Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne is the 2003 expansion to Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos. For a new Windows player, however, the practical buying decision is different from it was in 2003: Blizzard’s current official product is Warcraft III: Reforged, which includes access to the classic Reign of Chaos and The Frozen Throne content through the Battle.net client.

What The Frozen Throne is
Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne was released for Windows on July 1, 2003, as an expansion to Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos. Its campaign begins after the events of the original game and continues the story from several faction perspectives. It is not the same product as World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, despite the similar “Frozen Throne” terminology.

What the expansion adds
The Frozen Throne is more than a collection of extra missions. Its additions affect the way Warcraft III is played and created:
- New campaign content: The post-Reign of Chaos story is told across multiple faction viewpoints, with new missions and scenarios built around the expansion’s characters and conflicts.
- New heroes: Each of Warcraft III’s four principal races—Humans, Orcs, Night Elves, and Undead—receives additional hero options.

The current Windows version: Warcraft III: Reforged
Blizzard no longer presents a newly sold, separate digital Windows edition of The Frozen Throne as the main current product. The supported purchase route is Warcraft III: Reforged. Blizzard describes Reforged as including the classic Warcraft III experience—both Reign of Chaos and The Frozen Throne—alongside updated graphics and modern client features.
A new Windows installation requires:
- a Battle.net account;
- the Battle.net desktop application;
- an internet connection; and
- a Windows PC that meets the game’s requirements.
This means the current experience should not be described as a simple disc-only installation. The 2003 manual’s optical-disc and CD-key instructions are historically accurate, but they describe the original retail workflow rather than guaranteeing how every old key or used copy will work with the current Battle.net service.
What Reforged includes
In addition to the combined campaigns, Blizzard’s current product information identifies modern matchmaking, custom-game support, and the PC World Editor. It also describes updated voice-over and reshot cutscenes for the remade presentation.

Windows is the more complete platform for creators because the World Editor is unavailable on Mac. If your main reason for buying Warcraft III is making or editing custom maps, Windows is therefore the safer choice.
Classic graphics versus Reforged graphics
Reforged gives players a choice between the modernized presentation and classic assets. Patch 2.0 added a Classic HD asset system and an in-game option for switching between Classic and Reforged assets. The update also added a Frozen Throne-themed interface option and in-game hotkey customization, along with other quality-of-life improvements.

There is an important distinction here: “Classic” in the current client does not necessarily mean an untouched 2003 installation running independently from Blizzard’s modern software. It refers to the classic content and asset modes available inside the current Reforged client. Blizzard’s support documentation also states that switching between Classic and HD models requires ownership of Reforged and a computer that meets the game’s minimum requirements.
In practical terms:
- Choose Reforged assets if you want the visual remake and updated presentation.
- Choose Classic assets if you prefer the original visual style while still using the current client.
- Buy an original disc only if the physical edition, manual, packaging, or preservation value matters to you, or if you specifically want to maintain a legacy copy.

Blizzard maintains requirements for both Reforged and Classic. The current minimum Windows tier identified in Blizzard’s requirements information includes:

How to install it on Windows today
- Use the current Battle.net route. Obtain Warcraft III: Reforged through Blizzard’s current Battle.net purchasing and account system, or use an eligible Xbox Game Pass pathway if it is available in your region and tier at the time of purchase.
- Install the Battle.net desktop application. Sign in with the Battle.net account associated with the entitlement.

- Condition: Confirm that the discs are readable and that the listing includes clear photos or a reliable condition description.
- Completeness: Check whether the original box, case, manual, inserts, registration card, and both game discs are included.
- CD keys: Verify whether keys are present, legible, unused, or already claimed. A visible key is not the same as a guaranteed current Battle.net entitlement.
- Edition and region: Make sure the product is the Windows edition and understand any regional packaging or activation differences.
- Seller description: Avoid assuming that “complete” means every disc, manual, and key is included. Read the inventory list carefully.

If you buy the original disc

Updates and support context
The modern client is not simply the 2003 disc republished without changes. Blizzard has continued to patch Reforged. Version 1.36.1 included system updates, balance changes, map-pool updates, restored save/load functionality for online games outside ranked matches, camera-zoom changes, observer improvements, and bug fixes.
Patch 2.0 later expanded the visual and interface options with Classic HD assets, switching between Classic and Reforged assets, a Frozen Throne interface theme, in-game hotkey customization, and additional quality-of-life features. If Reforged fails to launch or performs poorly, start with Blizzard’s own guidance rather than immediately installing an unverified optimization utility:
- Compare the PC with Blizzard’s current minimum and recommended requirements.
- Update Windows.
- Update the graphics driver from the relevant hardware manufacturer.
- Close conflicting background applications and overlays.
- Allow the Battle.net client to complete pending updates.
- Restart the PC and test again before changing multiple settings at once.
These steps are sensible first-line troubleshooting, but they do not guarantee that a particular Windows computer will run the game perfectly. If the problem is specific to an old disc, also separate the optical-media issue from the modern client issue: a damaged disc or unreadable key cannot be fixed by changing graphics settings.
