Heretical Conviction in Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader grows through more than dialogue: choices, exploration events, colony projects, corrupted items and forbidden knowledge can all contribute. The key strategic decision is whether to let Heretical reach rank III, because that makes it your main conviction and caps Dogmatic and Iconoclast at rank II. Exact point totals and routes are patch-sensitive, so use the rank shown in your game rather than relying on an old choice-by-choice checklist.
What Heretical Conviction means
Conviction is both a role-playing alignment and a game system. The three branches—Heretical, Dogmatic and Iconoclast—shape narrative responses and can unlock mechanical abilities or affect access to equipment. The community Rogue Trader wiki’s conviction overview describes Heretical as alignment with Chaos and the corruption of the soul; it is a community reference, not an official Owlcat rules document.
The wiki describes three branches with five ranks each. Reaching rank III in one branch establishes it as your main focus and prevents either of the other branches from progressing beyond rank II. That is the important commitment point if you want to keep multiple paths open.
How to gain Heretical points
Heretical points are not limited to conversation choices. The community wiki identifies dialogue, exploration events, colony development, corrupted items and forbidden knowledge as sources of conviction progression. Watch for Heretical-marked options as you play and check your displayed conviction rank after significant decisions or projects.
#1 Best Overall
- SAS soldiers wage a guerrilla war deep behind enemy lines in this stealthy WW2 action game for 1-4 players.
- STRIKE FROM THE SHADOWS: Take down enemy patrols and sentries with the vast array of tools at your disposal, from rifles, explosives and grenades to vehicles, traps and your trusty fighting knife.
- LEAVE NO TRACE: Move quickly and quietly to complete your objectives. Kill silently and hide the bodies to avoid detection.
- Supports solo or cooperative play.
- Dialogue: Conviction-marked responses can add points; the amount may depend on the act and game version.
- Exploration: Events encountered while travelling or investigating can present conviction choices.
- Colony development: Some projects award conviction points. Their amounts were changed in a patch, so an older guide’s totals may not match your game.
- Items and knowledge: Corrupted items and forbidden knowledge are also identified as relevant to Heretical progression.
These are documented source categories, not a complete act-by-act route or a guarantee that any particular choice is required. Use the in-game conviction display to track your actual progress.
Why rank III is the decision point
Before allowing any branch to reach rank III, decide whether you are willing to make it your main focus. Under the community wiki’s description of the system, the rank-III branch can continue while the other two are limited to rank II. If you are pursuing Heretical, avoid accidentally crossing rank III with Dogmatic or Iconoclast first; if you want a mixed run, keep an eye on all three displayed ranks instead.
Rank #2
- Released 27/08/2022
- 99220999021
- Games Workshop - Age of Sigmar - Warcry: Chaos Legionaires
- The chosen of Be’lakor march into the heart of Ghur in the name of their dark master. These elite Chaos fighters hit hard and can take a real beating. Along with eight new miniatures, this set includes the fighter and ability cards to use in games of Warcry
- Plastic miniatures - require assembly and painting - paints and tools not included
This lock-in matters more than trying to collect every Heretical-tagged response. The available route information does not establish that every such option is mandatory, nor does it support a guaranteed point-by-point route to rank V.
What Heretical ranks unlock
Ranks can matter for combat abilities and equipment as well as story reactivity. A 2023 Pro Game Guides conviction table lists “Destroy the Weak” at Heretical rank II and “Gifts of the Warp” at rank III, with abilities at later ranks. Treat those names and rank placements as a dated secondary reference, not a current ability description: Owlcat has since changed conviction awards, and ability text can be checked in your current game.

- Mini Rogue is a game profoundly inspired by roguelikes and roleplaying games. Monsters, hazards, treasures, bosses, dungeons, as well as random rooms and encounters are all featured in this new and revised version of Mini Rogue.
- You play as an adventurer delving into a dungeon, room after room, floor after floor, area after area, level after level, to find the Og’s Blood, rumored to be a fabled and mysterious ruby gemstone.
- Each area of the dungeon is laid out as a branching path of rooms. Each time you face two rooms, you will have to choose and explore one. You will resolve each encounter by rolling dice and managing resources to complete your adventure.
- In each room, you may encounter a monster, find a treasure, discover a resting area, meet a merchant, dodge traps, or face many other surprising events. Each level ends with a powerful Boss monster which you will have to defeat to continue onto to the next level. You win the game by reaching the last room of the Dungeon and defeating the final Boss Monster, thus collecting the Og’s Blood.
- 30 minutes of gameplay for 1 to 2 players, ages 12 and above.
Some items also have conviction or rank requirements, according to the community wiki. Owlcat’s Patch 1.3 notes include an equipment restriction applying to Heretics at Follower rank or higher. Check the item’s current in-game requirement before planning around a piece of gear.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why older route guides may be inaccurate
Owlcat’s official Patch 1.3 notes say: “Many dialogue choices in the third and fourth Acts of the game that gave Dogmatic, Heretical or Iconoclast points now give significantly more of those points.” The notes also say projects that awarded those points now give double the amount.
Rank #4
As a result, older guides can misstate how many choices or projects it takes to reach a rank, particularly in Acts III and IV. The patch note establishes that awards changed; it does not provide a complete current point table or a guaranteed route. Follow the conviction indicators and rank shown in your own game rather than treating older totals as universal.
Choosing Heretical over the other convictions
Each branch represents a different role-playing philosophy and can produce different narrative reactions, abilities and equipment interactions. Heretical is the Chaos-aligned choice; Dogmatic and Iconoclast are separate branches. The available sources do not provide a current, comprehensive side-by-side ranking of their abilities, so there is no supported basis for calling one path objectively strongest.
Choose Heretical if its role-playing direction suits the character you want to play and you accept the rank-III commitment. If preserving access to multiple conviction paths is more important, monitor your ranks before any branch reaches that threshold.
