The first lock needs the torches lit in the order left, middle, right when you face them. The second lock is a spirit-and-corpse trail that ends at a concealed door. The third lock needs a wisp carried to a skeleton that pulls a lever. The locks can be found in a different order, but this walkthrough follows the order most guides use: torches, then spirit, then wisp.
Where the vault is and how the quest starts
Explore Warden Castle in Rivain. In the main hall, find the stairs leading down and clear the red crystal, which the guides call a Blistering Drakestone, that blocks the route to the sealed vault door. The quest is not handed out by a character. It starts when you interact with the vault or find one of its locks while exploring. Read the thief’s note beside the door. Guides describe it as pointing toward three seals, which is the three-lock structure covered below.
Lock 1: the three torches
This lock is solved entirely by the torch sequence and a lever chain. Follow these steps:
- Head back toward the castle entrance and find the Gaatlok barrel leaning against the wall.
- Ignite the barrel. Gamer Guides says you can use Taash or the Lyrium Dagger, as described in that guide.
- Enter the area the fire opens. Break the boxes and barrels in the alcove to reveal three torch controls.
- Stand facing the torches and activate them in this order: left, middle, right.
- Return up the nearby stairs, take the upper route, and pull the lever that opens the room marked with the shield.
- Inside, pull the seal lever to activate the first lock. A gear chest is also reported in this room.
Lock 2: follow the spirit from corpse to corpse
The second lock has no switch to find. A slow-moving green spirit appears when you examine a corpse with a sword, and it travels through the castle. Its direction is the clue to the next remains. PC Gamer describes three skeleton stops after the starting body, and Gamer Guides counts four corpses in total, including the first one. The two accounts describe the same sequence, so the route below follows it. Landmarks may look slightly different depending on how you approach the area.

- Examine the first corpse near the main hall. It glows green and holds a sword.
- Follow the spirit through the wall, up and out toward the exterior route.
- Examine the next remains near the earlier blasted opening.
- Continue to the corpse near the main-hall entrance.
- Follow the spirit back toward the hall and the southern wall. It leads you to a concealed door.
- Enter the door and pull the second seal lever.
Lock 3: retrieve the wisp for the final room
The third lock depends on a timed wisp and a reanimated skeleton behind a wall. Gamer Guides notes that the wisp is timed, so if you want the nearby gear chest, collect it before you activate the wisp.
- Go to the southern Castle Bailey and clear enemies if needed.
- Look up toward the raised ladder. Ignite the Gaatlok barrel on the ledge to drop it.
- Climb the ladder and approach the wisp.
- Lead the wisp back inside through the nearby corridor, toward the skeleton visible through a hole in the wall.
- The wisp possesses the corpse. The skeleton pulls a lever, which opens the final lock room.
- Activate the third lock.
Opening the vault and collecting rewards
With all three locks active, return to the sealed vault in the lower area of the main hall and open the door. You can then loot the chests and the memento. The guides do not fully agree on the reward list, so the table below separates what each source names.

Gear rolls from chests may vary between playthroughs, so treat the chest contents as variable. The named items and fixed strength bonuses above are the ones the guides describe consistently.
Crookytail’s Crest and the flaming effect
PC Gamer describes Crookytail’s Crest as a unique ring that boosts flaming attacks, and it notes that the effect may depend on your class. Gameranx gives the most specific description of how it interacts with Flaming Weapon. In its words: “While Flaming Weapon is active, Charged attacks deal Fire damage in an area around the target but remove Flaming Weapons.” This is a guide description, not a statement from the game’s developers. Check the effect in your own build before relying on it.
Version and source notes
The route and reward figures come from guides published in late 2024 and updated in 2025: Gamer Guides, PC Gamer, and Gameranx. Patches after those updates could change the exact landmarks or reward values. Electronic Arts’ official support hub links general guides and patch notes, but it did not show a dedicated Warden Vault walkthrough. Platform support for the game is listed by Gamer Guides as PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. No performance or edition comparison applies to the puzzle itself.
