Build Abelard as a frontline Warrior tank: prioritize Toughness, then Weapon Skill, then Strength. Use Charge to reach enemies, Endure to help him withstand incoming damage, and Taunting Scream or other threat tools to draw attacks away from vulnerable companions. For a dedicated tank progression, continue from Warrior into Vanguard.
Why a frontline tank suits Abelard
Abelard joins early as a Warrior, making him a natural choice to occupy the frontline and protect more fragile allies. Jason Rodriguez’s Epic Games Store guide recommends giving him that tanking role rather than building the main character to fill the same job. This is a role-based recommendation, not a claim that one build is best for every party or difficulty.
Which attributes should you prioritize?
- Toughness: Prioritize it first to support Abelard’s durability as he takes the frontline role.
- Weapon Skill: Raise it next as part of the Warrior setup.
- Strength: Take it after Toughness and Weapon Skill.
This order follows the Warrior attribute guidance in the Epic Games Store guide. Adjust individual choices to suit your equipment, party support, difficulty, and game version.
How to use Abelard in combat
- Close the distance with Charge. Use the Warrior ability to get Abelard into engagement and bring pressure onto the frontline.
- Keep him standing with Endure. The ability provides damage reduction and temporary hit points, helping him stay in the fight.
- Draw enemy attention. Use Taunting Scream or other threat tools to encourage enemies to focus on Abelard instead of vulnerable allies.
The aim is to position Abelard where he can engage threats and absorb pressure. His job is party protection and frontline presence, rather than maximizing personal damage.

Should you choose Vanguard as his second archetype?
Warrior-to-Vanguard is the clearest dedicated tank direction in the available build guidance. A guide result published August 13, 2026 describes a Warrior-to-Vanguard full-tank setup for version 1.6 and Unfair difficulty, but its detailed leveling choices could not be verified. Treat Vanguard as a role-focused continuation, not as proof of a universally strongest build.
Epic’s progression guide places the advanced archetype choice at level 16 and Exemplar at level 36. Because the second archetype cannot be changed, choose it with care. Janris Danrok can reset skills and talents for Profit Factor, but that does not let you replace the archetype. See the Epic Games Store guide for its progression overview.

How should patch and difficulty affect the build?
Owlcat’s June 11, 2026 update 1.6 announcement highlights changes to Uralon, Operative and Assassin mechanics, grenades, and the talent-selection interface; it does not list an Abelard-specific rework among those highlights. That announcement alone does not establish that every Warrior or Vanguard detail is unchanged. Expect to adjust talents and equipment to your party, difficulty, downloadable content, and current patch rather than treating a fixed sequence as mandatory.
For a broad, dependable setup, the attribute priorities and combat loop above are the supported starting point. The available evidence does not establish a complete level-by-level talent progression or a sourced damage-focused alternative, so there is no responsible basis here for prescribing exact picks at every level.
