w32time.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component, not a game file or Visual C++ runtime. If Windows reports that it is missing, not found, corrupted, or cannot be loaded, repair Windows itself rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
What this file actually does
w32time.dll implements the Windows Time service, whose service name is W32Time. It helps Windows synchronize the system clock using Windows time-service mechanisms and Network Time Protocol. Correct time is important for logging, scheduled tasks, certificates, domain authentication, and other time-dependent Windows functions.
Microsoft documents the file as part of Windows and normally installs it at:
%SystemRoot%System32W32Time.dll
The service configuration is stored under:
HKLMSYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesW32Time
Its default service DLL path is %windir%System32w32time.dll. See Microsoft’s Windows Time Service documentation and Windows Time Service tools and settings.

Causes and symptoms at a glance
| What you observe | Most likely explanation | Best starting point |
|---|---|---|
| Several programs show DLL errors | Damaged Windows files or component store | Windows Update, DISM, then SFC |
| Only one game or program fails | Damaged application files or an incorrect dependency | Repair or verify that application |
| The file is absent from System32 | Deletion, quarantine, disk damage, or Windows corruption | Security check, DISM, then SFC |
| The message says “Bad Image” | Wrong, damaged, or incompatible file or dependency | Windows servicing, not a downloaded DLL |
| Windows Time itself will not start | Service registration or configuration problem | Inspect W32Time, then use advanced repair |
| The problem began after an update or cleanup | Interrupted servicing or rollback damage | System Restore or Windows recovery |
| Antivirus recently detected the file | Quarantine or possible system compromise | Inspect Protection history and scan |
Typical messages include:
The code execution cannot proceed because w32time.dll was not found.
Reinstalling the program may fix this problem.
w32time.dll is missing from your computer.
Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.
w32time.dll - Bad Image
...either is not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.
The exact wording varies by Windows version, application, architecture, and the dependency that actually failed. A message naming w32time.dll does not always prove that the file itself is the damaged component.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
An incomplete update or upgrade can leave system files and the component store inconsistent. Start with Windows Update before replacing anything manually.
Windows 11
- Select Start.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Try the program or Windows feature again.
Windows 10
- Select Start.
- Open Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the available updates.
- Restart Windows and test again.
If the error started immediately after an upgrade and remains after updating, continue with DISM and SFC below. Microsoft’s current instructions are in Install Windows Updates.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFix 2: Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC
This is the primary repair for a missing or corrupted w32time.dll.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected Windows files and replaces damaged copies using the repaired store. Run DISM first.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to complete. It can appear stalled for a while.
- Leave the administrator Command Prompt open.
A successful result normally reports that the restore operation completed successfully. If DISM reports that the source files cannot be found, do not download w32time.dll. Continue to the recovery options later in this guide or use a matching Windows installation source.
Run SFC
In the same administrator Command Prompt, enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
The useful outcomes are:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC found no damaged protected files.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test the affected program.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Restart once, run DISM again, and repeat SFC. If it still cannot repair the file, use System Restore or Windows recovery.
Microsoft documents this order in Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files.
Repeating SFC without checking what changed can make troubleshooting unclear. If you want an optional scan that helps identify system problems while you work through these commands, Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan detects; repairs are performed by the full version, and it is not required for Microsoft’s DISM and SFC process.
Perform a targeted SFC check
If Windows reports a problem specifically with the file, Microsoft documents a file-specific verification command:

sfc /verifyfile=C:WindowsSystem32w32time.dll
This checks the specified protected file but does not necessarily repair it. The normal repair command remains:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →sfc /scannow
Microsoft’s System File Checker reference documents the file-specific syntax.
Fix 3: Check the file path and Windows architecture
Do not copy files between System32 and SysWOW64 based only on their names.
On 64-bit Windows:
%windir%System32contains 64-bit system files.- 32-bit processes can be redirected to
%windir%SysWOW64, where applicable.
The names are confusing, but the folders serve different purposes. Microsoft explains this behavior in File System Redirector.
To check whether Windows can locate the file:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run:
where w32time.dll
- Check the normal Windows location:
dir %windir%System32w32time.dll
If the file is present in the expected location but an application still reports it as missing, the issue may be a dependency, application architecture problem, damaged component store, or incorrect service configuration. Do not assume that copying another copy over it will help.

File versions and sizes vary by Windows release, servicing level, edition, architecture, and language. There is no single version or file size that is correct for every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation.
Fix 4: Determine whether only one application is affected
If Windows works normally and only one application reports w32time.dll, repair that application before changing Windows service settings.
Repair a Windows 11 application
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
The Repair option may not exist for every program.
Repair a traditional desktop program
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select the affected program.
- Select Repair or Change, if available.
- Follow the installer’s instructions.
- Restart the program.
For a game or launcher, use its official Verify, Repair, or Scan and repair function. If that does not help, reinstall the application from its official publisher or launcher. A program-specific reinstall is appropriate when only that program fails, but it is not a substitute for repairing Windows when many programs report DLL errors.
Microsoft’s general instructions are in Repair apps and programs in Windows.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine and scan for malware
Security software may quarantine a system file. Do not restore it blindly, and do not disable antivirus protection just to make the error disappear.

