What Warzone Memory Error 0-1766 means
When players report Memory Error 0-1766, Warzone has generally crashed to the Windows desktop or returned an Xbox player to the console dashboard. The code identifies the failure event; it does not establish that the computer lacks physical memory, that an Xbox component is defective, or that a network connection is responsible. Historical reports connect the label with both Windows PC and Xbox, but they do not demonstrate one root cause shared by every affected player.

Activision currently handles 0-1766 as part of the broader crash, freeze and loading-problem category rather than publishing a code-specific diagnosis. Its Known Issues page says it is a running list of issues identified or reported in Warzone that are under investigation or scheduled to be fixed. The page was updated August 7, 2026, and 0-1766 is not among the displayed tracked issues. An unlisted problem should be sent through Activision’s Warzone bug-report form; a PC crash should also be submitted through the Call of Duty PC Crash Report.
That status matters when choosing a fix. The sequence below starts with reversible maintenance actions that Activision currently recommends. It does not promise that one step will cure every installation, because the same code can follow different underlying failures.

Fix Memory Error 0-1766 on Windows PC
Perform the steps in order. Launch Warzone after each major change so you can tell which intervention altered the behavior. Record whether the crash occurs at startup, during shader loading, in the lobby or during a match; that information is useful if you need to file a crash report.
1. Update Windows and your graphics driver
Install all pending Windows updates, restart the computer, and then install the current graphics driver recommended by your GPU vendor. A driver update is a compatibility measure, not proof that the old driver caused 0-1766. Use the vendor’s normal installer and reboot when it requests one. Do not run several driver installers at once or interrupt an installation midway.
- Apply Windows updates before testing the game again.
- Install the currently recommended driver for your graphics-card vendor.
- Restart Windows, then launch Warzone without starting optional utilities first.
2. Let shader preloading finish
Warzone may compile shaders after an update or driver change. Leave the game at the main menu until shader preloading has completed before entering a playlist or closing the application. Interrupting this process can leave the game rebuilding data on the next launch and makes it harder to distinguish a normal first-run workload from a crash.

If the game displays shader-preloading progress, wait for it to reach completion. Keep the computer powered and avoid launching recording software, overlays or other demanding applications during this first pass.
3. Repair the installed game files
A damaged or incomplete file can cause a crash even when Windows and the driver are current. Use the repair tool for the launcher that owns your installation:
- Battle.net: open the Warzone entry, open its options menu, and choose Scan and Repair. Allow the scan to finish and let the launcher download any replacement files.
- Steam: open Warzone in your Library, open its Properties, go to the installed-files section, and choose Verify integrity of game files. Wait for verification and any required downloads to complete.
File verification is low risk, but it can take time and may redownload large files. Do not cancel the process because the percentage appears to pause. Test the game only after the launcher reports completion.

4. Isolate overlays and background applications
Activision warns that overlays, recording tools, input remappers and other background applications can conflict with Warzone. Close them temporarily before launching the game. Examples include in-game overlays, screen capture utilities, hardware monitoring displays, macro or controller-remapping software and chat overlays. If the crash disappears, re-enable applications one at a time to identify the conflict rather than leaving every utility disabled permanently.
When ordinary closing does not help, perform a clean boot of Windows using Microsoft’s current clean-boot procedure, then test Warzone with only essential services. A clean boot is a diagnostic step: it changes the startup environment so you can determine whether another program is involved. Restore normal startup after testing and before everyday use.
5. Check antivirus exclusions carefully
Security software can interfere with a game executable or prevent a repaired file from loading. Where appropriate, add the Warzone installation folder to the antivirus exception list, following the security product’s own instructions. Do not switch off antivirus or other protections indiscriminately. An exclusion reduces scanning in that folder, so use the narrowest exception available and remove it if it does not change the crash.

