Waiting for Kingdom Hearts IV? Duskfade Brings Fast, Emotional Action

Yes—Duskfade is a sensible game to play while you wait for Kingdom Hearts IV, provided you want an action-platformer rather than a substitute for Kingdom Hearts. Its designers explicitly cite Kingdom Hearts as one influence on combat, while the finished game puts equal weight on jumping, dashing, grappling, gliding, exploration and a grief-driven story. Duskfade released on Steam on August 13, 2026, and a digital Nintendo Switch 2 edition is listed by Nintendo. Square Enix currently places Kingdom Hearts IV in a late-2027 window, so Duskfade can fill the gap with a complete, available adventure without pretending the two games are interchangeable.

What Duskfade is—and why it fits a Kingdom Hearts waiting list

Duskfade is a 3D action-platformer from developer Weird Beluga and publisher Fireshine Games. Steam lists its release date as August 13, 2026. You play as Zirian, moving through different realms while trying to save his sister. The official description foregrounds speed and physical movement: you jump, dash, grapple and glide as you explore, then use fast-paced combat when enemies block your route.

That combination matters for Kingdom Hearts fans. Kingdom Hearts is often remembered for its real-time battles, but its appeal also comes from moving through colorful spaces, uncovering story scenes and controlling a character who can chain attacks and movement into a continuous flow. Duskfade approaches that same broad pleasure from the platformer side. Traversal is not a short transition between fights; it is one of the central activities.

The recommendation is therefore about overlapping priorities rather than a one-to-one replacement. Duskfade has its own world, characters, controls and narrative goals. If what you miss is the sensation of an agile hero moving through a stylized world and fighting in real time, it is a strong interim choice. If you need Disney worlds, the Kingdom Hearts cast or the specific structure of a Kingdom Hearts action-RPG, only Kingdom Hearts IV can provide that.

The Kingdom Hearts connection is documented, not wishful thinking

The comparison has a direct development source. In a PlayStation Blog interview, game designer Esteban Marin Illana said:

“The combat in Duskfade takes cues from games like Ratchet & Clank and Kingdom Hearts, with additional mechanics inspired by contemporary action games, like a responsive dodge roll, layered in to add depth and keep the action feeling fresh and dynamic.”

That statement establishes Kingdom Hearts as one combat touchstone, not the sole template. The same interview describes a broader movement lineage. Lead programmer Tomás Manzano Sobrido said:

“Our game takes inspiration from Jak and Daxter and Ratchet & Clank, with movement that has been designed to feel agile and fast. Flow is a core focus, and we want players to feel like Zirian is gliding through the world, chaining actions seamlessly and covering large distances without losing momentum.”

Those comments explain why the game may appeal to a Kingdom Hearts audience while still feeling different in the hands. Duskfade’s identity comes from combining platforming verbs with combat. The dodge roll adds a contemporary action-game response, while grappling and gliding give you ways to preserve momentum across larger spaces. The intended rhythm is not simply “enter arena, defeat enemies, leave”; it is movement, positioning, improvisation and exploration woven together.

Duskfade and Kingdom Hearts IV: what actually overlaps

Question Duskfade Kingdom Hearts IV
Genre emphasis Officially presented as a 3D action-platformer. Officially announced as an action-RPG.
What you do moment to moment Jump, dash, grapple and glide through realms; explore and fight in fast-paced encounters. Specific moment-to-moment systems have not been fully detailed in the cited announcement.
Combat influence Designer Esteban Marin Illana names Kingdom Hearts alongside Ratchet & Clank, plus a responsive dodge roll inspired by modern action games. Its own combat design is still being presented by Square Enix ahead of release.
Story premise Zirian searches the realms for his sister; the narrative is shaped by loss, memory and grief. Story details remain limited in the cited release-window announcement.
Availability Released on Steam on August 13, 2026; Nintendo lists a digital Switch 2 edition. Planned for late 2027 on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, subject to change.

The table is also a warning against overpromising. Kingdom Hearts IV’s announcement confirms its genre and platforms, but it does not establish that its movement, progression or combat will match Duskfade’s. Conversely, Duskfade’s developers have explained their influences, but that does not make Duskfade a Kingdom Hearts side story or a replacement for the series’ characters and mythology.

A different emotional center: loss instead of crossover spectacle

Duskfade’s story follows Zirian’s attempt to save his sister, and the developers frame that journey through memory and grief. Narrative designer Ricardo Chorques Mesa connected the premise to the experience of losing a guide and role model. That gives the adventure a more intimate starting point than the crossover appeal associated with Kingdom Hearts.

Expect the emotional stakes to come from a sibling relationship and the meaning of absence, not from revisiting established Disney or Square Enix worlds. This distinction is useful when deciding whether to buy now. Players who want another heartfelt quest with a clear personal objective may find the premise compelling. Players who are specifically waiting to see how Kingdom Hearts IV advances Sora’s story should treat Duskfade as a separate story, not preparation that will explain the next Kingdom Hearts chapter.

