Neither game is a universal winner. Choose Warframe if you want a free starting point and prefer a game with an announced continuing narrative roadmap. Choose Destiny 2 if you want its particular mix of raids, dungeons, Crucible PvP, Gambit, campaigns, and other activities—and are comfortable navigating paid content access in a game that no longer has planned live-service updates. Both remain playable free-to-start options, but their content futures differ sharply.
What is the biggest difference between Warframe and Destiny 2 right now?
The clearest difference is their announced content outlook. Bungie says Destiny 2 Update 9.7.0, released June 9, 2026, was the final planned live-service content update. The game remains playable, and Bungie says future hotfixes may be needed; that is not the same as a shutdown. Bungie’s support guide sets out the post-update status.
Digital Extremes announced Warframe: Tau as a free narrative chapter planned for all platforms in 2026. That announcement is a roadmap, not proof the chapter is available now; check the TennoCon 2026 announcement and current in-game or official availability information before treating it as released.
What can you play for free, and what may cost extra?
Both games offer a free entry point, but free access does not mean the same catalog. Destiny 2’s free content includes a New Light questline, several subclasses, Shadowkeep and Beyond Light story content, selected raids and activities, and free systems. Other expansions, content packs, reward passes, Dungeon Keys, or expansion ownership can be required for particular content. Some Light and Darkness Saga content is not currently available. Bungie’s available-content guide is the practical reference for what access requires.

#1 Best Overall
Warframe’s announced Tau chapter is described by Digital Extremes as free. The information available here does not establish a like-for-like total cost or value-per-hour comparison between the games, so it is better to try each free entry point than to assume one delivers more for the money.
Which game fits the activities you want?
Pick Destiny 2 for its documented activity mix
Bungie lists campaign content, raids, dungeons, PvE activities, Crucible, and Gambit. The Monument of Triumph update also added or refreshed activities and systems, including the Director and Sparrow Racing League. These are concrete reasons to choose Destiny 2 if those specific modes appeal to you, but they do not indicate that planned ongoing content updates continue.

- Signs of the end times draw powerful heroes from all over sanctuary to rise up and defeat an evil reborn
- Challenge death itself as maltha-angel of death-attempts to harness the infernal powers of the black soul stone
- Commanding the powers of blood, bone, and armies of undead, the Necromancer joins the fight

Pick Warframe for its announced narrative direction
Digital Extremes’ Tau announcement points to a continuing narrative roadmap, with the important qualification that it was planned for 2026 and must be checked for release status. The official material cited here does not provide a parallel inventory of Warframe modes, so it cannot support a claim that either game has more or better endgame activities overall.
What should returning Destiny 2 players check before buying?
Do not assume every older story chapter or activity is available just because it was once part of Destiny 2. Bungie’s Destiny Content Vault explains that destinations and activity content can rotate out. Bungie says expansions stopped being vaulted after an August 2022 announcement, while seasonal content can move to the vault when a new expansion launches. Consult the current availability guide for specific content and the Destiny Content Vault information for the broader model. This matters most if you are buying with the expectation of playing a complete, continuous story from the beginning.

So, is Warframe better than Destiny 2?
- Choose Warframe if you want to begin without buying an expansion and value an announced continuing narrative roadmap, while checking whether the planned Tau chapter has actually launched.
- Choose Destiny 2 if its FPS combat, raids, dungeons, Crucible, Gambit, and campaign activities are what you want, and you are willing to check which content requires a purchase or key. Go in knowing planned live-service updates ended with Update 9.7.0.
- If you are undecided, try the free content in both before spending. Then decide whether Destiny 2’s paid catalog and post-final-update state suit you.
There is no supported objective overall winner here: the official sources establish content access and announced plans, not a standardized comparison of combat feel, onboarding, story quality, endgame depth, or value per hour. Digital Extremes reported more than 85 million Warframe players in its 2026 announcement; that is a developer-reported cumulative figure, not monthly active users or a head-to-head popularity measure.
