He described that approach as a “grown-up” alternative in a PC Gamer interview published September 25, 2026. It is his view of RPG storytelling, not a claim about players’ ages or an established genre category.
What Klíma means by calling RPGs “games for teenagers”
The headline phrase is a pointed framing of Klíma’s criticism, not a demographic finding. The interview provides no survey or other statistic showing that RPGs are mainly played by teenagers, and it does not establish that players who enjoy chosen-one stories are immature. Klíma is making an artistic judgment about a familiar kind of protagonist: the exceptional person whose destiny is to save the world.
His complaint is straightforward: “I still am bored and tired of all the RPGs where you are this chosen one.” He says he wanted a big RPG where “you are nobody,” doing ordinary things and ending up “just moderately less of a nobody.” The appeal is not necessarily a smaller world or less consequential play; it is a protagonist whose importance is not guaranteed by prophecy or status.
How Kingdom Come: Deliverance fits the idea
PC Gamer presents Kingdom Come: Deliverance as an example of the “grown-up RPG” Klíma has in mind. That label belongs to him; it is not an industry classification or an independent review verdict. The interview’s contrast is about the protagonist’s position in the story: an ordinary person rather than a destined saviour.

- FIND THE TALISMAN: Set forth on a dangerous journey—race to be the first to acquire a Talisman, reach the Crown of Command, and vanquish its guardian dragon to win
- TRAVEL THROUGH A MAGICAL LAND: The generously sized board depicts the land of Talisman, 3 regions of enchanted locations. The board changes as players layer on Adventure cards with more places to encounter
The distinction also helps explain the project’s reception story as Klíma’s interview tells it. He recounts that publishers were not interested in Warhorse’s historical RPG pitch. PC Gamer reports that the original Kingdom Come Kickstarter attracted 35,384 backers. That is a count of campaign backers, not copies sold or a measure of the game’s current audience; the article does not establish that publishers generally reject unconventional RPGs.
What the interview says about the sequel and Warhorse’s projects
The September 2026 interview identifies Kingdom Come: Deliverance II and discusses how the first game and sequel relate to Warhorse’s ambitions. Klíma’s observations about the games are his perspective, not a separate assessment of how fully either one realizes the ordinary-person premise.

- Maladum is a fantasy miniatures board game set in the kingdoms of Enveron, a prosperous continent on a distant world
- Your players control small bands of Adventurers seeking their fortune across a detailed 3D gaming area (no glue or paint required)
- You must venture out from your camp, defeat your enemies, complete the objectives and get back to safety -- that last part is vital!
- When the Adventurers have taken their actions, the game fights back -- evil revenants shamble towards you, wandering beasts emerge from their lairs and fellow NPC Adventurers find themselves lost in the chaos, all controlled by the game's mechanics!
PC Gamer also mentions a new Kingdom Come adventure and a Warhorse-driven Lord of the Rings game as projects in progress at the time of publication. Those are time-bound status statements from September 25, 2026, not confirmation of their status today.

Klíma is a co-founder of Warhorse Studios. His comments are best read as a creator’s argument for a different kind of RPG lead, rather than a verdict on every game with a heroic protagonist. Players drawn to grounded stories may find the premise appealing; those who want the escalation and world-saving stakes of chosen-one adventures may simply prefer a different kind of RPG.
