Neither path is automatically better. Choose independence if keeping control of your avatar, channel, schedule, collaborators and business decisions matters most and you can handle—or pay for—production, moderation, marketing, legal and accounting work. Choose an agency if you want coordinated funding, launch promotion, brand-deal and merchandise support, events, technical production and roster collaboration, and you accept a contract that may limit control and share revenue or intellectual property.
The practical decision is not “Which pays more?” Outcomes vary widely. It is “Which responsibilities, rights and risks am I prepared to own?” Compare the two paths on ownership, economics, control, support, exit terms and growth model before you sign or launch.

At a glance: agency or independent?
| Question | Independent creator | Agency creator |
|---|---|---|
| Who controls the character and brand? | You, unless you separately license or assign rights. | The contract may give ownership or usage rights to you, the agency, or both. Do not assume the avatar is yours. |
| Who runs the business? | You coordinate modeling, rigging, streams, editing, moderation, sales, legal, accounting and promotion, or hire contractors. | The agency may coordinate some or all of those functions, subject to its budget, priorities and approval process. |
| How is money divided? | You receive platform and customer revenue after platform deductions, taxes, refunds, chargebacks and operating costs. | You face the same platform deductions plus any agency percentage, recoupment or expenses defined by the contract. |
| How much creative freedom? | Highest: you set the schedule, collaborators, content and sponsorship choices within platform rules and the law. | Rules can cover content, conduct, schedule, sponsors, public statements, collaborations and brand use. |
| What is the growth model? | Experimentation and direct audience development, with optional freelancers or non-exclusive services. | Launch campaigns, shared promotion, roster collaborations, events and investment in agency-owned infrastructure. |
| What happens if you leave? | You decide whether to pause, rebrand or continue, subject to rights held by contractors or licensors. | Termination, notice, post-exit restrictions, account access, model use and fan-community treatment depend on the contract. |
Use the independent column as your baseline for control and the agency column as a list of benefits that must be stated, funded and measurable. A promise of “support” is not a service until the agreement identifies what is delivered, by whom and at whose cost.

What “agency” means—and what it does not
A VTuber agency is a company that develops virtual entertainers as a coordinated business. It may commission avatars, organize live production, market launches, arrange sponsorships, sell merchandise, produce events and promote a roster of creators. Some agreements resemble an employment relationship in day-to-day rules; others are contractor or licensing arrangements. The legal label matters less than the actual rights and obligations in your contract.

YouTube describes a related model, the multi-channel network (MCN), as a third-party provider that may offer audience development, content programming, creator collaborations, digital-rights management, monetization or sales. That description helps explain why agencies can add value, but a VTuber agency can go further by controlling character IP, commissioning models, scheduling appearances or operating merchandise and event businesses.
YouTube also states that creators do not need to join an MCN to succeed. Joining does not change YouTube’s own revenue share, and an MCN typically takes a percentage from the creator’s portion before paying the creator. An agency contract can add separate intellectual-property, production, exclusivity and conduct terms, so never treat an MCN summary as a substitute for reading the agency agreement.
Compare the six issues that determine the real trade-off
1. Ownership of the character, channel and audience
Ownership is more than the image on your debut stream. Ask who owns or controls each item separately:

- The character name, backstory, logo, catchphrases and likeness.
- Your YouTube, Twitch and social-media accounts, including recovery credentials.
- Music, overlays, emotes, thumbnails, scripts, clips and commissioned artwork.
- Merchandise designs, storefront accounts, customer data and mailing lists.
- Recorded streams, short-form clips, translations and fan-community spaces.
An agency may own a character while granting you a limited right to perform it. Another may let you retain the model but restrict use of the name or channel after termination. A third may assign rights to you only after a buyout or other condition. Put the answer for every asset in writing, including what happens to unfinished work and backups when the relationship ends.
2. Economics and accounting
Start with the money that actually arrives, not a headline gross figure. Twitch’s Monetized Streamer Agreement defines “Net Revenue” as amounts Twitch receives after platform and advertising costs, taxes, refunds, chargebacks, discounts, currency-exchange fees and bank or transaction fees. Twitch also says the creator and Twitch remain independent contractors. If an agency receives a share, determine whether it is calculated from gross receipts, platform-defined net revenue or a narrower amount after approved expenses.
Ask for a complete deduction schedule. It should identify platform fees, payment-processing charges, taxes withheld, refunds, chargebacks, production expenses, travel, merchandise costs, advertising, commissions and any recoupment of an advance. Confirm the payment currency, payment date, minimum payout, statements, dispute window and audit rights. A percentage is meaningless without a defined base and timing.

