For most players, start with Warcraft III: Reforged. Its campaign package runs to more than 60 missions, its four races use hero-led armies, and its current multiplayer includes matchmaking, ranked progression and player-created games. Choose Warcraft I and II Remastered first if you want to experience the earliest Orcs-and-Humans story, prefer simpler foundational systems, or specifically want Warcraft II’s surviving multiplayer and legacy custom maps.
The choice is less about which game is universally better than which era of real-time strategy you want: Warcraft I and II preserve the texture of early PC strategy while removing much of its friction; Warcraft III is the broader, more character-driven and more contemporary package.

| The earliest Warcraft story | Warcraft I and II Remastered | You follow the original Orcs-and-Humans conflict before Warcraft III changes the scale and structure of the series. |

What is actually included in each choice?
Warcraft I and II Remastered
This is a paired package rather than a single rebuilt campaign. It gives you the first two Warcraft strategy games, with their early campaign structure and skirmish traditions presented through updated graphics and interface work. Warcraft I centers on the Orcs-and-Humans conflict, with faction campaigns and custom skirmish games. Warcraft II supplies the more developed early-era experience and, importantly for returning players, retains multiplayer functionality.

The remaster approach is deliberately conservative. Blizzard says players can switch between the original graphics and the remastered versions in real time. That makes the package useful both as a historical record and as a playable modernized edition: you can see what changed without leaving a mission or loading a separate version.

Warcraft III: Reforged
Warcraft III: Reforged combines Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and The Frozen Throne. Blizzard’s launch announcement describes a single-player campaign spanning over 60 missions. The story is more character-led than the first two games, and the strategic identity is built around four playable races: Human, Orc, Undead and Night Elf.
Reforged is also the more service-oriented game. Its current feature set includes contemporary matchmaking and social functions, ranked systems, replays and player-created games. Patch 2.0, dated November 13, 2024, added Classic HD assets, a Reforged/Classic HD presentation toggle, customizable hotkeys, replay and search improvements, ranked XP and leveling, and additional multiplayer options.
Campaign scale and story order
Why Warcraft III is the larger campaign commitment
Warcraft III offers the broadest single-player package of the two options. More than 60 missions cover both Reign of Chaos and The Frozen Throne, giving the campaign room for multiple protagonists, faction viewpoints and mission types. Heroes remain central between battles, so the story is not only about producing workers and armies; it also follows named characters whose abilities and progression affect how missions are played.
In 2026, Blizzard added the Forsaken Kingdom campaign. It contains a prologue, three campaign chapters and a neutral Forsaken Paladin hero. Existing Reforged owners receive the Definitive Edition update at no additional cost according to Blizzard’s announcement. This makes Warcraft III the living option if you want new official campaign content attached to the modern release rather than only the original historical material.
Why begin with Warcraft I and II
The first two games show the conflict before Warcraft III’s hero-focused design and expanded faction identity. Their campaigns are valuable if you care about how the setting and its RTS conventions began, or if you prefer missions where the strategic problem is more directly about gathering resources, establishing a base and controlling an army.
Playing them first is not a requirement for understanding Warcraft III. Warcraft III presents its own campaign arc and can function as a standalone introduction. The benefit of starting with Warcraft I and II is context: locations, factions and the long-running conflict have an earlier foundation, and the contrast makes Warcraft III’s cinematic and character-driven approach more noticeable.

How the controls and interface differ
Warcraft I receives the biggest usability lift
Warcraft I was designed around older PC strategy conventions, so its remaster changes are especially noticeable. Modern controls include right-click movement, band-box selection and faster game speed. These reduce the amount of interface friction between deciding what a unit should do and issuing the order.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Both Warcraft I and II receive shared interface improvements: tooltips, health bars, a mission-select screen and increased unit selection. The result is still recognizably early Warcraft, but you spend less time fighting the original presentation. The real-time graphics switch is useful here because it lets you judge the visual update in the exact mission and scene where you notice it.
Warcraft III favors customization and information density
Warcraft III already had a more advanced control model, and Reforged’s recent updates focus on adapting it to current expectations. Patch 2.0 added customizable hotkeys and updated HUD options alongside replay and search improvements. Players who want to tune keyboard commands or organize a competitive routine have more room to do so than in the earlier games.
The strategic cost of that convenience is complexity. Warcraft III asks you to track heroes, abilities, cooldowns and faction-specific tools in addition to workers, production and army positioning. A beginner can learn it, but the game has more systems competing for attention during a battle.
Gameplay: foundational armies versus hero-led factions
What Warcraft I and II feel like
The remastered first two games are the choice for a more direct RTS loop. You build an economy, construct production, research what is available and move armies through missions or skirmishes. The early design is less layered than Warcraft III, so the important questions are often immediate: where to establish a base, which units to produce and how to keep an army supplied while you expand.

