Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 is at its best when it turns you loose in a vast, bloody battle: its combat and spectacle make a potent power fantasy. But the campaign’s story and the multiplayer experience drew sharply different reactions from reviewers, so this is a stronger recommendation for action and atmosphere than for narrative depth.
What Space Marine 2 is
Developed by Saber Interactive, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 is a third-person action game set in Games Workshop’s grim future. Focus Entertainment announced its launch for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on 9 September 2024. PlayStation describes fast-paced ranged and melee combat, with hundreds of enemies appearing on screen.
The central appeal is the contrast between gunfire and close combat: you play as a Space Marine fighting overwhelming numbers of enemies amid the series’ brutal, imposing world. That combination of scale, sound, and physicality is what the strongest reviews identify as the game’s defining strength.
How the reviews differ
The critical response is not unanimous. The reviews below agree that the setting and combat can be compelling, but diverge on how long the action stays engaging and how much the other modes add.

| Review | Test context | What worked | What did not |
|---|---|---|---|
| TechRadar, Cat Bussell, 4 September 2024 | PS5; about 16 hours, including the campaign, mission replays, and nearly all co-op missions. Played in performance mode. | Combat, visuals, sound, and an accessible introduction to the setting. | Limited character development, a weak finale, a small co-op mission selection at launch, and grind-heavy progression. |
| PC Gamer, Robin Valentine, 4 September 2024; 60/100 | PC with a GeForce RTX 3080, Ryzen 9 5900X, and 32 GB RAM. | The scale and authenticity of the Warhammer 40,000 setting. | Repetitive action, a story that loses direction, and multiplayer the reviewer found unengaging. |
| Wargamer, Timothy Linward; updated 15 September 2025; 7/10 | Review score not updated after the later Eternal War test. | Combat, world-building, and co-op. | A weak story and poor AI companions. The original review could not test Eternal War; a later update says early-access players enabled a test. |
These are individual reviewers’ assessments, not a single consensus verdict. TechRadar’s Cat Bussell called it “a well-crafted power trip elevated by stellar combat and awe-inspiring visuals.” That praise captures the game’s strongest case, but it does not mean every campaign or multiplayer component is equally successful.
Combat, scale, and spectacle
For TechRadar, the fluid shift between ranged fire and melee, the visual scale of battles, and the sound design were major strengths. The review reported only a few frame-rate drops during its PS5 performance-mode session; that is one reviewer’s experience on that setup, not a general performance guarantee across platforms.

- DLC Lifetime Offer: Pre-order the Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 Standard Edition to receive the Macragge’s Chosen DLC.
- Play solo or with up to 2 friends in 3 player co-op.
- Purge the relentless Tyranid swarms as legendary Space Marine Titus in a spectacular new campaign
PC Gamer also valued the spectacle and the authenticity of the setting, but found the action repetitive. The difference matters: if the feel of being a heavily armed Space Marine is the main attraction, the game’s combat can carry it; if you need substantial changes in pace and encounter design, repetition may become more noticeable.
Campaign and story
The campaign can be played solo or online with up to two friends, according to PlayStation. Reviewers’ main reservation is the writing rather than the premise or setting. TechRadar criticized sparse character development and a weak finale; PC Gamer said the story loses direction; Wargamer also judged it weak.

- Brand new. UK Import PAL version. Game in English. UK PSN account may be required for any online features.
That makes the campaign a better fit for players who want to inhabit the setting and fight through large battles than for those seeking a character-focused story. The reviews differ in their overall assessment, but none of the cited praise makes narrative depth the game’s main selling point.
Co-op, solo play, and replay missions
Alongside the campaign, PlayStation lists replayable PvE missions for up to three players across six classes. Saber Support says co-op is online only, so local couch co-op is not available. TechRadar’s review described six co-op missions at launch and criticized their limited number and grind-heavy progression; those observations describe the launch-era offering and should not be treated as a current count of all available content.

Solo players should also weigh the AI companions. Wargamer criticized their performance, while TechRadar reported playing missions with both AI and human teammates. If you plan to play primarily alone, the companions’ shortcomings may matter more than they do in a regular group.
Wargamer’s 7/10 score needs one further qualification: its original review could not test Eternal War because other reviewers with codes were unavailable. The publication later tested it with early-access players, but left the score unchanged. Its multiplayer judgment therefore reflects a review scope that changed over time, rather than a fully tested PvP assessment at the time of its original score.

What has changed since launch
The game has received post-launch content. Warhammer Community reported on 28 July 2026 that Patch 14, the Confrontation Update, added PvP arenas, weapons, armour, and an enemy. Two cosmetic armour sets in that update were automatically available to Season Pass 2 owners or could be acquired separately.
Saber Support’s FAQ says paid DLC is cosmetic and gameplay features are free. That FAQ may retain launch-era framing, so it should not be read as a promise about every future update or edition. For the current PS5 edition, anniversary editions, season passes, and regional availability, check the PlayStation US product page; store listings and prices can change by territory and date.
Is Space Marine 2 worth playing?
If you want forceful third-person combat, Warhammer 40,000 atmosphere, and huge battles, the game has a clear appeal. If your priorities are a deep story, consistently varied action, strong AI companions, or multiplayer that all reviewers find engaging, the cited reviews give you reason to temper expectations. Its best case is a spectacular action power trip; its weaker parts are the story and the uneven value of its modes.
