft Store or Xbox app
- Open Settings from the Windows Start menu.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps.
- Find the Football Manager installation.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the game and test it.
If verification does not restore vpxmt.dll, restart the launcher, install any pending Football Manager update, and run verification again. If the file is still absent, use the launcher’s uninstall and reinstall process. Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine

- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving the Football Manager installation.
- Open the event and review its details.
- If the file belongs to a trusted, officially installed copy, use the available Restore action.
- Run the launcher’s file verification again.
- Start Football Manager.
Do not whitelist or restore vpxmt.dll downloaded from a DLL website. If Windows Security repeatedly removes the file after verification, leave it quarantined and contact SEGA or Sports Interactive support with the detection name and the exact game installation path.
Fix 3: Check for a 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch
A DLL is not interchangeable simply because the filename is identical. Public Football Manager depots contain distinct 32-bit and 64-bit versions of vpxmt.dll.
A mismatch can produce errors such as:
- “The code execution cannot proceed because vpxmt.dll was not found.”
- “vpxmt.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

Do not solve this by copying a file from another edition. Verify the exact Football Manager title and installation through its own launcher. This restores the architecture and build selected by the publisher.

If you are unsure which executable is being started, right-click the shortcut, select Properties, and inspect the Target field. Then confirm that the shortcut points to the current installation rather than an old demo, backup folder or modified executable.
Fix 4: Remove mods, overlays and damaged user settings
Custom graphics, skins, editor data, overlays and damaged preferences can interfere with launch even after the game DLL has been restored.
First remove or move custom additions from the Football Manager installation. Temporarily disable overlays from Steam, Discord, graphics software and other utilities. Then move the user folders below to another location:
C:Users<Your Windows Username>AppDataLocalSports Interactive<Football Manager title>
Move the Preferences and Cache folders rather than deleting them initially. Football Manager regenerates these folders when it starts, and they are separate from saved games.
- Close Football Manager and its launcher.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
%LOCALAPPDATA%. - Open Sports Interactive.
- Open the folder for the affected Football Manager title.
- Move
PreferencesandCacheto the desktop. - Start the game again.
If the game starts, restore custom content one item at a time until you identify the conflict. If it still fails, verify the game files again.

Use this step when verification repeatedly reports success but the file remains absent, or when the launcher cannot write to the existing folder.

- Back up saved games and any settings you need.
- Remove unofficial modifications and custom files.
- Uninstall the affected Football Manager title from its launcher.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the game again from Steam, Epic Games or the Microsoft Store/Xbox app.
- Prefer a new installation folder if the old folder had permission or disk problems.
- Run the game before restoring mods or overlays.
An unofficial or cracked copy may rename, patch or replace codec libraries. The official launcher cannot reliably repair files outside the installation it manages.
Fix 6: Repair broader Windows corruption
Windows repair commands are secondary here. They are unlikely to restore a game-local vpxmt.dll, but they are reasonable if other Windows files and applications are also failing.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Verify Football Manager again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows system files. Neither command makes it safe to copy vpxmt.dll into System32 or SysWOW64.

Fix 7: Check drivers only when the error is broader
A graphics or media driver normally does not supply vpxmt.dll, so driver replacement is not the first repair. Check drivers when Football Manager also crashes, displays graphics errors or fails after a Windows or graphics-card update.
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click your graphics adapter.
- Select Properties and open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider and driver date.
- Use Windows Update or the graphics manufacturer’s official installer for an update.
- Restart Windows and test the game.
Do not remove random devices or install a driver solely because vpxmt.dll is missing. Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers are stale and automate installation; its driver installation features require the full version. Updating a driver will not replace the Football Manager DLL itself.
Check Visual C++ only if the error names it
vpxmt.dll is not the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime. Installing a Visual C++ package is relevant only if the same startup message also names VCRUNTIME140.dll, MSVCP140.dll or another Microsoft runtime.
Use Microsoft’s current supported Visual C++ Redistributable documentation and install the architecture required by the affected application. Do not treat that package as the normal source of vpxmt.dll.

Why regsvr32 normally does not apply
Do not run:
regsvr32 vpxmt.dll
as a general repair. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that register COM or ActiveX components. A private game codec or runtime dependency normally has no registration step. Registration can produce another error without restoring the missing game files.
What not to do
- Do not download
vpxmt.dllfrom a random DLL website. - Do not copy it into
C:WindowsSystem32orC:WindowsSysWOW64. - Do not substitute a DLL from another Football Manager version, demo or computer.
- Do not use a 32-bit DLL with a 64-bit game, or the reverse.
- Do not run
regsvr32unless the publisher specifically documents registration. - Do not disable antivirus permanently to force an unknown file into the game folder.
- Do not assume that a generic “Other” label identifies the developer or publisher.
A standalone official vpxmt.dll download package has not been established. The safe sources are the Football Manager launcher’s verification or repair function and a fresh installation from the official store.
If the error says “specified module could not be found”
That wording does not always mean the named DLL itself is missing. It can mean that a dependency required by vpxmt.dll cannot load. Reverify the game first, then check quarantine, architecture and the installation path.

Contact Football Manager support when verification and a clean reinstall do not resolve the launch failure. Include:
- The exact error text
- The Football Manager edition and store
- The installation path
- Your Windows version
- Whether antivirus quarantined a file
- A DxDiag report
- Any crash or launcher data requested by support
This gives support enough context to distinguish a missing game file from a dependency, architecture, permission or system problem.
