PC Gamer’s Jody Macgregor summed up the preview as: “It’s still the same Blood Bowl, but with some interesting tweaks.” That is a promising early impression, not a final verdict on balance or monetization.
What changed in Warhammer: Blood Bowl?
In a beta preview published by PC Gamer on October 5, 2026, Macgregor describes a game built on the familiar Blood Bowl foundation rather than a wholly new direction. Traditional matches remain available, and the opening campaign carries over from Blood Bowl 3. The most substantial structural addition is Rumble Mode; the preview also reports tabletop third-season rule changes and a few interface improvements.
Calling it “Blood Bowl 3.5” is a way to describe that in-between character, not an official product name. The preview is based on a few days with a beta, so its impressions do not establish final balance or how the released game will be monetized.
What is Rumble Mode?
Rumble Mode is a compact, seven-a-side format inspired by tabletop Sevens. PC Gamer’s beta preview describes a smaller pitch, six turns per half instead of the traditional eight, rerolls at twice their usual cost, and no line of scrimmage. With a gap between the teams rather than a forced three-player frontline, the opening setup changes the risks and tactics of the match.

- Fewer players and less space: The smaller pitch means slower players are less of a liability, according to Macgregor’s beta observations.
- Costlier rerolls: With rerolls twice as expensive, skills such as Dodge may become more valuable.
- A different opening: The lack of a line of scrimmage changes how teams approach the start of play.
The beta’s Rumble Mode was not identical to tabletop Sevens: the preview notes that it omitted Desperate Measures inducements and did not require a lineman veteran. The campaign’s opening chapter, carried over from Blood Bowl 3, defaulted to seven-a-side in the beta. Players could choose traditional matches or Rumble Mode for the rest of the campaign; the preview also says the mode was available in Eternal League, competitions, and friendlies.
How do the reported third-season rules change play?
The preview says the beta incorporates tabletop Blood Bowl’s third-season rules update. The details it highlights shift incentives around scoring, ball handling, passing, and player development:
Rank #2
- Boxed Game
- Stalling carries a penalty: Audience members can throw rocks at players who could score but choose to stall. The preview also reports a bonus 10 grand at the end of a match for not stalling.
- Secure the Ball: A player can use this action to pick up the ball on a 2+, but doing so ends that player’s activation.
- Passing outcomes: The preview reports that Wildly Inaccurate results and deflections are removed.
- MVP nominations: Instead of a random player receiving bonus Star Player Points, the coach nominates six possible MVP recipients, or four in Rumble Mode.
Macgregor’s early assessment of the rule changes is favorable, but he cautions that their effects on balance across a tournament need longer evaluation. These mechanics are details reported in the beta preview, not a substitute for final rules documentation.
Does the beta improve the AI and interface?
Macgregor saw signs of better AI decision-making, including the AI choosing the better block die when offered a choice and attempting a pass in one situation. But the beta also produced questionable decisions: an ill-advised block and a risky action before a prone player had been stood up. After only a few days with the build, he said he needed more time to compare the AI. The evidence supports cautious optimism, not a claim that the AI has been fixed.

- Streamlined and updated rules make for the most exciting version of the game – ever
- Get two fully-loaded teams, complete with Star Players and Big Guys right out of the gate
- Meet your rivals across the Line of Scrimmage in the ultimate test of guts and athletic skill
The preview also reports two interface additions:
- A customizable landing page where players can pin tiles for modes or competitions.
- A player-advancement screen showing the three skills other players most often buy in a given situation, with percentages.
Is this a sequel or an upgrade?
Based on the beta preview, it is best understood as a substantial update to the familiar Blood Bowl experience, rather than a completely new game. Rumble Mode is a meaningful change to match structure, while the campaign foundation and traditional matches preserve continuity with Blood Bowl 3. The reported rules and interface changes add further reasons it may feel improved, but the preview does not settle how well the changes will hold up over time.
The beta was also incomplete: Tomb Kings and Bretonnians, the shop, and the season pass were absent. That leaves the final team lineup and monetization model unanswered. The preview’s planned public playtest date of October 7, 2026, and full release at the end of November 2026 were plans reported on October 5, not confirmation of current availability.
