Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 Heavy Class Guide

Space Marine 2’s Heavy excels at ranged support and squad protection, with a notable melee weakness. Here’s how Patch 15.0’s PvE and PvP changes affect the class.

The Heavy is Space Marine 2’s ranged-support class: it brings sustained firepower and squad protection, while close-quarters combat is its clearest weakness. Focus Entertainment’s Patch 15.0 gives the Heavy Bolter a 5% base-damage increase in PvE and reduces Iron Halo health by 25% in PvP; those changes apply to different modes and should not be conflated. There is no official, mode-by-mode “best build” established by the sources available, so choose weapons and perks around your role and the mode you play.

What is the Heavy class in Space Marine 2?

Heavy is built around ranged combat and supporting the squad with firepower and protection. The trade-off is melee: Focus Entertainment described it in Patch 6.0 as Heavy’s “almost only weakness,” and noted that perks can help cover it. That statement explains the class’s design, but it is not a complete or current perk guide.

In practice, think of Heavy as a backline or midline anchor. Keep firing lanes open, contribute damage at range, and use your protection ability to help the squad through exposed or dangerous moments. If enemies reach melee distance, treat that as a problem to manage rather than the class’s primary strength.

What changed for Heavy in Patch 15.0?

Focus Entertainment’s Patch 15.0 notes include separate Heavy changes for PvE and PvP, as well as a new Ordeals feature.

Mode or feature Patch 15.0 change What it means
PvE Heavy Bolter base damage increased by 5%. A specific Heavy weapon received a damage increase; the notes do not say every Heavy weapon received the same adjustment.
PvP Iron Halo health decreased by 25%. Iron Halo is less durable in PvP. This percentage is not a PvE change.
Ordeals Heavy class challenges added. Players can encounter Heavy class challenges in the Ordeals feature.

The same patch says primary weapon base damage was increased to compensate for reduced Auspex Scan efficiency. That broader explanation does not mean every Heavy weapon received an identical increase: the Heavy-specific weapon change named in the notes is the Heavy Bolter’s PvE increase.

How does Iron Halo work as squad protection?

Iron Halo is part of Heavy’s protective role: it provides a way to shield the squad while the class supports the fight with ranged fire. Patch 15.0’s 25% health reduction is explicitly a PvP balance change. Do not use it to estimate Iron Halo’s PvE durability.

In PvP, account for the lower health by being deliberate about when you deploy the protection rather than assuming it will absorb as much incoming damage as before. In PvE, the cited patch notes do not establish a corresponding Iron Halo health change, so they do not support applying the PvP figure to that mode.

How should you choose a Heavy build?

There is no supported universal best build for every mode, difficulty, progression level, or play style. The official Patch 15.0 notes report balance changes, not a complete current Heavy perk tree or a tested build ranking. Use these decision points to shape a build without treating an unverified setup as definitive:

  • Choose for the mode. PvE and PvP have different recent Heavy changes, so make mode-specific decisions rather than carrying over one assumption.
  • Set your damage priority. Favor sustained ranged damage if you want to hold firing lanes; consider close-range mitigation if your group or encounter regularly leaves you exposed in melee.
  • Balance protection and personal output. Decide whether your squad needs you to emphasize survivability and coverage or maximize your own damage contribution.
  • Account for handling and ammunition. A weapon’s damage is only one part of its value; choose something you can use effectively while managing its handling and ammunition demands.
  • Use the perks you have unlocked. Progression affects available choices, and the historical perk changes in Patch 6.0 do not establish the current full tree or every effect.

For PvE, Patch 15.0’s Heavy Bolter increase is a reason to consider that weapon, not proof it is the best choice in every mission or difficulty. For PvP, the Iron Halo change makes protection timing more consequential, but it does not establish a complete competitive build. Treat any specific weapon-and-perk combination as a recommendation for a stated mode and patch, not a timeless ranking.

What do the Patch 6.0 perk notes tell you?

Patch 6.0 shows that Heavy’s perks have been adjusted over time, including perks such as Enhanced Force, Encompassing Aegis, Adamant Will, Saving Grace, Offensive Capability, Field Adjustment, Coolant Reserve, Strategic Stand, Power Regulator, and Wrath of the Imperium. Focus Entertainment’s Patch 6.0 notes are useful historical context, but they do not confirm that every listed value or perk placement remains current.

The notes’ design point is the more durable takeaway: perks have been used to compensate for Heavy’s weakness in melee. Check the in-game descriptions and current availability when selecting perks rather than relying on old numerical details as a current build sheet.

Is Heavy good in PvE or PvP?

Heavy has a clear ranged-support role in either mode, but the balance evidence differs. In PvE, Patch 15.0 increased Heavy Bolter base damage by 5%. In PvP, it reduced Iron Halo health by 25%. Those changes identify what the patch adjusted; they do not prove that Heavy is objectively stronger in one mode, nor do they establish a best build or performance ranking.

Choose Heavy when you want to contribute at range and support teammates with protection. If you expect frequent close combat, plan around the class’s melee weakness and select available perks accordingly.
