Discovery announced on February 25, 2025, that it was shutting down Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and WB Games San Diego, while halting development on Wonder Woman. The move was framed as a profitability-focused reset around fewer, larger franchises—not an abandonment of video games. WBD said its priority properties would be Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC, and Game of Thrones.
What Warner Bros. Discovery announced
The restructuring affected three Warner Bros. game-development studios:
- Monolith Productions, best known for Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War.
- Player First Games, the developer of MultiVersus.
- WB Games San Diego, which was reportedly working on AAA free-to-play gaming.
Development on Monolith’s Wonder Woman game was also halted. The reports described the studios as being shut down, although the cited coverage does not establish the exact administrative completion date for each closure or provide a confirmed total for affected employees.
Warner Bros. Games said it had hoped to deliver a high-quality experience for the character, but that the project was no longer compatible with the company’s strategic priorities. That is the company’s explanation, not an independent judgment about the game’s quality or commercial prospects.

What happened to each studio?
Monolith Productions and Wonder Woman
Monolith had built a reputation through its Middle-earth games, whose combat and systemic enemy design became central to the studio’s identity. Its Wonder Woman project was announced in 2021 but never received a firm public release date in the cited reporting.
The game was reportedly intended to use or build on technology associated with Monolith’s Nemesis system. That should not be read as confirmation that the canceled game fully implemented the system. The available evidence establishes the project’s cancellation, not the final state of its technology, assets, or intellectual property.
The loss is significant for DC games: Wonder Woman was positioned as a major single-player superhero project. Its cancellation does not, however, prove that Warner Bros. has ended DC game development altogether. DC was explicitly named among the properties WBD still wanted to prioritize.
Player First Games and MultiVersus
Player First Games developed MultiVersus, Warner Bros.’ platform-fighting game featuring characters from across its entertainment catalog. WBD acquired the studio in 2024.

- Wonder Woman is featured in a brand new design from the mind of Todd McFarlane
- Comes with a sword, shield and a base

MultiVersus was reported to have reached 20 million players early in its run. That figure is a registered or reached-player measure, not proof of 20 million paying customers, sustained active users, revenue, or profitability. The game’s online service was scheduled to shut down after its fifth season, according to the cited coverage.
The game’s history illustrates why player counts need context. A large launch audience can coexist with difficult retention, monetization, support, and operating-cost challenges. The available reporting does not provide enough information to make a complete financial assessment of MultiVersus.
WB Games San Diego
WB Games San Diego was reportedly working on AAA free-to-play gaming. The available reports do not identify a specific canceled title or establish the complete number of employees affected, so more precise claims would go beyond the evidence.

Why did WBD make the cuts?
Warner Bros. Discovery said its games business had a disappointing 2024 and needed a different portfolio and team structure. The company’s stated goal was to improve profitability by concentrating investment on “fewer but bigger franchises.”
The timing also followed the weak performance of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Reuters and The Guardian described the game as falling short of expectations, with weak sales and poor reviews. Updates ended in January 2025. Earlier restructuring had included layoffs at WB Games Montréal and a pullback from further support for the title.

The Guardian’s report also noted that the broader games market was difficult, with consumers reducing discretionary spending and favoring established titles. That is industry context rather than a quantified finding that explains WBD’s decisions by itself.
It would therefore be too strong to say Suicide Squad alone caused the closures. The game’s performance was important context, but WBD described a broader response to the gaming business’s 2024 results and its future portfolio.
Management changes formed another part of the background. Reuters reported that David Haddad, the former head of WBD’s gaming unit, left the company in January 2025 after 12 years. The cited sources do not establish that his departure directly caused the studio closures.
Which franchises remain priorities?
WBD identified four core properties for its games strategy:
- Harry Potter, including Hogwarts Legacy.
- Mortal Kombat.
- DC.
- Game of Thrones.
This is a strategic direction, not a complete confirmed release slate. Naming a franchise as a priority does not confirm a particular game, studio, budget, platform, release date, or approval status. It does indicate where WBD believes recognizable intellectual property can provide a stronger commercial foundation.

- COMICS-INSPIRED SQUADRON SUPREME POWER PRINCESS: This collectible Squadron Supreme Power Princess action figure is inspired by the character's appearance in Marvel's Avengers comic books
- PREMIUM DESIGN AND DECO: Fans and collectors can display premium Marvel 6 inch action figures (15 cm) with comics-inspired design and deco in their collection
- MARVEL COMICS-INSPIRED ACCESSORIES: This officially licensed Hasbro Marvel Legends action figure comes with 4 accessories, including alternate hands, sword, and shield

- DISPLAY-WORTHY ARTICULATION: Collectible action figure features over 20 points of articulation with fully poseable head, arms, and legs for dynamic poses on your shelf
The trade-off is straightforward. Established brands may reduce the marketing and audience risk associated with entirely new properties, but concentrating on a small number of expensive franchises also makes the business more dependent on each major release. It narrows the creative portfolio at the same time that it narrows costs and risk.

No—not based on the evidence available for this restructuring. WBD reduced its development footprint, closed three studios, and canceled Wonder Woman. But that is different from shutting down Warner Bros. Games or exiting the games business.
In June 2025, WBD announced a plan to separate its operations into two companies. The proposed Streaming & Studios company was to include Warner Bros. Games alongside Warner Bros. Television, Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, DC Studios, HBO, and HBO Max. WBD said the separation was expected by mid-2026, subject to approvals and other conditions.
That announcement provides useful corporate context: games were being retained within the studio-focused entertainment business even as the number of development teams was reduced. It does not, by itself, confirm the final status of the proposed separation or any later changes to Warner Bros. Games.
WBD’s official separation announcement describes the planned structure. Claims about whether the separation ultimately completed, or about later project revivals, transfers, rehiring, asset sales, or licensing, require separate verification.

What this reset means
The February 2025 decision represents a retrenchment and portfolio refocus rather than a total gaming exit. WBD is moving away from a broader collection of teams and projects toward a smaller group built around globally recognizable properties.
The cuts affected markedly different approaches to game development: Monolith’s large single-player superhero project, Player First’s live-service platform fighter, and WB Games San Diego’s reported AAA free-to-play work. The closures show that WBD was narrowing its portfolio, but they do not prove that the company has rejected every live-service or free-to-play project in principle.
Several important details remain unknown from the cited reporting: the exact number of job losses, employee transfers or severance arrangements, the ultimate fate of Monolith’s technology, the disposition of canceled projects, and the development status of future games tied to the four priority franchises.
The clearest conclusion is therefore limited but meaningful: Warner Bros. Discovery is cutting costs and reducing project risk by relying more heavily on established intellectual property. That may create a more focused games business, but it also leaves the company more dependent on a small number of high-profile releases.
