Which Warhammer game was free to keep?
The game was Warhammer: Vermintide 2, developed and published by Fatshark. Steam lists its PC release date as March 8, 2018. It is a first-person melee action game set in the Warhammer Fantasy Battles world, built around cooperative missions.
Fatshark describes the game as supporting “Up to 4 player co-op” and featuring five heroes with 15 career paths. Steam also lists online co-op among its features. That makes it a squad-based action game rather than a turn-based Warhammer strategy title.
Can you still claim the free copy?
No. Contemporary reports from GameSpew and Rock, Paper, Shotgun said the Steam promotion ended at 6 p.m. on November 23, 2025. The offer has expired; there is no basis to treat it as available in October 2026.

During the promotion, claiming the game meant keeping it in the Steam library, rather than gaining access only for a free weekend. That applied to the base game offer. Steam lists downloadable content separately, including both paid and free DLC, so the giveaway should not be taken to mean every add-on was included.
What can you do if you missed the promotion?
Check the Steam store page for the current listing, price, system requirements, and any active promotion. Store prices and availability can change, and no future giveaway is established. If you are considering the game, note that Steam lists broadband internet and 60 GB of available storage among its requirements; check the page again before installing, since requirements may be updated.

For players weighing whether to buy it rather than wait for another giveaway, the defining appeal is close-quarters co-op combat in the Warhammer Fantasy Battles setting. Fatshark’s five heroes and 15 career paths offer different ways to develop and play those characters, while the four-player format is designed for a group. The official descriptions establish the feature set, but whether its melee-focused missions suit you is a matter of preference.
