Both games let you switch between the original and remastered graphics in real time. Warcraft I gains right-click movement, box selection, and faster game speed. Both games get interface updates, and Warcraft II keeps its multiplayer mode and its compatibility with legacy custom maps.
“Shadow-dropped” is the label for a release that arrives without a lead-up. That is the framing this article uses for the November 2024 launch, which Blizzard announced alongside its anniversary coverage.
What Blizzard released and when
Blizzard’s November 13, 2024 announcement confirmed both remasters as released. The two games are separate products, and the remasters do not replace each other or merge into one package. Blizzard also points to a Battle Chest bundle that contains Warcraft I, Warcraft II, and Warcraft III: Reforged. Blizzard’s announcement does not give pricing for the standalone games or the bundle, so any price you see should be checked against the store page at the time you buy.
Switching between original and remastered graphics
Both remasters let you change between the original art and the remastered art while you play. Blizzard’s announcement puts it plainly: “Players will be able to switch between the original graphics and the remastered versions in real time.” Because the switch is part of the game rather than a separate version, you can compare how a scene looks before and after the update without restarting a mission.

What changed in each game
The table below separates what Blizzard listed for each game. Where Blizzard described a change only in general terms, the cell says so rather than inferring a specific feature.
| Change | Warcraft I: Remastered | Warcraft II: Remastered |
|---|---|---|
| Updated visuals | Updated hand-painted art and widescreen battles, per a later Blizzard game description | Vivid new visuals, per the same later Blizzard description |
| Right-click movement | Added (Blizzard’s November 13, 2024 announcement) | Not itemized in Blizzard’s announcement or availability listing |
| Box selection | Added (November 13, 2024 announcement) | Not itemized in Blizzard’s announcement or availability listing |
| Faster game speed | Added (November 13, 2024 announcement) | Not itemized in Blizzard’s announcement or availability listing |
| Modernized controls | Covered by the specific control additions above | Described by Blizzard in its later availability listing, without a list of individual controls |
| Tooltips | Added (November 13, 2024 announcement) | Added (November 13, 2024 announcement) |
| Health bars | Added (November 13, 2024 announcement) | Added (November 13, 2024 announcement) |
| Mission select screen | Added (November 13, 2024 announcement) | Added (November 13, 2024 announcement) |
| Increased unit selection | Added (November 13, 2024 announcement) | Added (November 13, 2024 announcement) |
| Multiplayer | Not stated in the announcement | Retained (November 13, 2024 announcement) |
| Legacy custom maps | Not stated in the announcement | Compatible and playable (November 13, 2024 announcement) |
The practical difference is in control. Warcraft I’s remaster is the one with specific, named control additions: right-click movement, box selection, and a faster game speed setting. Warcraft II’s changes are mostly interface and presentation work, plus the modernized controls Blizzard mentions without listing.
Multiplayer and custom maps in Warcraft II
Blizzard’s announcement says Warcraft II keeps its multiplayer functionality and that legacy custom maps remain fully compatible and playable. Those are statements about the game’s design, not promises about how the service will run in the future. Blizzard does not guarantee server uptime, matchmaking availability, or behavior on every modern PC configuration, and the announcement does not claim any of those things. If you plan to rely on multiplayer or a particular custom map, check that it still loads on your system before you commit to a long session.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Availability and what remains unsettled
A later Blizzard availability page lists both remasters as PC games and says they are available through PC Game Pass and Game Pass Ultimate. That listing does not show a publication date, so treat it as the most recent Blizzard description rather than a dated snapshot. Subscription eligibility can change, and so can regional storefront availability, pricing, and patch status. Those details are the parts of this release most likely to differ from what you read here, so confirm them on Blizzard’s official store page or the Game Pass catalog before you buy or subscribe.