In Windows Security:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Inspect recent detections and quarantined items.
- Check the reported path, detection name, and file details.
- Restore the item only after confirming that it is the genuine Windows file and that the detection was incorrect.
- Run a full scan afterward.
Microsoft documents the process in Restore quarantined files from Microsoft Defender Antivirus.
If the file was replaced or removed by malware, restoring one DLL may not solve the underlying problem. Run a full security scan and then run DISM and SFC. If compromise is suspected, disconnect from sensitive accounts and use Microsoft’s recovery options for Windows.
Fix 6: Check the Windows Time service
A missing-DLL loader message and a broken Windows Time service are different problems. Check the service only after repairing Windows files, or when the error specifically concerns clock synchronization.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteOpen an administrator Command Prompt and run:
sc qc w32time
This displays the service configuration. You can also inspect the current time-service state with:
w32tm /query /configuration
w32tm /query /status
Microsoft identifies w32tm.exe as the preferred command-line tool for configuring and troubleshooting Windows Time. See the W32tm command reference.
If the service registration is damaged, an administrator can rebuild it:
net stop w32time
w32tm.exe /unregister
w32tm.exe /register
net start w32time
Run each command separately and note any error. This procedure removes the existing W32Time configuration and restores default service settings when the service is registered again. It can therefore remove customized time-server or domain settings. Microsoft explains this limitation in Windows Time Service troubleshooting.
Do not use this procedure merely because an application says w32time.dll is missing. It repairs service registration, not a deleted or corrupted Windows file.
Fix 7: Repair Windows after a failed update or upgrade
If the problem began after Windows Update, a feature upgrade, a cleanup utility, or a failed repair, System Restore may return Windows to a working state.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
- Test the affected program.
System Restore does not normally remove personal documents, but it can roll back drivers, applications, updates, and system settings. Microsoft’s instructions are in System Restore.

On Windows 11, an additional option may be available:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now, if shown.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings when the option is available. See Microsoft’s Windows Update reinstall guidance.
If DISM cannot find source files and Windows Update repair is unavailable, use matching Windows installation media or proceed with Microsoft’s recovery options. Do not substitute an arbitrary DLL.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 8: Investigate drivers only when the timing points to one
A graphics, storage, security, or chipset driver is not the owner of w32time.dll, but a failed driver installation can damage system servicing or cause one application to fail.
Use Device Manager to inspect recently changed devices:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Check the driver provider, date, and status.
- Use Roll Back Driver if the problem began immediately after an update and the button is available.
- Otherwise select Update Driver or obtain the driver from the device manufacturer.
Do not remove a working driver simply because the DLL error mentions w32time.dll. Driver repair is relevant when the Windows or application failure began directly after a driver change.
When several devices have stale or mismatched drivers, manually identifying the correct package can involve checking hardware IDs, manufacturers, and Windows compatibility. Outbyte Driver Updater can show what its free scan identifies; driver installation is performed by the full version, and it is optional rather than a required fix for this Windows DLL.
Why you should not download w32time.dll
Avoid DLL download sites and random file attachments. A downloaded copy can be:
- The wrong Windows build
- The wrong architecture
- Modified or infected
- Missing a required digital signature
- Incompatible with the component store
- Unable to fix the service registration or dependency that caused the error
Do not copy a downloaded file into System32 or SysWOW64. Do not copy it from another computer unless you are performing an advanced, build-matched Windows repair and can verify its authenticity and provenance.

Why regsvr32 is normally wrong here
Do not run:
regsvr32 w32time.dll
as a routine repair. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points, commonly COM or ActiveX components. W32Time is loaded as a Windows service DLL through service configuration, so registering it does not replace a missing file or repair Windows component corruption.

Why Visual C++ Redistributables will not normally help
w32time.dll is a Windows Time service component, not a Visual C++ runtime file. Installing vc_redist.x86.exe or vc_redist.x64.exe is appropriate for errors naming files such as MSVCP140.dll or VCRUNTIME140.dll, not normally for w32time.dll.
Likewise, reinstalling DirectX or .NET is not the standard repair for this filename. First identify the component named in the actual error and then use the repair path for that component.
Frequently asked questions
Is w32time.dll safe?
Yes, the genuine file is a Microsoft Windows component implementing the Windows Time service. Its expected location is normally %windir%System32. Location, signature, and Windows servicing health matter more than a filename alone.
Is w32time.dll required by a specific game?
There is no general basis for treating it as a game runtime. If one game reports it, repair or verify the game, but also check Windows with DISM and SFC if other programs are affected.
Should I install Visual C++ to fix it?
No, not for a normal w32time.dll error. Visual C++ packages repair Visual C++ runtime files, not this Windows service DLL.
Should I use System32 or SysWOW64?
Do not choose manually based on the folder name. Windows handles redirection for 32-bit processes on 64-bit systems. Restore the component through Windows servicing instead of copying files between folders.
How can I tell whether the service or the file is broken?
A loader message naming w32time.dll points toward a file, dependency, or component-store problem. A service error involving clock synchronization points toward W32Time configuration. Use sc qc w32time, w32tm /query, DISM, and SFC to separate these cases.
What if SFC and DISM do not fix it?
Install pending updates, restart, and repeat the documented DISM-before-SFC sequence once. If the issue began after a known change, use System Restore. If DISM cannot locate source files or Windows remains broadly damaged, use Windows 11’s repair reinstall when available, matching installation media, or Microsoft’s recovery options.
Can I replace the file manually?
Only as an advanced last-resort Windows repair using a verified file from the same Windows build and architecture. A random replacement is unsafe and can leave Windows with a mismatched system component.