6. Submit a PC Crash Report if the error remains
If Windows, the driver, shader preloading, file verification and background-app isolation do not resolve 0-1766, submit Activision’s Call of Duty PC Crash Report. Include the requested system information and describe exactly when the crash occurs. Mention your launcher, Windows version, graphics-driver version, whether shader preloading completed, the repair result and any overlays you tested. This gives support actionable context instead of only the numeric code.
Fix Memory Error 0-1766 on Xbox
Xbox troubleshooting is shorter because the platform controls its driver and operating-system updates. Complete each step before moving to the next one.
- Update the Xbox system software. Install any pending console update, then restart the console before opening Warzone.
- Restart Warzone. Close the game completely and launch it again. If the error returns, perform a full console reboot rather than relying only on the game’s resume state.
- Keep the console cool and ventilated. Place it where air can circulate and make sure vents are not blocked. This is a sensible operating check, not evidence that overheating is the cause of every 0-1766 crash.
- Clear the Xbox cache. Use the current cache-clearing procedure for your Xbox model. Menu wording and the supported procedure can change with system software; Xbox Support is the appropriate reference if the console does not expose the expected option.
- Clear the alternate MAC address. Press the Xbox button, then go to Settings → Network → Network settings → Advanced settings → Alternate MAC Address → Clear. Confirm the restart when Xbox requests it.
- Escalate to Xbox Support. If the console and Warzone are fully updated and the crash continues, contact Xbox Support and provide the error code, the point at which the crash occurs and the troubleshooting steps already completed.
Clearing the alternate MAC address resets that saved network value and forces a restart; it is not a guarantee that the game error is network-related. Likewise, cache clearing addresses potentially corrupted temporary data, not a proven 0-1766-specific defect.

Historical suggestions that need qualification
A player-facing guide published May 28, 2021 described reports on Xbox and Windows and suggested closing background applications, updating Warzone, clearing cache or MAC settings, repairing files, reinstalling an Xbox add-on or the game, and hard-restarting the device. Another historical guide proposed connection checks, Xbox display-setting changes, PC file verification, clean boot and driver updates. Those suggestions can explain why older forum threads mention network cables, display modes or reinstallations, but they are not current Activision diagnoses for 0-1766.
If you try a historical measure, treat it as a last-resort experiment and change one thing at a time. Reinstalling is especially disruptive: it consumes storage, bandwidth and time, and the available evidence does not establish it as a guaranteed solution. Display-setting changes and connection checks likewise should not replace the current update, cache, file-verification and support sequence.
What will not be established by this error code
- It does not prove you need more RAM. No authoritative numeric memory requirement or success rate for 0-1766 has been published in the available guidance.
- It does not prove an SSD or new graphics card will fix the crash. Activision’s current remedies focus on software maintenance, not a required hardware purchase.
- It does not prove a cooling fan or network cable is the answer. Keep the Xbox ventilated and maintain a stable setup, but do not present accessories as guaranteed remedies.
- It does not provide a measurable frequency or crash rate. No authoritative statistic establishes how common 0-1766 is or how often any individual fix succeeds.
How to prepare a useful support report
Before contacting support, write down the platform and launcher, the exact time and trigger, whether the game reaches the menu, whether shader preloading completed, and the updates or repairs you performed. On PC, include Windows and graphics-driver versions and the result of Scan and Repair or file verification. On Xbox, note the console model, system-update status, cache-clearing result and whether clearing the alternate MAC address changed anything.

Keep the wording factual: “Warzone closes to the dashboard after entering a match” is more useful than “memory is broken.” The code 0-1766 is important, but the reproducible sequence around it is what lets support distinguish a launch failure from a menu, shader or in-match crash.
Bottom line
Start with the official, reversible steps for your platform: update, complete shader preloading and repair files on PC; update, fully restart, clear cache and clear the alternate MAC address on Xbox. Isolate conflicting PC software and use antivirus exclusions cautiously. Because Activision does not currently list 0-1766 as a separately tracked issue, persistent crashes should be escalated with a complete crash report rather than treated as proof that buying hardware will solve the problem.