Independent creators keep the upside after costs, but they also pay those costs directly. Agency creators may trade a share of revenue for services or capital. Neither arrangement guarantees a higher take-home amount. A 2025 academic preprint that analyzed more than 1 million hours of public streams from 1,923 VTubers found large variation in livestream income; status alone is not a reliable earnings forecast.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3. Creative and operational control
Independence lets you change your schedule, game mix, language, collaborators, visual style and business priorities quickly. You can test a new format without waiting for approval, but you are also responsible for consequences such as missed deadlines, copyright claims, moderation failures or sponsor conflicts.
An agency may require minimum activity, content review, approval for sponsors, coordinated announcements, roster etiquette, brand-safe conduct or restrictions on public statements. Those rules can protect a shared brand and unlock larger campaigns, but they can also make a spontaneous pivot impossible. Ask which decisions require written approval, how long approval normally takes and what happens when the agency does not respond before a deadline.
4. Support that is actually available
List the work you need before deciding that “support” is valuable. Typical functions include:
- Concept development, character design, modeling and rigging.
- Audio setup, tracking, motion capture, stage and broadcast engineering.
- Editing, clipping, subtitling, translation and thumbnail production.
- Moderation, community management, scheduling and crisis response.
- Public relations, social promotion, sales outreach and sponsorship negotiation.
- Merchandise manufacturing, fulfillment, licensing and event production.
- Legal, accounting, tax documentation and rights administration.
For each function, ask whether it is included, optional, outsourced, limited by hours or charged against your revenue. Ask who owns the resulting files and whether you receive copies. Agencies differ dramatically in staffing and queue times; a smaller roster may offer direct attention while a larger operation may provide infrastructure but prioritize higher-profile campaigns.

Examine the contract term, renewal mechanism, exclusivity, minimum activity and termination rights. “Termination for cause” should identify the breach and cure period. “Termination for convenience” should state who may use it, the notice period and what happens to outstanding payments. Check post-exit restrictions on using your name, likeness, model, music, clips, fan Discord, mailing list and sponsor relationships. Confirm whether archived streams remain public, whether you can download source files and who controls account recovery after departure.
6. Growth model and fit
Independent growth is iterative: you test content, read analytics, collaborate selectively and reinvest in the parts that work. It is slower when you lack capital or specialist help, but your decisions remain aligned with your own audience.
An agency can coordinate a debut, cross-promote a roster, package sponsorship inventory and invest in 3D or live-event infrastructure. The same scale can introduce scheduling conflicts, shared brand rules and competition for limited production slots. Ask how new talent is promoted, how campaigns are allocated and whether performance thresholds affect access to staff or events.
What agency-scale investment can look like
Cover Corporation’s FY2022/3 investor presentation illustrates the resources a large agency can coordinate; it is an example, not a promise for every agency. Cover reported ¥13.6 billion in revenue for FY2022/3, listed 71 hololive production VTubers and reported 31 channels with more than 1 million subscribers. It also presented a calculated company metric of ¥200 million in yearly revenue per VTuber. That figure is an aggregate company calculation, not a guaranteed salary or payout for an individual talent.
The same presentation described investment in 3D modeling, 3D animation, motion-capture studios and live concerts, alongside revenue from streaming, concerts and events, merchandise and licensing. An agency can spread the cost of these capabilities across a roster and negotiate projects that would be difficult for one creator to finance. You still need to ask whether the specific opportunity is available to you, whether costs are recouped and how resulting revenue and rights are divided.

| Income source | Questions for an independent creator | Questions for an agency creator |

| Platform ads | What platform share, taxes and payment fees apply in your region? | Does the agency share the platform-defined amount or a different base? |
| Memberships, subscriptions and donations | Who handles moderation, refunds, chargebacks and tax records? | Are these included in the split, and who bears chargebacks? |
| Sponsorships | Can you negotiate directly, and are category conflicts possible? | Who approves the sponsor, negotiates terms and owns the relationship after exit? |
| Merchandise | Who funds inventory, fulfillment, returns and customer support? | Are design, manufacturing and marketing costs recouped before your share? |
| Music, events and licensing | Do you own the recordings and performance rights? | Who owns the production, territory and term of each license? |
Never compare an agency’s reported revenue with your potential take-home pay. Subtract platform deductions, taxes, production costs, agency shares, refunds and chargebacks, and check whether the figure is recurring or a one-time event. Revenue can also arrive months after the stream or sale that generated it, so cash-flow timing belongs in your budget.

