Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy will let players accuse suspects on limited evidence, keep investigating for answers, or knowingly pin a crime on the wrong person or group. Owlcat Games says those choices can shape story branches, rewards, NPC attitudes and potentially endings, though no single consequence is promised for every case.
That freedom has a catch: the Inquisition’s verdict and the truth of what happened are not necessarily the same. If you accuse someone before uncovering the full story, the game may treat your chosen verdict as truth in-world even if you have not established that it is factually correct.

The details come from a 6 October 2026 PC Gamer interview with Owlcat senior narrative designer Veronika Larionova. The game is still in development, so its investigation systems may change.
Can you accuse someone on thin evidence?
Yes. Larionova says a player can accuse any suspect once some evidence against them has been logged—even if the basis is little more than a hunch. You do not have to complete every line of inquiry before reaching a verdict.
#1 Best Overall
- A roleplaying game of danger, mystery and brutal violence set in the grim future of Warhammer 40,000
- Players defend humanity from the many threats of the Ashkelon Sector
- Fast and fun character creation permits an exciting variety of combinations of home worlds, backgrounds and character roles
- Players can play as Psyches, Untouchables and even Inquisitors with Elite Advances
- Graphical layouts help Game Masters quickly access and digest all necessary information
Continuing the investigation can add proof and detail, but it can also uncover evidence that clears the suspect. The choice is therefore not simply between a correct answer and a wrong one: it is also about when you decide you have enough information to act.
Can you deliberately blame the wrong person?
Yes. Larionova confirmed that purposeful false blame is part of the game, saying, “Moments like that will definitely happen.” She describes choices made according to a player’s own convictions or those of their patrons—not a promise that falsely accusing someone will always be advantageous.
Owlcat says consequences can include different story branches, rewards, changed NPC attitudes and additional endings. Which consequences follow depends on the particular case and the choices made; the interview does not guarantee that every false accusation will produce all, or any specific one, of those outcomes.
What does the investigation involve?
Owlcat describes a detective-style process built around an evidence journal, a board for linking clues, crime-scene examination, reconstruction of events, narrative deductions and companion input. Larionova says the journal gathers, sorts and stores evidence. In some cases, a rare Servo-Ossuarium—a group of servo-skull assistants—can track suspicious trails, intercept signals and analyse data. Other inquisitors may share devices.

Companions add their knowledge and experience. They can help gather evidence during conversations with suspects and suggest alternative solutions, but they do not solve mysteries independently. Their conclusions are opinions for the player to weigh, not automatic answers.
Cases may call for chains of deductions, though Larionova says luck can sometimes work as well. That does not mean every mystery can be solved by guessing or that collecting evidence never matters: NPC reactions and the wider world may respond to what the player has uncovered.

Make the accusation early or keep investigating?
| Approach | What it means | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Accuse early | You may reach a verdict after logging even thin evidence. | You act with less information; the verdict may not match what actually happened, and the consequences depend on the case. |
| Investigate further | You can gather more detail and proof, or find evidence that clears a suspect. | More evidence can refine or overturn your view, but the interview gives no quantified success rate or guarantee that further investigation leads to one definitive answer. |
The game’s appeal, as described by Owlcat, is that you can decide what to do with uncertainty rather than waiting for a universally safe option. Larionova says the world and its NPCs may react to the evidence collected, so the information you choose to pursue can matter beyond the accusation itself.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is this an Eisenhorn game?
No. Larionova calls Gregor Eisenhorn an iconic figure and says his story inspired the team, but she says Owlcat leans more toward the classic Dark Heresy tabletop RPG rulebooks. The game is not presented as an adaptation of the novels or as a chance to play Eisenhorn himself.
Best Value
Instead, the CRPG’s roleplaying freedom lets players make choices with moral weight of the kind associated with Eisenhorn’s story, while approaching the setting from the tabletop game’s broader foundation. Larionova puts the emphasis on consequences for the people of the Scintilla system: “there are no right or wrong choices, only choices whose consequences the inhabitants of the Scintilla system will have to live with.”
For franchise context, Games Workshop’s 22 May 2025 announcement describes Dark Heresy as an upcoming grimdark, party-based, story-driven CRPG in which players become Inquisition acolytes, lead investigations, uncover conspiracies and fight heresy. That announcement does not establish a launch date or current platform availability.
