What items can you trade in?
GameStop’s trade program covers selected products at selected stores; not every item is accepted at every location. Look up your exact game, model, or device on GameStop’s trade-in page and confirm the nearby store accepts it before making a trip.
The store has the final say on eligibility, condition, and value. GameStop’s trade-in terms say that “Product condition and trade value are determined by us in our sole discretion,” and its FAQ says final eligibility and value are determined at the register. An online estimate is not a guaranteed offer.
What should you bring with the item?
Bring the functional components needed to operate the particular product. GameStop’s FAQ gives this rule: “If it came with your original purchase and is required to use the item, bring it.” For a console, that can include its original controller, power cable, HDMI cable, and other supplied cords or chargers. Requirements depend on the item, and missing functional parts may reduce the offer or result in a declined trade.

The FAQ says original packaging, printed manuals, paper inserts, and promotional materials are not required. Functional components are different: a box or manual is generally optional, but a required controller, charger, or cable may not be.
How to prepare before visiting
- Check the item and store. Search the exact product on GameStop’s trade page, then verify that your intended location accepts it.
- Gather its working parts. Bring the components needed to operate the item. For consoles, GameStop specifically names the original controller, power cable, HDMI cable, and other supplied cords or chargers.
- Prepare electronics and protect your information. Charge the device, back up or transfer anything you want to keep, then remove personal or sensitive data. Take out SIM cards, memory cards, and accessories or other items that were not part of the original product.
- Ask about unusual cases. If a component is missing or you are unsure whether an accessory is required, contact the store before traveling. GameStop’s FAQ notes customer service cannot override an in-store decision about a missing component.
- Check any saved estimate’s terms. Some item listings say a displayed price is valid only that day and that trades are subject to manager approval. Treat those conditions as specific to the listing, not a permanent rule for every trade.
GameStop’s FAQ, last updated May 26, 2026, has the current general component guidance: What Do I Need to Bring With My Trade-In? Its trade terms also disclaim claims related to contents and data on a traded device, so do not leave personal information or removable cards behind.

Cash, store credit, and GameStop Pro
For a particular item, GameStop may display separate cash and store-credit offers. The available payment forms and amounts depend on the item and current offer; the store’s assessment controls the final value.
Current GameStop Pro terms list 10% extra trade-in credit for eligible games and accessories, and 5% extra trade-in credit on graded collectibles, subject to exclusions. These benefits should not be assumed to apply to consoles or all electronics. Check the GameStop Pro terms and the item’s offer when you trade.