Where you can play Duskfade now

PC through Steam

Steam lists Duskfade as released on August 13, 2026, with Weird Beluga as developer and Fireshine Games as publisher. The live store page is the appropriate place to check the current PC system requirements, supported features and any updates before installing. Requirements and storefront information can change, so use the listing’s present specifications rather than relying on an old preview.

Nintendo Switch 2

Nintendo’s official US store listing identifies a digital Nintendo Switch 2 edition. The listing should not be read as confirmation of a physical cartridge, and it does not establish Amazon inventory. If you prefer a boxed copy, verify that a physical edition has actually been announced and is in stock before paying a reseller premium.

Other consoles

Earlier 2025 promotional coverage discussed console plans, but those plans were projections made before the live Steam release and the current Nintendo listing. The confirmed information available here is the released Steam version and Nintendo’s digital Switch 2 listing. Check a platform holder’s current store page for any additional edition rather than assuming that a previously mentioned target has launched.

How the wait for Kingdom Hearts IV affects the choice

Square Enix’s August 16, 2026 announcement gives Kingdom Hearts IV a late-2027 release window and names Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. “Late 2027” is a window, not a guaranteed day, and release plans can move. That leaves a substantial period in which Duskfade can be played on its existing platforms.

The timing makes Duskfade especially practical for three kinds of players:

  • You want a new game now. Duskfade is already released on Steam, so you are not buying into another wait list.
  • You miss kinetic, real-time action. Its combat influence and movement design directly address that desire, while the grapple and glide systems add platforming decisions.
  • You prefer a self-contained premise. Zirian’s search for his sister gives the game a focused objective instead of asking you to remember a long-running crossover plot.

It is a weaker fit if your priority is the Kingdom Hearts universe itself. Duskfade cannot supply Sora, the established supporting cast, Disney settings or continuity with the previous numbered entries. The more specific your wishlist is, the less useful a genre comparison becomes.

What to expect from Duskfade’s movement and combat

Traversal is a primary system

The official description lists four key actions—jumping, dashing, grappling and gliding. Together they suggest that route choice and momentum are important parts of play. Manzano Sobrido’s description of chaining actions and covering large distances indicates an emphasis on keeping Zirian moving rather than treating each ability as an isolated button press.

That design can appeal to players who enjoy the feeling of clearing a gap, reaching a higher path or crossing a realm without stopping. It also means the game may demand more spatial attention than a combat-first action RPG. Watch the environment, learn where movement tools connect and use the dodge roll to reposition instead of waiting passively for an opening.

Combat borrows a feeling, not a formula

Illana’s wording is precise: Kingdom Hearts is one of several cues. The additional dodge-roll mechanic points to a combat system that expects active defense and quick reactions. You should approach fights ready to move, evade and continue your attack flow, but you should not assume that Kingdom Hearts commands, abilities or progression systems map directly onto Duskfade’s controls.

Because the game is built around exploration and platforming as well as fighting, its best moments may come from how those systems interact. A movement route can change your position before a battle; an evasive action can preserve momentum; and reaching a new area can be as satisfying as clearing its enemies. Those are the qualities to look for if your favorite Kingdom Hearts sessions involve movement between story scenes as much as the battles themselves.

Planned extras: the artbook is not available by default

Weird Beluga has announced a Duskfade artbook in physical and digital formats, with release planned before the end of 2026. That is a forthcoming project, not proof that the book has already been published or that a retailer has stock. Treat it as a possible companion for fans who enjoy concept art, and verify publication status and availability before ordering.

A developer Steam news post also mentions a soundtrack add-on. The available information does not establish a physical soundtrack, so do not assume that a boxed music release exists.

A practical decision guide

  1. Identify the part of Kingdom Hearts you miss. If it is fast combat and expressive movement, Duskfade addresses that need. If it is the characters and crossover worlds, wait for Kingdom Hearts IV.
  2. Choose your platform from confirmed listings. Use Steam for the released PC version or Nintendo’s official store for the digital Switch 2 edition. Check the live store page for current requirements and edition details.
  3. Set the story expectation. Duskfade is a sibling-rescue story shaped by loss and memory, not a Kingdom Hearts continuation.
  4. Decide whether platforming sounds appealing. Jumping, dashing, grappling and gliding are core activities, so this is not merely a combat substitute.
  5. Recheck future products before buying. The artbook is planned for before the end of 2026, while Kingdom Hearts IV is targeted for late 2027; neither date guarantees a specific retail release day.

Duskfade earns its place on a Kingdom Hearts IV waiting list because its creators openly drew from Kingdom Hearts combat while building a distinct action-platformer around momentum, exploration and grief. Play it for that shared energy, not for a promise that it will recreate the Kingdom Hearts formula.
