In Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, an archetype is a class-like progression path that shapes a character’s abilities and development. Your first archetype also affects which later paths are available, so consider both the combat role you want now and the routes it opens later. Origins and DLC can add exceptions to those routes.

How archetypes work

The community-maintained WH40K Rogue Trader Wiki’s archetype overview describes three progression tiers. It gives the following level ranges; updates may change progression, so treat them as a guide and check your installed version:

Tier Wiki-listed levels What it means
Tier 1 1–15 Your initial archetype and early development.
Tier 2 16–35 A later path whose availability depends on earlier choices, with some Origin- or DLC-related exceptions.
Tier 3 36–55 Exemplar, the final tier in the wiki’s overview.

Archetypes determine aspects of character growth, including characteristics, skills, and abilities. The wiki lists Warrior, Officer, Operative, Soldier, and Bladedancer among the Tier 1 choices. Tier 2 has more paths, but there is no single universal list: eligibility can depend on your Tier 1 archetype, Origin, and owned expansion content.

How to choose a path

There is no evidence here for a universally strongest archetype. Instead, compare the role you want in combat with the later paths your starting choice permits. Before committing, check the character-creation screen and current in-game tooltips for the options available to your character.

  • The new Rulebook focuses on the Gilead System, allowing you to tell your own stories in a society beset by daemonic invasion and internal corruption
  • Character Creation has been streamlined, with a focus on Frameworks. With so many choices of who and what you can play, you’ll want to decide the focus of your game early

  1. Choose the desired role. Decide how you want the character to contribute in combat, then review the starting archetypes and their tooltips.
  2. Check the Tier 2 routes. Confirm which second-tier paths are offered after your Tier 1 choice rather than assuming every character can select every path.
  3. Review Origin and DLC conditions. Some paths have eligibility exceptions tied to an Origin or expansion content; verify that the relevant content is available in your game.
  4. Make foundational choices carefully. Retraining later advances is not the same as changing the starting archetype or other creation choices.

Overseer eligibility: an example of an exception

Owlcat Games’ Lex Imperialis announcement describes Overseer as a second-tier archetype available through Officer or Operative, and also through certain Origins: Sanctioned Psyker, Unsanctioned Psyker, or the newly introduced Arbites Origin. This is a specific expansion-related example, not a rule that applies to every Tier 2 archetype.

What retraining can and cannot change

The community-maintained character-creation wiki identifies High Factotum Janris Danrok as the retraining contact. It says retraining does not let you change Tier 1 archetype, Homeworld, Origin, Triumph, or Darkest Hour. Because retraining behavior can vary with game updates, check the current in-game options before relying on it to undo a foundational choice.

What to verify in your game

  • Which Tier 2 options appear for your character after the chosen Tier 1 archetype.
  • Whether an Origin or owned DLC changes access to a path, such as the Overseer exception described by Owlcat.
  • Current level thresholds, ability descriptions, and retraining limits, since community wiki details may not reflect every update.
