Walmart’s January 2024 announcement with Unity described a way for players to buy real, physical products without leaving a game, virtual world, or app built with Unity. The integration was framed as a native SDK connected to Walmart’s commerce APIs, with developers also able to earn affiliate commissions on some resulting purchases. As of the most recent Walmart statement located (October 9, 2024), the APIs were entering alpha testing with Unity. Whether the SDK is open to developers today, in which regions, and on which Unity versions is not settled by the public record and needs to be checked directly with Unity and Walmart before any build plans are made.

What Walmart and Unity announced

On January 4, 2024, Walmart announced plans to give Unity developers a way to integrate Walmart commerce APIs directly into games and apps. The stated goal was to let creators sell physical items inside real-time 3D experiences. Walmart described the method as an official Unity Software Development Kit, and said the purchase flow would let players buy physical goods without leaving the experience they were in.

The announcement also described a monetization angle for developers. Walmart said creators could receive affiliate commissions from certain physical purchases made through the integration. It did not publish a commission rate, a cookie duration, or the detailed rules that determine which purchases qualify. Those terms are the first thing a studio would need to see in writing before treating the integration as a revenue line.

How Walmart framed the integration

Walmart presented the work as a way to connect customers’ virtual and physical lives, with in-game commerce serving as a new engagement and monetization mechanism for Unity-built experiences. Tom Kang, vice president and general manager of Metaverse Commerce at Walmart’s Store No. 8, said: “By opening up Walmart’s commerce APIs to the Unity development community, we’re empowering developers to offer a new mechanism to further drive user engagement while making it easy and convenient for players to complete a transaction for physical products without leaving the game, virtual world or app.”

Marc Whitten, president of Create at Unity, said: “This announcement paves the way for new innovation in commerce for games and other virtual experiences.”

The framing is worth noting for what it emphasizes. The pitch is about reducing friction between a player’s in-world desire and a real checkout, rather than about in-game currencies or digital items. That makes the product category and the checkout experience the core questions, not the virtual economy.

The pilots that came before the announcement

Walmart said it had tested immersive commerce in online worlds during the year before the announcement, and named three Unity-made experiences as the proving ground.

House Flip

In House Flip, players could buy the real-world counterparts of virtual home items. Walmart’s examples included Glidden paint, home decor from Mainstays and Better Homes and Gardens, and a Holiday Time Christmas tree. This is the clearest example of a virtual object mapping to a physical product on a one-to-one basis.

A separate Walmart article from September 2023 reported that House Flip had generated more than 12 million impressions for Glidden during the first six months of its virtual paint experience. This is a company-reported engagement figure from Walmart, 2023. It is not a sales result, and it was produced by the earlier pilot rather than by the later SDK.

Avakin Life

In Avakin Life, Walmart described virtual twins of apparel and a virtual clothing line, linking clothing that players could wear in the game to clothing sold at Walmart. The model here is avatar fashion rather than home goods.

ZEPETO

In ZEPETO, Walmart described brand placements and said it was working toward immersive commerce in selected spaces for future brand integrations. Of the three pilots, this is the least specified in the announcement, and it reads more as a stated direction than a completed format.

Timeline: from announcement to alpha

The public record is thin on dates after January 2024, so the table below lists each dated statement and what it does and does not establish.

Date Source What it says What it does not establish
September 2023 Walmart article House Flip generated more than 12 million impressions for Glidden in its first six months of virtual paint Any sales, conversion, or link to the later SDK
January 4, 2024 Walmart announcement with Unity Plans for Unity developers to integrate Walmart commerce APIs and sell physical goods in games and apps; official Unity SDK; affiliate commissions on certain purchases Commission rates, cookie duration, qualifying-purchase rules, or a launch date
October 9, 2024 Walmart statement Immersive Commerce APIs entering alpha testing with Unity General availability, enrollment process, or current status
Undated (interest page) Unity developer interest page Planned SDK targets mobile and web in the U.S., beginning with Unity LTS 2021.3 or later; invites developers to express interest Whether enrollment is open or when the SDK ships
Undated (listing) Unity Asset Store listing SDK described as available in open early access, with documentation, setup guides, and sample projects Which stage this reflects, or whether it has since changed

What is and is not established about availability

The sources do not agree on a single description of availability, and they are not dated consistently. Developers should treat the following as the current state of the public record:

  • Established: Walmart and Unity announced the plan in January 2024, and Walmart stated in October 2024 that the APIs were entering alpha testing with Unity.
  • Described by Unity: a mobile and web target in the U.S., with Unity LTS 2021.3 or later.
  • Described by the Asset Store listing: open early access with documentation and sample projects.
  • Not established: general availability, enrollment criteria, countries beyond the U.S., commercial contract terms, or the commission rates and eligibility rules promised in the announcement.

The announcement’s reference to physical items being sold across “20+ platforms” describes the 2024 scope Walmart put forward. It should not be read as confirmation that the SDK runs on every one of those platforms today.

Figures Walmart used in the announcement

Walmart’s January 2024 announcement cited Unity’s scale: more than 1.1 million developers using the editor monthly, and Made With Unity apps averaging 3.6 billion downloads per month worldwide. These are Walmart’s figures as published in 2024, and they describe Unity’s reach, not the commerce performance of the integration.

What developers should verify before building

Because the public record stops at an alpha stage in October 2024, a studio evaluating the integration should confirm the following with official developer documentation before committing engineering time:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

  1. Current SDK status: whether enrollment is open, closed, or limited to invited partners, and whether the SDK is still described as early access.
  2. Supported Unity versions, starting from the LTS 2021.3 requirement Unity published, and any newer requirements.
  3. Supported platforms and regions, including whether the U.S. focus Unity described still applies.
  4. Catalog rules: which Walmart products can be surfaced, how inventory and pricing are refreshed, and whether a product must map to a virtual item.
  5. Checkout behavior: where the purchase happens, what account or payment data is required, and how the flow appears on each platform.
  6. Privacy and account linking: what player data is shared with Walmart and how accounts are connected.
  7. Affiliate terms: commission rates, cookie windows, qualifying purchases, reporting, and payout schedule.
  8. Support and fulfillment: who handles returns, shipping problems, and customer service for purchases made inside a game.

Limits of the evidence

Most of what is publicly available about this integration comes from Walmart and Unity, the two companies promoting it. It documents their announcement, their chosen use cases, and the development stage they stated. It does not provide independent evidence of player adoption, sales, conversion, player sentiment, or profitability for developers. The only quantified pilot result is Walmart’s impression figure for Glidden, and it describes engagement rather than purchases.

No competing commerce SDK or product comparison is established by these sources, and no commission rate or fulfillment performance can be compared. Readers evaluating the opportunity should treat the announced capability as the starting point and the current developer terms as the deciding factor.

For a developer, the relevant product question is not which physical item to feature. Walmart’s examples of paint, decor, apparel, and a Christmas tree show the categories the company tested, but they do not establish a product a studio should stock or promote.