What Warcraft III adds
Warcraft III’s four races—Human, Orc, Undead and Night Elf—give the campaign and multiplayer a wider strategic vocabulary. Heroes create a second layer of decision-making: you must decide where to send them, which abilities to use and how to support them with regular units. Missions can therefore be structured around a character, an ability or a special objective rather than only around destroying an opposing base.
This makes Warcraft III feel more like a modern strategy game, but it raises the learning curve. New players should expect to learn a faction’s economy and unit roles while also learning how to keep a hero alive and effective. If you find that appealing, the additional systems are the reason to choose Warcraft III rather than a drawback.
Multiplayer, ranked play and custom maps
Warcraft II: the legacy option
Warcraft II retains multiplayer functionality in the remastered package. Blizzard also says all legacy custom maps remain compatible and playable. That combination matters to long-time players: existing scenarios and community-made formats are part of the reason to return, not merely an archival extra.

Warcraft III: the active online ecosystem
Warcraft III offers matchmaking, ranked systems and player-created games. Patch 2.0 added ranked XP and leveling, as well as replay and search improvements and additional multiplayer options. Those features make it the stronger choice for someone who wants a contemporary way to find opponents, track progress or browse community-made experiences.
Custom games are a major part of Warcraft III’s identity. The player-created ecosystem is broader than a conventional list of developer-authored skirmish maps, so the online experience can vary substantially by mode and community. If you want a polished campaign and a large selection of user-made games in one package, Reforged is the more complete fit.

What changed in Warcraft III after patch 2.0?
Patch 2.0 was released on November 13, 2024. Its changes are practical rather than a new numbered game:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Classic HD assets: A higher-definition presentation option for players who want updated art while retaining a classic visual direction.
- Reforged/Classic HD toggle: You can choose the presentation mode rather than being locked to one visual treatment.
- Customizable hotkeys: Keyboard controls can be adapted to personal layouts and accessibility preferences.
- Replay and search improvements: Finding and reviewing games is more useful for players who study matches or return to old sessions.
- Ranked XP and leveling: Online progression now has a clearer experience and level structure.
- Additional multiplayer options: The online feature set is broader than the launch configuration.
These updates make Reforged a more defensible recommendation for a new player than its launch state alone would suggest. They do not turn Warcraft III into Warcraft I or II: its hero mechanics, four-race structure and campaign scale remain the defining experience.

Pick Warcraft III if you want guidance and variety
For most beginners, Warcraft III is the safer first purchase because the campaign supplies a large sequence of missions and introduces its factions through characters and story. The modern interface, customizable hotkeys and current matchmaking also reduce the chance that a new player will outgrow the package immediately.
Begin with the campaign rather than jumping straight into ranked play. Learn one faction’s worker economy, basic production and hero abilities before testing competitive modes. The campaign’s mission variety gives you a practical route through those systems without requiring you to understand every matchup on the first day.
Pick Warcraft I and II if you want fewer systems at once
The older games can be the better beginner choice when “beginner” means “new to classic RTS design” rather than “new to Warcraft.” Their foundational loop is easier to describe and, after the remaster controls are enabled, less cumbersome than the original releases. Warcraft I’s right-click movement, band-box selection and faster speed are particularly important if you are curious about the first game but do not want to tolerate all of its historical interface limitations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStart with Warcraft II if Warcraft I feels too austere. Move to Warcraft I afterward for historical context. This is not the chronological route, but it lets you learn the earlier design through the more developed of the two games before confronting Warcraft I’s older structure.

Do you need to play Warcraft I and II before Warcraft III?
No. Warcraft III can be your first Warcraft strategy game. Its campaign is substantial enough to introduce its own conflict, factions and characters, and its four-race design does not require you to master the first two games beforehand.
Play Warcraft I and II first only when the earlier history is part of your goal. The chronological route adds context, but it also asks you to adjust to older mission and interface conventions before reaching the more modern game. For a first-time player who mainly wants to know whether Warcraft’s RTS design is enjoyable, Warcraft III is the more efficient test.
Access, editions and what is not established
Blizzard currently lists Warcraft I and II Remastered and Warcraft III: Reforged as PC titles available through PC Game Pass, and its anniversary announcement describes a Warcraft Battle Chest containing all three games. Availability can depend on the service and region. Blizzard does not list regional prices or physical stock in the cited information, so check the current listing in your market before buying.
The cited product information describes digital PC access. No physical edition, console version or unrelated merchandise is identified in that information.
A practical decision checklist
- Choose Warcraft III: Reforged if you want the broadest campaign, named heroes, four races, ranked progression, matchmaking or player-created games.
- Choose Warcraft I and II Remastered if your priority is the earliest story, a simpler RTS structure or Warcraft II’s retained multiplayer and legacy maps.
- Choose the paired remasters if seeing original and updated artwork side by side is part of the appeal.
- Choose Reforged if customizable hotkeys, replay tools and the post-2.0 online layer matter to you.
- Start with Warcraft III unless chronological order itself is the reason you are playing.
Final recommendation
For a single starting point, Warcraft III: Reforged is the best choice for most readers. Its more than 60-mission campaign, four playable races, hero-driven design, modern matchmaking, ranked progression and custom-game ecosystem provide the most complete package, and the 2024 patch 2.0 improvements plus the 2026 Forsaken Kingdom campaign give the current release more to do.
Warcraft I and II Remastered are the better first pick for a specific kind of player: someone who wants Warcraft’s origins, values the feel of early RTS games, or intends to revisit Warcraft II’s multiplayer and legacy custom maps. They are not prerequisites for Warcraft III, but they are the route to take when the history of the series is the point.
