On December 15, 2020, Khronos and LunarG announced a Vulkan SDK update with ray-tracing tools and samples, alongside AMD and Nvidia driver support for Vulkan Ray Tracing extensions. It was a significant step toward cross-vendor ray tracing on supported PC hardware—not evidence that developers could use the public Vulkan SDK to build games for PS5 or Xbox. Console development still depends on platform-holder SDKs, APIs, drivers, and approval.
What the December 2020 announcement changed
The announcement brought together three distinct pieces: standardized Vulkan extensions, development tools, and GPU-driver support. It did not introduce a single product that independently enabled ray tracing across every device.
- Vulkan Ray Tracing extensions: Khronos had published extensions defining a standard way to access ray-tracing functionality through Vulkan, rather than relying only on vendor-specific interfaces.
- LunarG’s SDK update: The Vulkan SDK added ray-tracing tools and samples. The contemporary report also said support for Vulkan Ray Tracing was integrated into DXC, the open-source HLSL compiler.
- AMD and Nvidia drivers: Driver support made it possible to test the extensions on supported hardware from both vendors. The announcement was about enabling development and implementation, not guaranteeing that every GPU could run every ray-tracing workload.
The announcement was published on December 15, 2020. GamesBeat’s page displays a June 20, 2025 update marker, but that does not change the date or make the original announcement a 2025 development. GamesBeat’s report describes the release and its aims.
API, SDK, driver, and hardware are different layers
These terms describe separate parts of the graphics pipeline. Confusing them can make an SDK announcement sound like a console feature announcement when it is not.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- API: The interface an engine or game uses to submit graphics and compute work. Vulkan is an API; Vulkan Ray Tracing is a group of extensions that adds ray-tracing interfaces to it.
- SDK: Development components such as headers, tools, validation layers, and samples. LunarG’s public Vulkan SDK helps developers create and debug Vulkan software; it is not a console runtime.
- Driver: Vendor software that implements an API for a particular operating system and GPU. The driver must expose the required extensions and features for an application to use them.
- Hardware: The GPU capabilities that determine whether ray tracing is available and how much work it can handle. API support alone does not establish a particular level of performance.
- Console SDK: A restricted development environment provided by the platform holder, with the tools and platform integration needed to build, test, package, and submit console software.
Installing LunarG’s SDK does not install a PS5 or Xbox driver, grant access to either console’s development environment, or make a retail console a public Vulkan target.
Why PS5 and Xbox entered the conversation
PS5 and Xbox Series X/S use AMD-based GPU technology, so AMD’s PC ray-tracing support made standardized Vulkan ray tracing strategically relevant to discussions about engines that serve both PC and consoles. That is a connection to hardware lineage, not evidence of a public Vulkan implementation on either console.

A console can share architectural features with Radeon products while using its own operating system, drivers, memory model, shader compiler, and graphics API. Console developers need official Sony or Microsoft tools and platform-specific integration. The 2020 report’s console angle is best read as forward-looking commentary about shared technology and renderer portability—not as a confirmation that PS5 or Xbox games could simply be compiled with the public Vulkan SDK.
AMD PC support does not equal PS5 or Xbox SDK support. The available announcement establishes driver support for AMD and Nvidia hardware, but does not establish Vulkan Ray Tracing as a supported public game-development path for either retail console.