Request the complete agreement, every schedule, policy and side letter before you announce a decision. YouTube advises creators considering MCNs to review fees, services, obligations, duration and termination and to remember that MCN contracts are legally binding. Apply the same discipline to a VTuber agency and obtain independent legal advice in the jurisdiction that governs the contract.
- Map every right. Create an asset list covering the avatar, name, likeness, channel, social accounts, music, merchandise, recordings, fan data and commissioned files. Mark “owned,” “licensed,” “assigned” or “unclear” for each item and require clarification of every “unclear” entry.
- Define the money base. Write the formula for gross revenue, platform-defined net revenue, approved expenses, recoupment, taxes, refunds and chargebacks. Ask for a sample statement using realistic streams, a sponsorship and a merchandise sale.
- Set reporting and audit terms. Confirm statement frequency, payment deadlines, currency, records supplied, correction procedure and how often you may audit. Find out who pays audit costs when a material underpayment is found.
- Check exclusivity. Identify covered platforms, languages, games, social channels, sponsorship categories and outside work. Ask whether you may accept personal commissions, stream privately, use another avatar or appear as yourself.
- Read activity and conduct rules. Note minimum streams, response times, travel obligations, content approvals, confidentiality, political or commercial restrictions and penalties for missed commitments. Ask whether illness, disability, family emergencies or platform outages pause obligations.
- Review term and renewal. Record the initial term, automatic-renewal notice date, renegotiation window and any probation period. Do not rely on a verbal promise that you can leave “if it does not work out.”
- Model termination. Ask who can terminate, for what reasons, with what notice and cure period. Confirm treatment of unpaid revenue, unfinished merchandise, bookings, archived content, model files, channel credentials, fan communities and sponsor contracts.
- Check dispute and confidentiality clauses. Identify governing law, venue, arbitration, legal-fee rules and information you cannot disclose after exit. Make sure confidentiality does not prevent you from reporting unlawful conduct or obtaining professional advice.
- Get promises attached to the contract. If the pitch includes a model budget, editing hours, launch advertising, events or introductions, place the deliverable, deadline and remedy in a signed schedule. Marketing language on a call is not a contractual service.
Building an independent operation without doing everything yourself
Independence does not require solitary work. You can outsource individual tasks or sign non-exclusive service agreements while retaining your character and business control. Build in this order:
- Choose an ownership-safe concept. Commission a written agreement for character design, model files, rigging, music and artwork that states the license or assignment, permitted commercial uses, revisions and delivery of source files.
- Secure accounts and records. Use a password manager, hardware-based two-factor authentication and recovery email that you control. Keep contracts, invoices, tax records, licenses and project files in redundant storage.
- Budget the minimum viable setup. Separate one-time costs such as design, modeling, rigging, tracking hardware and overlays from recurring costs such as software, editing, moderation, music licenses, accounting and internet service. Keep a cash reserve for replacement equipment and slow months.
- Define a sustainable schedule. Set streaming, editing, rest and administrative hours. Include time for moderation, sponsor deliverables, tax records and technical rehearsals; an attractive schedule that leaves no recovery time is not sustainable.
- Install rights and safety controls. Use licensed music and artwork, document permissions for guests, moderate chat consistently and create a plan for doxxing, harassment, impersonation, copyright claims and account takeover.
- Measure the work that matters. Track retention, returning viewers, membership or subscription conversion, revenue by source, production hours and contractor costs. Use those numbers to decide what to outsource instead of chasing every platform trend.
- Reinvest deliberately. Upgrade modeling, audio, editing, translation, motion capture or promotion when a measured bottleneck limits growth. Do not give away permanent IP rights merely to avoid a one-time service bill unless the long-term value is clear.
How to evaluate an agency offer
Use the same questions for every agency so a polished presentation does not hide unequal terms.
- Verify the legal entity. Confirm the contracting company, signatory authority, governing law, payment entity and tax documentation. Check who actually owns the IP and receives platform or merchandise payments.
- Ask for comparable examples. Request anonymized sample statements, delivery timelines and a description of a typical debut campaign. Treat unverifiable success claims as marketing, not evidence.
- Interview the operating team. Ask who handles production, moderation, sales, legal and crisis response, how many talents each person supports and what happens when staff are unavailable.
- Test communication. Notice whether questions receive precise written answers. Evasive replies before signing usually become slower replies after signing.
- Calculate your downside. Build a conservative budget with no viral breakout, delayed sponsorship, a canceled event and several months of low platform income. Include any equipment, travel or tax costs you still bear.
- Negotiate the non-negotiables. Prioritize ownership, account control, payment definitions, audit rights, term, termination, exclusivity and post-exit use. A small improvement in those clauses can matter more than a promised launch budget.
- Get an independent review. A lawyer familiar with creator, entertainment or intellectual-property contracts can identify assignment language, unlimited licenses, indemnities and post-exit restrictions that a general summary misses.
Which path fits common creator situations?
You already have a character and an audience
Independence is often the default because changing ownership or account control can disrupt the community you built. An agency may still be useful for a non-exclusive editing, sales, licensing or event agreement. If you consider a full agency deal, value your existing accounts, archives and audience data explicitly rather than treating them as part of a generic “debut package.”
You have strong creative skills but little production capacity
An agency can reduce the time spent coordinating modelers, editors, motion-capture operators and event crews. Compare that convenience with the share of revenue and control you surrender. A staged approach—hire a rigger, editor or producer for defined projects first—can reveal your real bottleneck without committing your character IP.

- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
You want a career built around live events and merchandise
Agency infrastructure may be valuable when concerts, licensing, manufacturing and travel are central to your plan. Confirm territories, inventory risk, event cancellation rules, rehearsal obligations, insurance and the division of performance and merchandise rights. A streaming-focused contract may not cover the event business you expect.
You need maximum privacy or an irregular schedule
Independent work offers more control over disclosure and availability, although platforms and sponsors still impose rules. Agency minimum-activity clauses, travel and coordinated launches may conflict with health, family or school commitments. Ask whether obligations can be paused and whether the agency can protect your personal identity without requiring unreasonable disclosure.
You are unsure whether VTubing will become a business
Start with a limited independent experiment or clearly scoped freelance services. Learn your preferred content, audience response, workload and monthly costs before granting exclusivity or assigning character rights. An agency can be reconsidered once you know which support you would actually use.
Protecting yourself after the decision
Keep a dated inventory of model files, account ownership, licenses, contracts, revenue statements and communications. Separate personal and creator finances, reserve money for taxes and retain copies outside any agency-controlled storage. Review platform terms whenever monetization changes; an agency cannot remove your responsibilities to the platform or tax authority.
If a dispute develops, continue meeting undisputed obligations while documenting missed payments, rejected approvals, schedule changes and service failures. Do not delete archives or transfer accounts impulsively. Follow the contract’s notice and cure process, obtain legal advice and preserve evidence before negotiating an exit.
A practical decision worksheet
Score each statement from 1 (not important or not ready) to 5 (essential or fully ready), then compare the pattern rather than adding the numbers mechanically.
| Statement | If your score is high, independence may fit | If your score is high, an agency may fit |
|---|---|---|
| I need to own and control the avatar, name and accounts. | High priority for independent control. | Accept only an agreement that preserves the required rights. |
| I can fund or manage production and administration. | High readiness for independent operations. | Lower need for agency coordination. |
| I want professional production, events or merchandise now. | Plan specific contractors and budgets. | Potential reason to seek agency infrastructure. |
| I can follow shared schedules and brand rules. | More flexibility outside an agency. | Higher tolerance for agency coordination. |
| I understand the proposed revenue formula and exit terms. | Proceed with your own business plan. | Do not sign until every blank is answered in writing. |
| I can tolerate uncertain income and company dependency. | Prepare a reserve and contingency plan. | Assess the agency’s financial and operational resilience. |
Final decision
Stay independent when control, ownership and flexibility outweigh the time and cost of running the business. Consider an agency when its specific funding, production, sales, event or roster capabilities solve a problem you can name and the contract compensates you fairly for the rights and revenue you give up. In either case, make the decision from written terms, a conservative budget and a clear exit plan—not from subscriber counts, a launch promise or a headline revenue figure.