Vulkan Ray Tracing and DXR: different fits, not a universal winner
The 2020 announcement described Vulkan Ray Tracing as a cross-platform alternative to Microsoft’s DirectX Raytracing (DXR), and characterized its design as a carefully constructed superset of DXR. That is a description of the extensions’ intended scope, not a claim that the two APIs are identical or interchangeable.
| Consideration | Vulkan Ray Tracing | DXR |
|---|---|---|
| Platform fit | Designed for portability across vendors and operating systems where suitable Vulkan drivers and extensions are available. | Integrated with Microsoft’s DirectX ecosystem; especially relevant to Windows and Xbox development. |
| Engine fit | Can suit engines that already use Vulkan or need a portable ray-tracing backend. | Can suit projects with a mature DirectX 12 renderer and Windows/Xbox priorities. |
| Shader workflow | The 2020 announcement highlighted DXC and HLSL support as a way to share shader work. | Uses the DirectX graphics and shader tooling ecosystem. |
| What it does not remove | Need for suitable hardware, driver support, debugging, platform integration, and per-device performance work. | Need for suitable hardware, driver support, debugging, platform integration, and performance work. |
Vulkan may reduce the need to maintain wholly separate ray-tracing backends, particularly when an engine already targets Vulkan. DXR may be more practical for a project centered on Windows and Xbox with established DirectX tools. The choice depends on engine architecture, target platforms, driver maturity, debugging support, and performance; portability does not automatically make Vulkan faster or easier.

What developers still have to implement
Extensions and samples provide a foundation, not a complete production renderer. A game team still has to decide how ray tracing fits its rendering architecture, build the required resource and shader systems, and measure results on its target hardware.
- Manage acceleration structures and their updates as scene geometry changes.
- Implement ray-generation, miss, and hit shaders, along with shader binding tables and the associated resource bindings.
- Handle synchronization, resource barriers, memory allocation, and GPU-specific constraints.
- Choose which effects to trace, and add denoising or temporal reuse where the image quality and performance budget call for them.
- Provide rasterized or hybrid fallbacks for systems without the required extension support or adequate performance.
- Profile and tune on each vendor and target platform; a common API does not guarantee identical behavior or speed.
For a PC evaluation, the practical sequence is to install a current Vulkan SDK, use a driver that exposes the necessary ray-tracing features, verify that the target GPU and driver report those features, and build or run an appropriate sample with validation and diagnostic tools enabled. Test the renderer’s acceleration structures, shader stages, and synchronization, then compare its performance with rasterized or hybrid approaches. The announcement is historical; its 2020 driver releases should not be treated as current recommendations. For console builds, use the official platform SDK and implement the platform-specific renderer path.

Quake II RTX showed the promise—and cost—of the approach
Quake II RTX served as an example of a ray-traced game moving away from dependence on Nvidia-only extensions toward platform-agnostic Vulkan Ray Tracing extensions. GamesBeat reported that the game was expected to run on compatible GPUs without relying on vendor-specific extensions. Broader API compatibility did not mean universal GPU support or acceptable performance on every device.
The game was described as fully path-traced, applying ray tracing to global illumination, shadows, reflections, and ambient occlusion. In separate historical testing, GamesBeat reported roughly 70–80 frames per second at 1080p on an RTX 2080 Ti, while the original OpenGL renderer ran at frame rates in the hundreds. Those figures describe that publication’s 2019 test and a demanding game workload; they are not a general Vulkan benchmark or a comparison of current hardware. GamesBeat’s Quake II RTX coverage provides the context for those results.
Ray tracing can be especially expensive for global illumination and multiple-bounce effects. Dedicated ray-tracing hardware can offer an advantage over implementations that rely more heavily on general GPU resources, but performance varies by architecture, driver, scene, and effect. For a console budget, rasterization combined with selected ray-traced reflections, shadows, or ambient occlusion may be a more practical trade-off than full path tracing.
What the announcement means now
LunarG continues to offer a Vulkan SDK and GPU-development services. Its current company page references SDK access and a Vulkan SDK 1.4.350.0 release in its blog area, but that page alone does not confirm the exact latest downloadable version or establish Vulkan support for retail PS5 or Xbox games. LunarG’s company page describes its SDK and development work; the SDK is available from LunarG’s Vulkan SDK site.
For developers, Vulkan Ray Tracing remains a possible common API foundation on platforms whose drivers and hardware expose the needed features. For console development, that portability can inform shared engine architecture and shader work, but it does not replace platform-holder tools or integration. The 2020 announcement did not turn the public Vulkan SDK into a console development kit.
